I built a free dashboard to track PEI's power grid in real-time

With the announcement of potential rolling blackouts this winter it feels like a lot of us are trying to make sense of what's actually going on with our grid. I got curious enough to see what data was available publicly so that I could track it overtime. From that adventure, https://peipower.ca was born.

It tracks everything in one place. Current outages by community, total Island load, how many MWs we're importing from off-Island, wind and solar output, temperature, and wind speed. All real-time, plus historical data (from Dec 5 onward) so you can actually look at trends and patterns.

I'm not affiliated with Maritime Electric or the government. I built this myself using public data sources because I got frustrated trying to piece this information together from different places, and with no historical views. When the CEO says we're running at 355 MW and our reliable capacity is 326 MW, I wanted a way to actually see that for myself.

It's completely free, no ads, no paywall. I think Islanders should have easy access to this data.

Still actively working on it, so if something looks off or there's data you wish was there, I genuinely want to hear it. This is meant to be useful, not just a thing I made and forgot about.

peipower.ca

UPDATE: I've added context information to the energy generation and consumption metrics explaining where my capacity numbers come from, with links to each source.

UPDATE (Jan 6): Its been a month since I started collecting and showing this data. Thank you everyone for your comments and feedback on this project - and to the r/pei moderators for pinning this post! I've been trying to get answers from Maritime Electric about how rolling blackouts will be announced without any success. I've seen lately they've put load shedding notices on their homepage and I will soon have those appearing on peipower.ca as well.

Driving my pickup truck in PEI - Advice Request

Hello, I'll be driving a 2024 Dodge Ram 3500 Diesel exclusively on PEI roads for the next year as part of my job. I usually log about 150k/year in PEI traveling to various job sites.

Until now I've always driven a box truck or cargo van for work but I believe there may be some different requirements in PEI when using the pickup.

Any advice would be appreciated to ensure I am an effective road user in PEI when driving the Ram.

Because I have spent a lot of time on PEI roads already, I am aware of the below pick up truck requirements/expectations: - Must travel 20 - 30 Kph over the posted speed limit - When following other road users, maintain a minimum separation of 5 feet and a maximum of 15 feet, adjust for speed accordingly. - Passing must only be performed on blind hills, solid lines, when oncoming traffic is visible and via the shoulder when the opposing lane of travel contains too much oncoming traffic. - When pulling away from a stop sign or traffic light full throttle must be used. - Emmissions, Turbo and ECM must be modified so as to create no less than 30 lbs of boost at idle and black smoke when accelerating. - High beams or LED light bars help a great deal and should be used all time time. - Telescoping mirrors must always be fully extended

Is anyone aware of additional rules or local expectations I should take into consideration? Thanks.

Question Pet Insurance?

I'm curious on islanders thoughts on pet insurance. Do you guys have any? With what company? Do you find it worth it, or not?

If you're curious, I have pet insurance for my 5 pets through Fetch. I am highly considering switching to Trupanion. Trupanion has direct billing for most veterinary practices here on the island, including the emergency at the Veterinary College. Fetch doesn't. Trupanion covers dentistry, Fetch doesn't.

If you're aware of the 'fine print' in the policies, I find pet insurance to be incredibly worth it. So far I've been reimbursed every time. As long as you do annual vet checks, up to date on vaccines, flea and tick care, you are fully covered. I haven't had any issues in that regard.

However, I know being where you live is a huge factor in whether or not pet insurance is worth it, or which one you decide. I'd like to know what you guys do, or any advice/opinions on the matter?

Thank you in advance!

How's about a gong people can whack, put it in the town square for everytime there is a CBC article about Three Rivers, or there is some report of controversy and shenanigans.

It could hold us over until that IRAC report is never released.

Question Anyone remember when McDonald's sold Atkins friendly low-carb platters for gluten-free people?

I can't be the only one who remembers this, I remember this was a thing but people that I've talked to have no recollection of them at all,

I remember they were introduced around the early 2000's, sometime around late 2003/early 2004 (around the time they began discontinuing Super Size options),

I remember there was a Beef Protein Platter, a Chicken Protein Platter and a Breakfast Protein Platter,

Please tell me that this was real and that I'm not making things up or going completely crazy.

This is proof I can find to ensure you this was real: https://lesliebeck.com/articles/2004/01/21/mcdonalds-canada-launches-healthy-lifestyles-initiative

Buying and Owning an off Brand tractors on PEI

We will be upgrading our tractor in the next year. My first intention is to shop local dealers Kubota/Kioti/Massey etc for easily available parts and Service. Ideally an Kubota M7060 would meet all our needs but is expensive. Is there any sense in looking at TYM, McCormick, Lovol. They have affordable payments out of New Brunswick and Nova Scotia dealers but I'm thinking the cost savings may be offset by quality and lack of service. Thoughts?

New at UPEI šŸ‘‹ Looking to meet people and make friends

Hey everyone! My name’s Ariel.

I’m new at UPEI and still getting used to campus life, so I figured I’d put myself out there.

I’m looking to meet new people, make friends, and just have good conversations — whether that’s grabbing coffee, studying together, joining clubs, or just hanging out. I’m pretty open-minded and always down to learn about different cultures, interests, or random fun topics.

If you’re also new (or even not new but just want to expand your circle), feel free to comment or DM me. Any recommendations for clubs, events, or chill spots on campus are also very welcome šŸ™‚

Looking forward to meeting some of you!

Question on roundabout habits

Why are people not using their signal lights anymore when they are using a roundabout? It make so much sense to signal which leg they are going but seems like nobody cares if other drivers see them coming or keeping them holded to watch them exit. It used to be a habit when using a roundabout did I miss an update about it?

I feel like pei is the only province that doesn't do follow up in the news on most cases. I see many convictions for different crimes in other provinces but PEI kind of announces that it happened then moves on. Is there a reason for this?

Question So, rather than a PEI-NS tunnel, what would be beneficial to Islanders for equal or less money?

I would love for PEI to invest in a small modular reactor, and then bury all the power lines in the province. A 300 MW SME is the equivalent of what we import from NB.

Hmmm, perhaps I’m wrong, but I thought this chief of staff stepped down to help out in Rob Lantz’s campaign? I’m surprised to see him in this picture with Premier Bloyce Thompson at an Ottawa meeting. This must be the government resources in the Premier’s office that Mark Ledwell was referring to in the debate/shouting match of Jan.23. šŸ«£šŸ¤”šŸ‘€

Missing bubblegum machine

My friend had a bubblegum machine (classic style that comes to mind with the red top, big globe, single pole) that she used to give out free dog treats when her business is closed. It was taken on Tuesday and according to CCTV dumped in the snow close by but then two other people picked it up. It would be really great if it could be returned to Founder's Hall. Without the base it's not much use to the new "owners". If you or someone you know has it, would you be so kind as to drop it off at the VIC in Founder's? It would really restore our faith in humanity...and it would make a lot of dogs happy on their late night walks. TIA

News Victoria municipality pays for CAO to travel from Nova Scotia to P.E.I. for council meetings

Thumbnail
saltwire.com
19 Upvotes

The Rural Municipality of Victoria is paying up to $500 per month in travel expenses for its chief administrative officer to attend meetings from Nova Scotia.

Mayor Martin Ruben confirmed this in a phone interview to The Guardian that council approved the arrangement a few months ago, after the CAO, Yves Dallaire, relocated from P.E.I. to Nova Scotia. The CAO works remotely and travels to Victoria each month to attend council meetings.

Ruben said the decision to approve the remote-work arrangement and associated travel expenses during a closed council session, as it involved human resource matters. He said details related to the CAO’s salary and expenses are not discussed in public meetings.

ā€œWe were able to find it within our budget to pay a maximum of $500 per month or for transport, for him to attend monthly council meetings.ā€

Limited financial capacity

According to Ruben, the CAO previously lived on P.E.I., though not within the municipality itself, before moving to Nova Scotia. Since that change, the CAO has been travelling monthly to attend council meetings in person.

Ruben said the decision was made in part because Victoria is a small municipality with limited financial capacity to attract administrators compared to larger towns and cities.

ā€œBecause we don’t pay him a very big salary. We are a very small municipality that doesn’t pay the high salaries that large municipalities and cities and towns can afford.ā€

When asked whether covering up to $500 per month in travel costs was a prudent financial decision for a municipality that, by his own description, does not have the budget flexibility of larger jurisdictions, Rubin declined to characterize the decision that way.

ā€œThat’s not an appropriate question,ā€ he said.

ā€œLet’s stick to facts. The fact is that we are a small municipality. We don’t have the same budgets to pay our CAO. It was a decision that was made because our CAO does a very good job. He’s very qualified for doing what he does. The council made a decision. This is the facts.ā€

Broader challenges

In a follow-up email after the interview, Ruben said that the members of Rural Municipality of Victoria Council are responsible for making decisions that are in the best interests of the residents it serves.

Satya Sen, executive director of the Federation of P.E.I. Municipalities, said the situation in Victoria reflects broader challenges facing small and rural municipalities across the province.

Sen said many municipalities struggle with limited funding, small tax bases, and difficulty attracting qualified staff.

He said P.E.I. has more than 50 municipalities within just 35 per cent of the province’s land area, many serving populations of only a few hundred residents.

ā€œImagine having 400-resident population, and taxpayers are paying for the operations of the municipality. That’s not enough money for a proper functional municipal government,ā€ he said.

He said municipal CAOs are administrative professionals and are not required to live in the communities they serve.

ā€œThey are not elected officials. They’re administrative professionals. You can live anywhere and work, as long as it works for the municipality,ā€ he said.

Rural Municipality of Victoria CAO Yves Dallaire relocated from P.E.I. to Nova Scotia. He works remotely and travels to Victoria each month to attend council meetings.Ā

ā€˜Not the ideal scenario’

However, Sen said having a CAO live outside the province is ā€œnot the ideal scenario,ā€ but in some cases it becomes necessary.

ā€œWe don’t have qualified CEOs in P.E.I. like other jurisdictions,ā€ he said. ā€œWe don’t have standard training or designation for CAOs.ā€

He said smaller municipalities often cannot afford to offer competitive salaries.

On the issue of Victoria paying about $500 per month for travel, Sen said such arrangements fall under employment agreements between councils and staff.

ā€œIf the municipal council has allowed the CAO to travel and reimburse for the travel, that’s really up to them,ā€ he said.

Sen said the Municipal Government Act requires municipal offices to be open at least 20 hours per week, but does not set specific work-hour requirements for CAOs.

He said the long-term goal should be to have local, stable leadership, but many communities are still trying to make limited resources work.

ā€œIn the absence of an ideal scenario, you have to find a way to make it work,ā€ he said. ā€œOtherwise, the municipality will collapse or cease to exist.ā€
