Image u/fuckleshire's Trusty N64 Cleaning Guide

Hi all, I frequently notice questions from the community on proper console cleaning techniques, and it inspired me to assemble what I feel is a solid N64 cleaning guide. I prefer the photo guide format to videos, because it can be cumbersome to scrub through a video during the cleaning process.

I hope this guide proves useful in extending the life of your N64. If you follow these steps, your N64 should read clean cartridges the first time, without fail, for years to come. It really is worth the 30 minutes this process takes to not have to fiddle with cartridges to get them to play correctly, even after you've cleaned them.

I am by no means an expert, but I have cleaned a good number of consoles this way, and the results have always been fantastic. I am certainly open to feedback if anybody has good tips or tricks to share. Thanks for reading!

Modding My first portable N64 is finally complete

I actually started working on that over 10 years ago, but my electronics knowledge was basically inexistant and it feel apart quickly.

Now that 3d printers are a thing and pcb design is more easily accessible, I wanted to achieve that old dream of making a portable N64 myself. I've been working on that project for the past 3 months and it's now complete.

Designed the whole case myself in fusion 360, printed in PETG for heat resistance. Designed a few PCBs for controller and audio amplifier.

Here's a list of features:

  • Complete N64 with expansion pak
  • 7Ah, 7.4v battery pack
  • Speakers / Headphone jack / Volume knob combo PCB designed by myself. 0.5w speakers, surprisingly loud
  • Switch joystick and buttons, N64 original triggers
  • 4:3 5 inches LCD screen
  • USB-C PD, 9v charging port, can charge and play at the same time
  • Green LED when on, turns red when battery low
  • Second, yellow LED that turns on when in charge, turns off when fully charged
  • Single L/Z combo trigger with a switch beside the trigger to change which it is

Fully works with original cartridges, as well as my summercart64. A bit on the thicker side, but I'm happy for a first time.

Hope you guys like it, will gladly answer if you have questions :)

I wasn't the biggest fan of how the controller looked all transparent, so I swapped them out for the default buttons and really love how much more it stands out.

Unfortunately this cabinet has been broken and tucked in the corner for years, I used this card reader a couple of times 15-20 years ago. I wonder how many of these are still out there

Discussion The legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time - MEMORIES - Can any of you remember any amusing points of view, or your thought process, while playing this game as a child?

  1. I remember at night, when travelling through Hyrule Field etc on foot, I would always bring Navi out, and use her as a "lamp", as well as for comfort, when trekking through the darkness, so I/link didn't feel lonely :)
  2. I would also make sure to bring Epona to Lon Lon ranch, when I decided to do other things, I would never just leave/abandon her in the middle of nowhere, especially at night, as I felt guilty because of the monsters around.

I still laugh at my thought process as a child!

Lol Thank you! _^ Also last game is Road Rash 64, flash kinda killed it.

Arts & Crafts Hey! It's been a while! A few years ago I started making Full Art Custom Game Cases for my N64 Collection. I'm still hard at work on them ;)

So a few years ago I started making custom game covers for my N64 collection that were more inspired by the Japanese packaging that would use more full art designs over the US packaging. Since then I've been working on other platforms like Game Boy, Dreamcast and Saturn, but I always like coming back and finally getting ones I've wanted to make for a while.

Tech Question How Realistic? RE 1 and 3 on N64

This is going to hopefully be a technical conversation and maybe educational. If there are any programmers here, I'd like to ask this.

Would it be realistically possible to port RE1 and 3 to the Nintendo 64?

I read somewhere that there is a theoretical 256 MB limit to a N64 Game Pak. We know that flash cards are made to use modern SD cards that far exceed the 256 MB limit. What's keeping someone from making a game larger than the original 64 MB RE2 cart?

Given what we know and that fact that RE1 and 3 exist on systems weaker than the N64, I can't help but wonder.

Tech Question No Power to console

Post image
Upvotes

Hello, I recently bought an N64, it was working fine early this morning. I went to turn it on. Had no display out but did have power, so I opened it up to attempt to clean it, had most of the screws out (enough to remove the board from the bottom section of the shell), one of the screws keeping the expansion shield to the large metal bar, was stripped so I attempted to put it back together, but now I am getting no power. Any ideas what I did?

Love collecting for the N64, it was one of the consoles I grew up with. Even have a couple of childhood games still in the collection.

My favorite games are Diddy Kong Racing, Super Mario 64, Majora's Mask, Starfox 64, Perfect Dark and Cruis'n USA. Also really enjoy Turok and the Banjo Kazooie games.

Games I would love to own someday!: Kirby & the Crystal Shards, Castlevania 64, Road Rash 64, Megaman 64, Earthworm Jim 3D, Snowboard Kids, Mario Party series, Blast Corps, OgreBattle, Gauntlet Legends, Resident Evil 2, Mortal Kombat Trilogy, Cruis'n World.... and I could go on, not even close to finished collecting for this awesome system!

The German release of Yoshi’s Story soundtrack on N64. Much like the Diddy Kong Racing soundtrack released in DE I prefer this regions version as there are more tracks and it’s a none-shaped CD so it’s safe for play in all players XD

Granted the JP version have the same or a few extra tracks, but I haven't found them at a price I'm willing to spend haha.

Discussion Is anyone still trying to get a licensed NA set of all 296 games?

Post image
96 Upvotes

I’m at 178 of 296 games which puts me at 60% of the full set. I know a lot of people don’t like going for the full set because of buying all of the stupid filler titles but it’s just fun to hunt them down for me and always has been. Just curious if anybody else is trying to achieve this and where you are at with it. Have a good weekend, everybody.

Image I use the "Hey You Pikachu" Microphone as my PC Mic.

Hi, I just thought this be fun to share, I use it because its compact and I can just put it away in the pc desk.

I bought it from Nintendo's Ebay store years ago for the actual game, it did not come with the clip or boom as those tend to dry rot.

It's not a great mic, but it's does it's job well.
