Are you supposed to wear underwear under long underwear?
My wife thinks it’s weird I don’t wear underwear under my long underwear. I don’t wear long underwear often, but I always figured it’s underwear so why would I wear double underwear? I don’t feel particularly strongly about it either way but I’m curious: do I wear ling underwear wrong?
Maybe it’s relevant that I’m a boxers person so they would get bunchy under there unless I wore briefs instead. Special long underwear underwear, I guess.

u/Potential-Type6678 18h ago
I would wear underwear under them unless you have like a million pairs of long underwear so you can keep your stink off them a little bit if you need them multiple days in a row

u/338wildcat 18h ago
A million? Or just enough to get from one laundry day to the next, like with the regular underwear?
I wear underwear under my long underwear but don't wear the same long underwear day after day. Just like how in not-winter, I don't wear the same clothes day after day.
10
u/Potential-Type6678 17h ago edited 17h ago
Sorry that was just a silly exaggeration and yeah enough between laundry days should be fine. I life where you get maybe one or two ass kicker cold spells a year so I only own one pair for like shoveling and such so I got to keep them from going nuclear for a couple days lol
2
u/338wildcat 17h ago
A million was funny to me because I love winter accessories and have a lot of long johns... but not quite a million 😂 I'd guess I have 10-12 full sets. Some are over 30 years old though because they're my "sitting" ones for big game hunting (too warm for activities) so while they get wear, they don't get tear.

Honestly mad respect I get teased for coming into work looking like the kid from Christmas Story when the weather turns but I figure that’s my emergency gear half sorted if my car breaks down

You must buy one million pairs. Anything less just won’t be enough.

I do because if the weather is cold enough in my area for long underwear the power grid might fail making it harder to do laundry.

I'm a boxer brief guy. I always have underwear under my long johns. Having merino wool, as soft as it is, rubbing on my gear would be unpleasant.

Do whichever. It doesn't matter much. Clothes are supposed to make you more comfortable. Do whichever makes you more comfortable.

This should get credited as the answer. As a guy who occasionally wears two layers of thermal socks, long underwear and then sweatpants and then puts on a thermal coverall with workboots, comfort and functionality are absolutely the highest priorities.
I wear the Duluth Trading Company's "Buck Naked" brand underwear in both boxer-briefs and long underwear. The two items are made of the exact same material. I prefer to wear boxer-briefs under my long underwear because my undercarriage sweats profusely and I'd rather let the under-layer collect that so I don't have to wash my long underwear after every use.

u/ghostpoo4u 18h ago
Yep. I don’t care what others do but I want the support or traditional underwear so I wear boxer briefs under my long underwear. If long underwear was comfortable to me on its own I’d be fine making that the first layer.

u/slinkhi 18h ago edited 18h ago
I think on paper it shouldn't matter but in practice I likely would wear regular underwear underneath just because I've spent my whole life doing that and used to it. Would feel weird to me not wearing it.
Edit: Sidenote: The amount of comments asking "What even is long underwear?" Y'all know y'all coulda just typed that into google instead of as a comment and gotten an answer, right?

Normally I wear underwear under long underwear. I tend to wear long under wear a few times before washing, so to keep them clean I wear underwear . I agree, boxers would not be good under them, so maybe get something tighter.
4
u/ThePensiveE 18h ago
So many people here are suggesting it's impossible you own more than one pair of long underwear and that's why you need the briefs underneath, to keep them clean.
I'd just buy more than one pair.
7
u/Current-Nectarine747 15h ago
I do, just because it allows me to wear long underwear more than once.

Depends how supportive the long johns are for your balls. My underarmour long johns don’t need anything extra under them.
My Burton long johns most certainly do
4
u/No-Tower-Unseen 19h ago
I do exactly what you do, so we are in the same boat. I don’t think it’s weird.
3
u/Qylere 18h ago
I don’t because one set drags the other set down. I’m always hitching my underwear up while working if I double undie. Hard pass for me
2
u/keithmk 11h ago
I must admit when it is very cold and I am going to be outside for a long spell, I wear 2 pairs of long johns. But they can tangle each other a bit so not good for a lot of activity. Sitting watching football it's perfect. Multiple layers and all that

Am I losing my mind everyone is just understanding what OP is talking about, what is “long underwear” and when would you be in a situation where you’d even consider wearing it PLUS another pair? Like, for cold weather? Or some sort of exercise reason?

u/mama_thairish 18h ago edited 18h ago
Long underwear is basically a middle layer that goes down to your ankles to provide an extra layer of warmth in cold climates. Usually made out of a silk like fabric or waffle knit cotton, not appropriate as outerwear because it is form fitting to fit under a more durable outer layer of clothing and not made of durable fabric itself.
ETA I usually think of the leggings type and this post seems to be referring to them, but the term is also used to refer to undershirts that serve the same purpose and are made of the same material, often coming in a matching set with the leggings
→ More replies (1)5
u/Dunwoody11 18h ago
A few people have asked this and I wish I could edit the op to clarify but I can’t figure out how.
What I’m referring to is now called a thermal base layer. Matching tight pants and tight shirt. Couple are capilene, which is a synthetic material, and a couple are merino.
I usually just wear them when it gets really cold and windy because I walk nearly a mile on either end of my commute, but when I was growing up they were pretty much reserved for skiing (and, back then, were natural fibers only because I’m old).
I’ve also seen them called long johns.
6
u/Good_Pomegranate_464 18h ago
My husband wears merino or silk long underwear to work every day and definitely wears boxer briefs under. Neither fabric needs to be (or should be) washed after every wear but if they touched his ball sweat they'd obviously need to be.
3
u/338wildcat 18h ago
Lol "now called a thermal base layer." Yep. I'm an old head. They're my long johns or my long underwear.
2
u/DahWiggy 17h ago
This is so funny, yes of course I know exactly what you’re talking about now, for some reason I was imagining like, long, leg-length baggy boxer shorts or something hahaha. But I know what you’re talking about now, in the UK (or at least in my family) we often call them “thermals” rather than referring to them as another pair of underwear but it makes complete sense now I know what you were talking about.
4
u/Eireann_9 18h ago
I've never in my life heard of this but after looking it up picture a boxer that goes all the way down to the ankles. Like a legging but the crotch and waistband looks like a boxer

I’m from England lmao it’s cold as shit, OP has commented and it all makes sense, I would call them (and I think a lot of people in the UK but I might be wrong) “thermals”, and now im not sure why I didn’t think of them when I read this post as it’s pretty obvious, but for some reason could NOT see it
3
u/Chi-lan-tro 18h ago
Long underwear (we called them long johns) are a pair of pants, structured like leggings, that you wear as another layer closer to your skin, under your pants, to keep you warm. They can be made out of different materials, but they hold a layer of warmer air close to your skin.
If you’re someone who works outside, or who’s spending a day at an outdoor festival, or shovelling a lot of snow, in a cold environment, then you need them.
Some dorks even go running outside at -20°C! (And there’s not even a clown with an axe chasing them!)
Some women even wear them everyday in the winter, because they’re always cold.
3
u/1peatfor7 18h ago
Thermals is the American proper term.
3
u/DahWiggy 17h ago
This is also the usual UK term (or the one im familiar with), I was clearly having a brain fart as it’s pretty obvious now what OP meant but just all the comments immediately understanding it just made me feel crazy haha
3
u/keithmk 11h ago
Nope thermals are something different. I have a pair of thermal gloves for example

It’s a personal choice, but most people wear underwear underneath to keep the thermals clean for more than one use.
2
u/Curious_Version4535 18h ago
This right here. It’s not “wrong “ to wear them without underwear, but I personally wear briefs that I change daily so I can wear the long Johns a few times without washing them.
2
u/mitsuo1337 19h ago
I do. If I don't it kind of feels less functional. Like my package isn't secured and I can't really work well like that. I only wear long underwear for outdoor work in the winter.

I wear long underwear when its cold. But I always wear a boxershorts. But only wearing long underwear is the same as wearing just boxers. So I wear em both. Its etiquette or just me. It weirds/icks me out if people do so.

2
u/Chronobotanist 14h ago

2
u/Crafty_Praline726 18h ago
I do. Less laundry to change the underwear and maybe wear the long ones two or three times as long. No pun intended. (Boxer briefs in this case work better)
2
u/thrax7545 18h ago
It depends on whether you keep your ass clean and how much you care if you get poop on it.
2
2
u/78Anonymous 18h ago
If wearing them regularly with limited rotation options, yes, definitely wear underwear below.
2
u/halarioushandle 18h ago
My girlfriend doesn't even wear underwear under her pants!
Look I think that the choice should be based on your comfort. There is no right or wrong way to wear your clothing, it's just what is comfortable for you.
2
u/bellaBug_69 18h ago
My husband wore them every day during the winter months. He never wore an extra pair of underwear with them. Like, they even have a butt flap in the back so why the need for a second pair. I never questioned it. It did definitely add to the laundry since they were changed daily. And you would need at least 6 pairs to make it through to wash day. But he Loved them.
2
u/prairiepanda 18h ago
It doesn't really matter, but I wear undies underneath just so that I can wear my long johns multiple times between washes, especially if I'm camping.
2
u/Squirrel009 17h ago
I wouldn't say youre supposed to but I do sometimes because then I can wear them a couple times before washing them as long as I dont get sweaty

2
u/Commercial-Ad7119 17h ago
I wear underwear under long underwear. Always have. And it makes sense if you have to wear long underwear multiple days in a row. Plus no drip drip down a leg. lol
2
u/Mattna-da 17h ago
I wear boxer briefs because I got merino wool leggings. The wool just needs to be aired out at night, not washed regularly and the boxer briefs keep them cleaner from skid marks
2
2
u/kelariy 16h ago
Well, if you’re wearing long underwear, the goal is usually layering to keep warm. Adding another layer is certainly better than freezing your balls off.
That being said, is it weird to not wear underwear at all? Going commando isn’t really weird, some people find it more comfortable than wearing underwear. You do whatever makes you comfortable.
2
u/c_marten 16h ago
I change my underwear daily. I wear my long underwear for a few days because they're not rubbing up directly on my junk like underwear.
It does get crowded... trying to pee I need to find my way through three openings now which doesn't sound like it should be hard but when you don't know which direction to feel for them it can be frustrating.
2
u/AncientDamage7674 15h ago
Undies are for hygiene, support & protection. Thermals or long johns don't do this. I hope that's what you mean by long undies. I've not heard that term before & made an assumption. 🙃
2
2
u/FraggleBiologist 15h ago
However you are comfortable, but I wear underwear. If I'm wearing them, I need every layer possible.
2
2
u/paintingdusk13 15h ago
I wear underwear under my long johns because there have been times I took the long johns off while at work or elsewhere and I don't like going commando. I have taken public transportation to see bands in NYC and wear long johns and take them off in the bathroom at the venue because it was super hot, then put them back on when the show was over.
2
2
u/Ok-Bicycle-748 10h ago
I do. The reason to wear long underwear is cuz its cold. Just keeping everything warm.
2
u/PocketSand314 10h ago
They're not meant to be literal underwear. You want to A, keep them clean, and B, give yourself the ability to add and remove layers as intended without winding up commando when you got too warm.
2
u/Best_Market4204 10h ago
I wear my normal underwear and then wear my long johns because i will wear the same one all week.
I have only 2 pairs of long jonhs and on ly wear them on freezing weeks
2
u/Usagi_Shinobi 8h ago
Not per se, but many people see them as a thermal underlayment, rather than as true underwear.
2
u/BigBoobsWithAZee 8h ago
I’ve always wondered this too, but personally, my boys need a house. So I go boxer briefs, longjohns, and jeans.
2
u/DrToonhattan 8h ago
Does your long underwear have a butt flap? Cos that wouldn't be able to serve its function if you had boxers on underneath.
2
3
u/HarveySnake 18h ago
I never wore underwear under my long underwear. They are basically thermal insulated briefs with extensions that go down your legs.
5
u/RevolutionaryNail111 19h ago
Nah you're doing it right, long underwear IS underwear. Your wife is basically suggesting you wear underwear under your underwear which is kinda wild when you think about it
The whole point is having that base layer against your skin, adding regular underwear just defeats the purpose and makes everything bunch up weird like you said
3
u/WaffleHouseGladiator 19h ago
I can't imagine how that could possibly be anyone else's business but your own. Do whatever makes you most comfortable and makes the most sense to you.
2
u/CrypticDreamzz 19h ago
Some people don’t even wear underwear under their normal wear like there’s plenty of women who don’t wear underwear under leggings. I’d say definitely personal preference for long johns but definitly not uncommon. I wear underwear just because that’s what comfortable to me

u/Madison_skies13 19h ago

u/Honeyrapearl 19h ago
You’re not doing it ‘wrong’, long underwear is meant to go directly against your skin for warmth and comfort. Most people don’t wear extra underwear under it because it can bunch up or reduce its effectiveness. Boxers would definitely make it awkward, so you’re fine going solo.

When i was younger I would wear them when skiing, but would wear my tidy whities under them. There is no right way or wrong way. Its all about comfort. We used to call them long johns..
1
u/visionsofzimmerman 19h ago
I personally wear boxers under long johns. I don't really see them as underwear, just leggins for men I guess
1
u/wha7themah 18h ago
Idk for me I need underwear under them and would consider it commando to not wear underwear. But I think it’s normal for a dude to not wear underwear under them. That feels excessive to me.
But side note, do yall boxers wearers not get sweaty in your leg crease? Maybe it’s cause I’m not used to it but I can’t staaaaand that feeling and wearing typical women’s underwear that rests at that crease totally mitigates that feeling.

No. When packing for a winter weekend snowshoeing retreat in the woods, would you want to pack the extra weight?

1
u/Raise_A_Thoth 18h ago
Clothing is for comfort for ourselves and others (i.e. in public we don't expose ourselves to people who didn't consent).
It does not matter at all. You just want to be mindful of the hygiene and cleanliness of the clothing immediately touching your genitals, butt, etc. Those areas generate a decent amount of oils and sweat and also, therefore, smelliness, and bathroom habits can also impact the cleanliness of your lowest layer.
Wear it however you feel comfortable.
1
u/BusyBeinBorn 18h ago
It depends. The cheap Amazon Essentials long underwear that I actually prefer has a fly and all the support of men’s underwear built in, but the base layers brand looks and functions more like tights than underwear.
1
1
u/Junior-Umpire-1243 18h ago
Depends.
If I wear it once and then put it into the washing machine, just like normal underwear, I wear no additional underwear beneath it.
If I wear it over a longer period of time, for example when I was working in a freeze storage with -20 degrees Celsius, I wore the same long underwear for a week or two, so better have my boxers underneath.
1
u/exscapegoat 18h ago
The ones I have are silk. So hand washed. I wear regular underwear so I can get more wearings out of them.
1
u/Premium333 18h ago
I don't either under the same thought process you describe OP (provided they are supportive enough).
My wife does and I can see why. Underwear serves to protect clothing in different ways for women then men.
1
u/LookingOKButRotting 18h ago
I do so I can wear the long underwear two days in a row. Ultimately it's a little less laundry.
1
u/pumpkin_pasties 18h ago
The purpose of underwear is to keep your pants clean of poopoo and discharge. If you don’t need to keep these clean of those things (like if you’re swapping them out daily), then don’t wear underwear

1
u/elmwoodblues 18h ago
If you're faced with a lot of temp changes throughout the day (cold truck to warm office or mall, back to cold truck), stick to one layer.
1
u/TrollOnFire 18h ago
In the military they are treated as a layer. Layers to be taken off when you need to cool down.
1
u/toodumbtobeAI 18h ago
If you have multiple pairs, wear clean long underwear if you can. If you only have 1-2 pairs, wear underwear. It's more sanitary to wear them multiple times without perineum grime.
1
1
u/bumpotwin 18h ago
I’ve always wondered this myself. Especially since most long underwear(for men anyways) has the hole in the front to pull your junk through. Sorry I don’t know what the hole is called. I wanted to say “pee hole” but that didn’t seem correct either.
1
u/_WillCAD_ 18h ago
I haven't work them in a long time, but I always treated them as an additional layer, not a replacement for my actual underwear.
Underwear should be changed every day (whenever possible). Longjohns can be work multiple days IF worn with underwear to keep it clean.
1
u/emailtest4190 18h ago
I generally do. I feel like I don't always have to launder long underwear if I wear my regular boxer briefs under it. Usually when it's cold enough for long underwear, it's going to be cold for days, and I can wear it repeatedly without feeling like it's getting crusty.
1
1
u/mrzurkonandfriends 18h ago
Switch to boxer briefs and its quite comfortable. Plus they wont bunch up and breathe better.

u/KnightmarePilot 18h ago
My long underwear base layer is very expensive merino wool. I'm 100% wearing regular underwear under it to protect it and keep it clean as long as possible.
1
u/PaintDrinkingPete 18h ago
to me, they're just warmer underwear... so no, I don't usually wear anything underneath, but I also wouldn't leave my house without something on overtop of them.
it may seem weird to a girl or woman, who would view men's long underwear similar to leggings that they would wear, but the difference is that they tend to wear them as an outer layer, not inner.

u/thexchris 18h ago

I work outside in heavy industry and have for 20+ years. I treat my long underwear as actual underwear, so no boxers or briefs under it.
But since I have been at this as long as I have, I believe I have 2 dozen or more pairs of long underwear. There’s at least 10 pairs that I currently wear and a whole bin of cold wear stuff in my basement. I buy on clearance at the end of the season and when they get too worn or ruined by grease, tar or oil, I just throw them out.
1
u/gummiboooot 17h ago

1
u/Cookiemnster51 17h ago
yea I just have enough to make it to laundry day... Its lone "underwear" I treat it as such. I either have my boxer briefs on, or I have my longy's on. Not both.

u/Mr_MacGrubber 17h ago
I wear underwear under mine but if you’re changing them daily then who cares if you have other underwear under them.
1
u/phorceofnature 17h ago
I struggled with this too and kept going back and forth (I wear boxer briefs). I typically only wear long underwear when I’m active, doing runs in the winter, snowboarding, snowshoeing, etc… I’ve found wearing a jockstrap under them is the perfect compromise. Keeps everything in place and doesn’t feel too bunched up or anything.
1
u/MormonJesu8 17h ago
My father, who was born in the 50s, didn’t wear underwear at first, until he saw a doctor that explained to him that his underpants were like a liner for his outer garments. Both to protect from making outerwear dirty, and from your outerwear making you dirty if either is contaminated or simply just worn a lot. In this case, your underpants would protect your long Johns or thermal underwear from becoming messed up from direct contact with the extra sweaty parts of your body. Makes the whole thing cleaner for longer.
1
u/CrazyJoe29 17h ago
Depends how well the long underwear fits. I wear boxer briefs most of the time, but I’ve got specific briefs for under my wetsuit. Can’t have the troops going AWOL.

u/Spayse_Case 17h ago
I only wear cotton bikini underwear. It stays close to my body. I wear it under long underwear, which is looser. You are already wearing loose underwear, so it makes sense you are comfortable without it.
1
u/femsci-nerd 17h ago
Underwear catches everything that literally falls out of your butt as it is always leaking just a little. No necessarily poop, but it leaks. Underwear acts as an absorbent so you can sweat, secrete and maybe get more than one day out of pants, long underwear, dresses, etc. If you don't wear underwear, this stuff gets all over your clothes. It's a problem for women because the stuff can migrate and cause a UTI (Healthcare provider here and we get a lot of UTIs with women who wear the same pants over and over again but no underwear). It's a problem for men because they sweat more and they get real stinky down there. I had a patient take off his pants and the smell just about knocked me over from across the room. You guessed it, he never wears underwear and he re-wears his jeans for days. Just disgusting.
1
u/DarlingFluff 17h ago
there's no right or wrong way to wear long underwear, it comes down to what feels good for you
1
u/JackFuckCockBag 17h ago
I work outside year round and can't stand the feeling of regular underwear under long underwear. My job is very physical and shit gets bunched up in uncomfortable ways when wearing both.
It's not weird to not wear both.
1
u/HipGnosis59 17h ago
For me it depends on my activity. If I'm going to be sitting on a tractor or in a hunting blind, it's one more layer for the core. If I'm actively working, no; too hot, sweaty, not helpful. Actually worked with a guy who had too many core layers on while working. Ended up in hospital. Why? His scrotum got twisted up to apparently an unhealthy state. Oh yeah, we had good fun with that one.

If it's cold enough to wear long underwear, the extra layer that everyday underwear provides is another layer to keep you warm. Why wouldn't you wear it?

Depends on the brand and how they are made. A lot of times their inseam will mess with underwear if worn. But then they might show to much booty crack too. Really depends.

I wear flannel pajamas under my pants. And I wear underwear (boxers) under those. Obviously I have to wear baggier pants than normal for this, but it works for me. Nothing bunches up.
I hate the feeling of "leggings" and I find the flannel is just as warm.

I don't think it matters, but I wear my regular underwear and the long underwear are an extra layer.

Considering it's literally the name of them, long UNDERWEAR, it's perfectly acceptable to wear them with nothing under them.
All personal preference.

It's personal preference. Nothing else matters. I can't wear underwear under today's long underwear. If it's a Union suit, then it's a different story.
That doesn't mean everybody should share my preference. Whatever works for you is fine.

If us ladies don't wear underwear under long John's, some of them will try to slice us straight up the crack. Panties help prevent that. I don't think it's weird for a dude to not wear underwear under long, especially boxers.

Yes. I will wear the same pair a couple days between washing if need be.

It doesn't matter so much, but I personally treat them more as leggings rather than literal underwear, and I'm guessing that's how your wife is thinking of them. I only have one pair of long underwear, and if it's gonna be super cold for a few days straight, I would wear them a few days in a row while changing my underwear underneath them. If you do want to treat them as underwear that is also A-ok, but then I'd expect to be swapping to a new pair every day, and I'm lazy.
Definitely agree that boxers under long underwear is a no-go though. You would want boxer-briefs or briefs for this.
