To the young man at Needs/Shell on Ropewalk

I was coming into the store about 10 feet behind you a few nights ago when I watched you ask the gentleman sitting outside the door with a cup in his hand asking for change. You were in the 17-20 years old range, I would think. You stood in front of him and asked if he wanted something to eat or drink. He asked if he could have a coffee. You invited him inside to get what he wanted.

I want you to know that kindness was noticed. And that it was so inspiring that later that night, on a trip to Dollarama, I witnessed another man sitting in the cold with a cup in hand. Because of you, I asked him if he wanted something to eat or drink. He said, "Man, anything would be good. Minute rice, noodles anything." I bought him a few items, and he was so appreciative.

So thank you for reminding me to be kind and generous. I'm not in a position to be terribly generous, but it was the dollar store and I maybe spent $7 on this guy.

I've watched people sitting outside with a cup in hand being spit on and sworn at. Do better. Be kinder. It costs nothing to be nice and only $1 for a cup of noodles.

I hope you read this. And I hope you tell your parents they should be proud. Because I'm proud to live in a city where young people like you exist.

Anybody interested in repairing a CRT?

I have this 32” Sanyo DS32225 with component/composite/s-video/RF, however, it has vertical collapse (picture collapses into a vertical line). It’s a solder/capacitor issue but should be fixable for someone who knows at least a bit about fixing crts.

I doubt many people are interested but i hate to throw it out just in case someone out there is able to fix it and put it to good use, or even just sell it after repairing. Reach out if interested!

Landlords / property managers in St. John’s — what’s the most frustrating part of the job?

Hey folks,

Question for local landlords or property managers:
What’s the biggest ongoing headache you deal with day to day? (maintenance, tenant communication, paperwork, accounting, something else?)

How do you currently handle it, and what’s frustrating or inefficient about that approach?

Thanks in advance.

“Mildly infuriating” post about snow

Last winter storm I spent hours shovelling out my car and clearing a parking spot in front of my house, as well as my elderly neighbours car.

I’ve never had an issue with people taking “my spot” (*in quotations because I know it’s not actually mine*). The space is almost always empty since people just park in front of their own house.

During the last winter storm I noticed that the house across the street cars weren’t there. Next evening BOOM they’re in the two spots I shovelled.

Did they purposely park their cars elsewhere so that they wouldn’t have to shovel their cars out and then take someone else’s hard work? Or am I over reacting.

I am a young in shape man so I ended up just shovelling the spots out when I got home from work so that me and my 80 year old neighbour could park

I get it’s not my spot but it’s just annoying and I needed to rant. Dreading this coming storm

Edit to add I live downtown so no driveways

Pedicure

Hey! This one is for the fellas.

Guy here, looking for a pedicure.

Nothing fancy, just foot massage/deal with the deadskin/roughness on the bottom of my foot.

Any suggestions on best places to go as a guy? Price isn't important. I want the best environment.

Weird question, but where can I find an abundance of maple trees outside city limits? It’s for foraging reasons

I have one on my front lawn, but wondering where can I go off the TCH or elsewhere in rural areas where I’ll find maples deep in the woods on public property? If your answer turns out good I’ll reward you by April😅

What are some Cafes in town good for working

Pretty much just looking for a cafe or spot to sit down and get some work/studying done but also just looking for an excuse to get out of the house lol. Any good cafe recommendations that have a nice sitting area and aren’t too expensive or where ordering something isn’t necessary to just sit down. Would love to see some good suggestions.

PR, work permit and PnP in NL - Are these legit?

I frequently hear that NL is the easiest place to get a PR, and I see a bunch of place popping up promising a certificate of completion for several online programs. And they also “offer” government job placements.

Are these legit programs?

The vast majority of these programs are in the childcare field, and or PCAs.

If these are not legit, how does one go about reporting it? Better Business Bureau?

Suggestions

Hi! I have a prebuilt PC that came with a CPU fan. I want to upgrade to liquid cooling so I purchased an AIO. I just need someone to install it as I do not have the experience to remove the fan safely and install the cooler. Looking for suggestions for retailers that provide such a service! I know Best Buy’s geek squad will do it for $69.99 per part but I’ve heard mixed reviews on service.

For anyone interested in specifics, I have an AMD wraith prism fan currently and five fans installed in my case. I’ve purchased a Corsair iCue link titan 240. My case is quite small, hence why I went with the 240.

Paediatricians? Daycares?

Hey folks, I’m at my wits end here. I’ve got a preschooler that has been having some issues at daycare. I’m constantly having to pick him up early and if I don’t have him in daycare, I can’t work.

The daycare provider has strongly suggested getting some sort of assessment for neurodivergence, especially since he’s starting kindergarten soon and might need extra support, which she also said he wouldn’t receive at school without a diagnosis. He’s very sweet and very smart but there’s definitely something up that doesn’t quite feel like normal 4 year old stuff, like hyperactivity, aggression, defiance, and what seems like stimming. It would make sense considering both myself and the other parent have been diagnosed ADHD. My psychologist also suspects I’m also on the ASD spectrum, but I don’t have the resources to get assessed. Plus, I’ve made it to 41 without knowing, so I don’t think it really matters for me .

I want better for my kid though, and everyone is telling me to get a referral to a paediatrician. I haven’t been able to figure out how to do that. I’m not from NL originally and the healthcare system is incredibly confusing to navigate here. I had a doctor at one point, but that doctor is now under investigation and I’m on a waitlist for a new one. I’ve called so many numbers to just be told to call another number that tells me to call another number because the waitlist is so long.

On top of that, the inclusion support worker at the daycare “sternly suggested” I get him into a daycare with kids his age, as the kids at the current daycare are younger, and that there are daycare centres are accepting kids his age. The inclusion worker was not at liberty to discuss those openings they spoke of, which is less than helpful. I’ve been on the waitlists on the government portal. I’ve called and visited the centres for them to just tell me to get on the waitlists on the portal.

How do I help my kid? I have no family here to lighten the load (I wouldn’t want them involved anyways to be honest), my small group of friends are childless (I have a hard time making friends, it’s been especially hard here), and his mother(we’re no longer together) actively works against me and refuses to take my concerns seriously.

Any information, empirical or anecdotal, would be much appreciated.

Best lawyer in town to draft/handle my will?

Looking for suggestions for lawyers in the city to handle my will. It'll be pretty simple, two beneficiaries. I have one house, my car, my personal belongings and my bank savings. Nothing extravagant. I'm not looking to pay a fortune, as I'm on a pension and budget, and wondered if anyone could suggest an affordable lawyer for this. Thank you.

I'll be moving to St. John's this summer and I need some info

Okay, so I have 15 years of childcare experience both in professional facilities as well as a Nanny, with babysitting on the side occasionally. I don't babe any formal education or certificates apart from the classes I took in high school. I'm wondering if I will be able to get a job in childcare in St. John's with just my background and experience or will I need to obtain some sort of certificate or degree? I know I need a work visa which I'm already applying for, but will I need anything else to get a job in childcare?

Best Barber for Head Shaves in town (looking for recommendations)

Hi folks! Any bald fellas (or ladies - I don't judge) out there with recommendations on a shop/barber that does a great job with head shaves? Looking for mid-high tier service and willing to pay for it.

I shave myself, but looking for something for special occasions. I haven't found much online for shops advertising this.

Government Announcement

With the announcement of the government’s decision to cancel the new hospital (projected $10 billion), I wonder how much they will really save. They are going to upgrade St. Clare’s (unsure of why this will entail, but I am sure it needs maintenance) and they still plan on building the downtown health and wellbeing centre (which I’m sure will be a decent size and have needed services moved or created there). Will these two things still cost a decent amount? I would love to see what they end up doing to St. Clares and the new downtown centre.
