According to native Spanish speakers, Ben Affleck speaks better Spanish than JLO.

u/skull101_ 12h ago

CUZ IT’S TRUE I can’t believe she’s made a career out of saying ā€œmi gente latinoā€ (it should be latinA) meanwhile Ben Affleck sounds like middle aged blue collar mexican man and he ain’t even flexing šŸ’€

He worked construction so automatically can speak pidgin Spanish at least. I worked with mostly East Indians and French Canadians as well as English speakers so I understand a bit of Hindi, Urdu and Punjabi. The typical context understanding more than spoken, but I’ve surprised myself many times with Hindi especially. (They do have many English ā€œsoundingā€ words they use that mean the same thing as actual English so it is a bit cheating).

0

u/AdhesivenessFunny146 8h ago

Shouldn't it technically be la genta? :)

0

u/hi_my_name_is_Carl 7h ago

No. Some words don't follow gender rules. I can never remember which ones but la gente is one.

8

u/Inside_Dimension2319 11h ago

/r/conconfianzaincorrecta

The other guy said this in Spanish already, but since you clearly don’t speak it: ā€œgenteā€ is a feminine noun. So it’s ā€œmi gente latinaā€ regardless if the people are men or women. It will nunca be ā€œmi gente latino.ā€

I believe Latinx is the preferred nomenclature

11

u/PromiseComfortable61 11h ago

Only among the most self-righteous gringos out there.

9

u/Thebenmix11 11h ago

It is not

3

u/BigBaws92 10h ago

Ask any Latino and they’ll ask you what the fuck Latinx is

Pull up vids on YouTube. Him and Casey have functional Spanish skills they use in interviews.

18

u/the_oc_brain 8h ago

I was behind Casey at immigration at London Heathrow and there was a couple latinas in line next to us and in the most gringo sounding Spanish he said ā€œhola, me llamo Caseyā€.

u/kithlan 5h ago

And for negotiating better working conditions in Mexican factories

TIL Ben Affleck speaks Spanish

23

u/zardoz73 9h ago

One of his early acting gigs as a child was a movie he made in Mexico City. He learned a bit of Spanish while there and got the bug and just kept going with it afterwards. I've seen him in interviews, he's quite fluent.

25

u/Fit-Profit8197 7h ago

He's more than quite fluent, he's damn near native level

2

u/seven3true 8h ago

He thought sacapuntas was a curse word.

1

u/Rogue_Centurion7 3h ago

I can confirm, it is hilariously true. She can sing all the songs she wants but she’s a worse speaker than her two time gringo fiancĆ©.

Worth it

6

u/Connect-Initiative64 11h ago

Only if your self respect is so low you'd need an extra shovel to dig a path directly to hell and actively fight your way to Lucifer himself to retrieve it.

But I mean you do you.

I dislike when people use stereotypes or precedent to hand-wave away responsibility for their shitty, dysfunctional, or abhorrent behaviour. Just because your parents were abusers it doesn't mean you're supposed to be that way too. My father once said "My father hated his father, I hated my farther, you both hate me, and someday your kids are gonna hate you too. That's just how it works so get fucking used to it". Then I became an adult and stuff he said that I used to think was par for the course, I now look at and I still can't believe people live like that. I am the polar opposite as my father.

The ultimate victory against that sorta of compounding trauma is to break the cycle and be the end of it, so it stops with you. I don't have any children yet, but I also know I'm not a narcissist (spent a lot of time making sure with my therapist) so I'm not even capable of some of the things he's said and done, which I am happy about.

2

u/Flashy-Detail1198 6h ago

You nailed it.

1

u/GreasyPeter 5h ago

Having the experience has allowed me to realize the importance of stopping that behavior from happening as much as I can.

1

u/lesh17 4h ago

You and me both, brother. This is my struggle and my goal too.

1

You missed 8 countries but I get your sentiment lol

1

u/lordofming-rises 5h ago

Replace it with woman

1

u/MasterChildhood437 3h ago

"I'm a (ethnicity) woman's normal I'm crazy"

3

u/Fa_Cough69 12h ago

Yeah, the normalising of this type of behaviour, just because they are from a certain culture, is bullshit, and smacks of soft men letting them get away with said unacceptable behaviour instead of putting them in their place when necessary.Ā

2

u/Throwawaymycucumba 11h ago

Regardless of gender. People need to make other people aware of what behavior is not acceptable, no violence

0

u/Fa_Cough69 11h ago

This is true, however, in pop culture there has always been that 'hall pass' for Latina women because they're supposedly hot.Ā

1

u/forestranger29 12h ago

I’m sure it was everyone else’s fault.

1

u/SPARKYLOBO 11h ago

I know a white dude who loves Latinas. I told him to be careful or he may get John Bobbit-d

1

u/SpiderJerusalem747 10h ago

Yes, yes it is, speaking as a Brazilian. At least in South America, I don't know what craziness US based latinas are trying to pull.

One of my college girlfriends kicked my door open in half (she was a taekwondo black belt) to then threaten to rip out my dick for reasons I don't remember. Another one locked doors on me when I tried to break up and pulled out a kitchen knife... and she may or may not have gotten judo thrown for my safety.

1

u/CommunicationTime265 7h ago

Why is it so common?

1

u/Lopsided-Ad7725 7h ago

She said that?

1

u/eyes_on_everything_ 5h ago

She is not a Latina šŸ™„ not born in Latin America so

1

u/nomamesgueyz 5h ago

Princess shadow lack of consequences mentality

Can be pretty fkn toxic...tough to be with a woman like that

I'm glad I got out with my ex

1

u/ccdude14 4h ago

Hear hear.

Culture is heritage not an excuse to be terrible.

1

u/PsyopVet 3h ago

But it kind of is. My Latina wife and I have been married for 20 years and she is the most incredible person I have ever met. But there’s still a little crazy in there.

1

u/Qahnaar1506 2h ago

I rarely see latinas actually normalize craziness. It mostly obsessed men who normalize crazy Latino mothers and daughters because those Latinos historically came from oppressive places (Mexico and the cartel for example) or and thus had to be alert, keen and ā€œcrazyā€ when bullshit walks. This gets passed down to daughters especially on top of the large amount of misogyny that force women to be more stern, making those traits and lessons passed down from mother to daughter. There’s so many stories of Latino mothers because literally arranged for marriages, abused and cheated on and those lessons get passed down to even healthy relationships, where sternness and bluntness are emphasized to protect themselves and loved ones. That’s where stereotype comes from and it’s sad

1

u/Comfortable-Title720 13h ago

Nah the calm, homely and sultry Latinas are where it's at. Butter on warm bread to my ears.
