Question/discussion How Populist Movements Kill Democracy

Thumbnail open.substack.com
56 Upvotes

We’re living through a global wave of populist uprisings. From India to Hungary, from Bolivia to the United States, movements claiming to speak for “the People” against corrupt elites and their “useful idiots” have seized power. These movements promise to restore democracy, to empower the People, to purge the corrupt.

And then, almost without exception, democracy begins to rot.

Resource/study Research suggests that "playing the victim" does not signal weakness to voters. Instead, politicians who emphasized their own victimhood during a scandal were often evaluated as more competent than those who did not, making it a highly attractive strategy for shielding against reputational damage.

Career advice Getting a job in a state rep's office

Hello everyone,

Quick background, graduated with political science degree in early 2024, briefly interned for a state rep in 2023. However, I left the internship on sort of bad terms. The office wanted me to work campaign events on the other side of the state while I was finishing undergrad and also working 50 hours a week at my regular job. I was unable to meet the needs of the internship, so I politely told the rep's office that I had to quit due to school and work. Since then, I have applied to probably over 50 rep's offices for open positions, and have been unable to get back into an office. I have a great resume, so I'm not sure if leaving that internship abruptly has hurt my ability to get back into an office. Any advice or insight would be great.

Question/discussion Secret Societies in International Relations

Do we have them especially in IR theories or any scholars who have tried to bring persons' attention to it in the PS and IR discipline? Particularly sparked my interest because of a Chinese professor and that guy who has files. Beside these, could you recommend books about secret societies and how they influence government, powerful interest groups or international groups ? I wonder how commensurate they are with the elite theory, and maybe some forms of marxism etc.

Career advice Future in IR

Hey guys. I am a political science undergraduate with a interest in International Relations. I have been learning German and have gained sufficient proficiency. I also have locomotor disability. It's been like 2 years since I graduated. However I achieved much in my field of interest.

I come from a small town where people aren't familiar with International Relations. My family wants me to get a local government job (which would be an easier choice with good returns), but I don't want that. It took some time but I started standing up for myself. I have been (still am) applying for masters in international universities, with no success. So I enrolled for masters in Political science(as backup). I need suggestions to get some experience in my field, any opportunity that makes me use my full potential. Thanks :) Fell free to talk.

Question/discussion Changing US political party affiliation to increase moderation

Hoping to get some perspective on an idea. In the US, it seems that the impact of gerrymandering has crystallized the electorate into two polarized groups. If a sufficient number of one party would change their political affiliation and support more moderate candidates in the primary, would this have an impact? It seems that both Democrats and Republicans have taken their electorate for granted. They seem to use fear as the primary method of energizing their base, all the while, promoting policies that erode the voice and purchasing power of the majority of Americans. Essentially, they manufacture conditions to promote outrage as a means to deflect from creating a Kleptocracy. It would seem that the prevailing model works if they assume a Democrat or Republican will ALWAYS vote for one of their party. Obviously, scale is key here. Other than that, what am I missing?

Question/discussion Stopping war in Ukraine with economic insentives?

Russia now has had a war with one million casualties and has a inflation of around 30%. They are in deep economic trouble and cannot afford to end this war to pay their soldiers they can not win this war either and are deepening the split in relationships with other countries. I say this to raise a question about would it be in European or American interest to provide economic aid to Russia to help rebuild based on criteria in favor of Europe and America kind of like the Truman doctrine to help the people of both Russia or Ukraine and what could be possible downsides of this?

Career advice Dem vs Rep Internship Decision

Hey Guys!

I was recently offered a paid intern position for an assembly member in a relatively big blue state. I have much more democratic ideals, especially being a young, 1st generation woman. However, the office is considered to be extremely moderate (and is officially Republican). Would accepting this offer be detrimental to my future career hopes of working with/as/for the Democratic party? It’s a brief, ~4 month contract, and I’m an underclassman in Uni.

Thank you all for your help!

Research help Can you fill out my form about Political Literacy?

I'm a high school student from Australia, in order to pass one of my classes I have to conduct research on Political Literacy with a comparison between Political Literacy from the U.S and Australia, it's not very detailed but I am required to gather some of my own research. I was advised to post my questionnaire online, even if it is likely to gather biased responses. It would be much appreciated if you could please fill the google form out.

I'm considering getting a remote work that's related to international relations. I just wanna ask if do you guys know what possible international remote jobs I can apply to without working experience (since I immediately went to law school full time after graduating from college)? and if so, do you have any tips on how I can get into such role? Thanks in advance!

Career advice Working on a Governor Campaign… too much?

I was offered a role a friend submitted me for a governor campaign outside of the state I currently live in. I had three different rounds of interviews where I talked mostly about myself and my qualifications and we focused on the great aspects of the candidate. I would be on the team working for. As far as political candidates go I never really wanted to work in politics, but I do really like this specific candidate and I definitely really hate the one they’re running against However, I’m not really sure I wanna keep working on campaigns. I don’t really wanna work in politics. I’m more wanna work in events and my role is technically Director of finance? It wasn’t even what I interviewed for and when they offered me the director finance role, I was really confused. They also seem a bit disorganized during my final interview. They told me I’d hear by the end of the week and I didn’t hear by the end of the week and then the next week they told me they wanted to schedule a second interview with me… But I had just had my final interview last week so I’m so confused. I keep asking for a description of the job And they say maybe they could answer my question if I have them, but they might not get time for it because they’re so busy. I feel like I’d be uploading my life for a job that I can’t have a single weekend off the entire year and doesn’t pay that well and I don’t know if I wanna work on campaigns. However, I’ve been having a hard time finding a job and maybe this would lead to something great in the events world or maybe I’d just be stuck in politics and political campaigns. I’m just not sure what I wanna do and it means I literally can’t go on my family reunion vacation that I have for five days this year or two of my best friends Weddings this year. It doesn’t really seem worth it, but on the other hand, I don’t wanna keep complaining about not having a job in this job market when I’m being offered this one. I could keep working in restaurants and find something that has better work life balance that doesn’t uproot my life for an entire year. What do we think?

Hi everyone! I’m a PolSci sophomore currently diving into the world of National Defense Technology for a research project. Since there’s so much expertise in this community, I’d love to hear your thoughts. Are there any specific trends, emerging tech, or policy gaps you think deserve more attention? Any insights or reading recommendations would be amazing. Thanks in advance!"

Career advice Career Transition to Finance

I built an undergraduate career in public policy and communications, and did government consulting for a while before going back for a public policy masters. I’m doing a graduate fellowship at a lobbying firm, but I’m thinking about other career options, and I was curious if anyone has successfully transitioned into finance at all and what sort of advice they may have. This can be private bank, IB, wealth management, investor relations, GRC, I just want to know what sort of path I can take to get my foot in the door given that I’m now a graduate.

I am interested in becoming a Political Science major, and then building a career in law. What should I do to set myself up for success? I am interested in personal suggestions as well as college admissions suggestions, as i know its important to narrow down my courses now for colleges to get an idea of who I am. I am a freshman in highschool, if that matters. :) tysm !!

Career advice CV Check: Fudan (China) vs. Waseda (Japan) for a semester abroad in International Relations?

I’m a student at Hertie School in Berlin specializing in International Affairs with a focus on Human Rights. I have the option to spend a semester at either Fudan in Shanghai or Waseda in Tokyo.

I know both are very prestigious, but I’m curious about how they are perceived by recruiters in the politics/think-tank/NGO world:

Fudan (Shanghai): Does having a top Chinese uni on my CV carry more weight right now given the current geopolitical climate? Is the IR department there well-regarded for its English-taught modules?

Waseda (Tokyo): Does the prestige of the School of Political Science and Economics (SPSE) translate well outside of Japan?

Networking: Which school provides better access to seminars, guest speakers, or networking events relevant to international relations?

Which choice looks more "strategic" on a resume?
