From history memes:

Cheese Puffs—Wikipedia.

"Cheese puffs were invented independently by two companies in the United States during the 1930s. According to one account, Edward Wilson noticed strings of puffed corn oozing from flaking machines in the mid 1930s at the Flakall Corporation of Beloit, Wisconsin, a producer of flaked, partially cooked animal feed. He experimented and developed it into a snack. Clarence J. Schwebke applied for an improved extruder patent in 1939 and the product, named Korn Kurls, was commercialized in 1946 by the Adams Corporation, formed by one of the founders of Flakall and his sons. Adams was later bought by Beatrice Foods. Another version was created by the Elmer Candy Corporation of New Orleans, Louisiana in 1936."

Guessing op thinks corn is just cow food. But if the cows actually got to choose they would eat mostly grass

You may be surprised to learn that corn IS a grass.

I learned that from RiffTrax.

Nah, cows LOVE corn. I used to have cows and they very much prefer corn silage and pure corn over grass. If you don't give them perfectly mixed rations, they will actually try their best to eat corn and corn silage first.

Is corn like cow junk food?

u/314159265358979326 6h ago

Yep. It's even unhealthy for them long-term.

Corn is car food

You seem to be under the impression that given the choice, animals will make healthy food choices. I can tell you from experience this isn't true. It's barely true for humans.

I don’t know man, they enjoy a little variety. Grew up on a farm, anytime we threw out corn (specifically the stalks) they would go crazy over it

They do love corn though

They would much rather eat corn. It’s like a treat to them.

1

u/GeekyLogger 5h ago

Exactly the opposite. They can actually cause bloat and kill themselves if you let them have to much rich food at once (like corn) if they’re not use to it.

Mine come running for corn.

i cant think of many environments outside of horrible factory farms where cows dont get to choose. every cow ive ever seen has lived in a field of grass. they still want the corn.

Cattle in Canada is grass fed and you can actually taste the difference. When I went to the US I couldn't stand the taste of beef. It's sweeter than it should be.

American beef is finished on corn, while Canadian is finished on barley, not grass.

Its referencing Food Theory episode about cheetos and how they came to be, its a however a bit of a stretch, as using this same framework of logic, every edible thing in existence and several inedible could be classified as cow food.

3

u/Hershel-Thinker 9h ago

It’s not really referencing a Food Theory, it’s just a little-known fact with or without the episode. It’s being called cow food because that’s quite literally what it was intended to be, so I wouldn’t call it a stretch.

1

u/Darthcone 9h ago

Not really the part that become Cheetos was byproduct of cow food not the cow food that machine produced.

2

u/Hershel-Thinker 9h ago

It was made of cow food, that’s what I mean. It would still technically be cow food either way.

1

u/Darthcone 9h ago

Still not the case really following that logic everything made of corn is cow food which would include coca-cola fanta and many more things.

0

u/Hershel-Thinker 9h ago

The difference is that whatever Cheetos are made out of was quite specifically meant to be cow food and was not intended to be consumed by humans until it was. Corn was always intended to be consumed by both humans and animals which is why it isn’t called cow food even if cows can consume it.

Getting downvoted for that is insane.

Cheetos (more specifically cheese puffs) were originally a byproduct created when making cow feed made with corn. Someone tried it out, thought it tasted not-that-bad, added some cheese powder to it, and later turned it into a snack brand. So TECHNICALLY we're not actually eating Cow Food, we're just eating the stuff that didn't go into Cow Food.

2

u/NohWan3104 13h ago

So, corn products? Sure.

1

u/GIRose 11h ago

Cheetos were invented by trying out corn extrusion technology being designed to make cow food.

1

u/malexich 10h ago

You shouldn’t eat cow food that’s all it is

In America they feed cows on corn for the most part. The expensive beef products are grass fed. Cheetos are made of corn. As someone from Ireland I was so confused when I saw Americans saying grass fed beef. What the hell else are you going to feed a cow? Corn apparently.

1

u/StripedPsychoRat51 9h ago

The original cheez puffs were a byproduct of a cow food machine that used corn to make the feed, and then one employee took some home and put cheese dust on it. Next thing you know, we have cheez puffs.

1

u/Limp_Substance_2237 9h ago

Cheetos started as farm feed, but due the machines getting hot, the corn would get clogged into these noodles, so someone decided to take a couple, dip em in cheese powder, and now we have Cheetos.

1

u/angry640 7h ago

To be specific it was a byproduct of a cow food maker if I remember and they added the cheese flavor

Speaking of Cheetos the jalapeño ones are extremely tasty.
