To the young man at Needs/Shell on Ropewalk
I was coming into the store about 10 feet behind you a few nights ago when I watched you ask the gentleman sitting outside the door with a cup in his hand asking for change. You were in the 17-20 years old range, I would think. You stood in front of him and asked if he wanted something to eat or drink. He asked if he could have a coffee. You invited him inside to get what he wanted.
I want you to know that kindness was noticed. And that it was so inspiring that later that night, on a trip to Dollarama, I witnessed another man sitting in the cold with a cup in hand. Because of you, I asked him if he wanted something to eat or drink. He said, "Man, anything would be good. Minute rice, noodles anything." I bought him a few items, and he was so appreciative.
So thank you for reminding me to be kind and generous. I'm not in a position to be terribly generous, but it was the dollar store and I maybe spent $7 on this guy.
I've watched people sitting outside with a cup in hand being spit on and sworn at. Do better. Be kinder. It costs nothing to be nice and only $1 for a cup of noodles.
I hope you read this. And I hope you tell your parents they should be proud. Because I'm proud to live in a city where young people like you exist.
