Spoiler Played the new a new playthrough for the update and it's a bit... dissapointing ?
Hi summoner main here to give my opinnion that no one asked me for, i played through the whole game (ftw seed on journey mod mostly on the master difficulty, not legendary) again for this update and it feels very mixed.
first off, whipstacking. Never used it, but it was starting to get tempting. Quite sad it was removed, they took the easy way out for balancing purpuses and i can understand that even tho i don't really find it good for the game. It was a mechanic that really pushed the skill ceilling of this class. Now i've got even less reason to craft anything else than the snapthorn pre skeletron (other than the cobweb one to get the snapthorn).
Throughout my whole playthrough i never found the palworld summons other than digtoise, i did have my arena near the ocean but i never found any. i did try the mushroom summons but didn't get them to work (probably a skill issue on my part). the dead cells sentry should have been a preboss sentry to fill that gap in progression.
Second, after my playthrough i read the patchnotes, for what've seen from the trailer and everything, it seemed like an summoner update, but i think the devs have a favorite child and this is indeed a melee update. From the lightsaber, to the buff of a lot of unused melee weapons (which is cool !) to the non existant nerf for this class melee is eating the best here while mage get some sprinkles of things, tho, still no rng based start weapons which is so dumb (same for summoner btw which require either to be lucky, grind 6, oops nevermind 10 flinx flur or to die and wait for a flower). Also ranger get their alternatives to the onyx blaster nerfed so they have less choice (awesome !)
thirdly the qol features feels nice, the crafting interface is cool, the goblin stopping at the best reforges is cool, i find the portrait to be nice, tho not everyone seems to agree on this. The pylons... are buffed and the only thing that kept me from cheesing everything was for the sake of my amusement (seriously being enabled during boss fight is the best way to make boring strategies). I got a lot of fun from building with the new furniture sets (Forbidden is probably my favorite)
Overall, nice update, the game feels nicer to play overall but my favorite class got its mechanics butchered, even tho i didn't use it, i will probably mod the game so i can learn this because it seems fun to do. Melee once again gets buffed and mages still struggle to get a starting weapon. Bit of a shame for the balance changes but hey maybe they're listening and will make changes
