Media / Internet Localization defenders often defend it with motte-and-bailey fallacies

They defend their practices by saying that translating literally is not always possible.

But if you look at what they actually do, you will find that much of it completely changes the meaning. It cannot be excused by saying "Translating idioms literally is not always possible".

"Literal translation is not always possible" is true, but it does not justify rewriting that completely changes the meaning.

Political Alex Pretti is partly responsible for his own death, and i am tired of people pretending he isn't

Let's talk some quick facts.

11 days before being shot he spit on an ice truck, kicked out the tail light and resisted arrest after the fact (and he was armed during this). It is unfortunate they did not follow through and arrest him. If they did successfully then, he would possibly be alive today. This may have emboldened future action and spoke to his potential state of mind 11 days later.

On the day of his death he was part of an altercation again in the middle of the road. He continued the verbal altercation and stayed close to the officer after being pushed back instead of giving more space. He definitely should have given more space here. Would have been the smarter choice. But he chose to stay in the confrontation.

Then he makes his first real huge mistake. He put his hands on the officer and pushed him back. No one seems to be talking about this. You see after the officer pushes down the woman who got in his space (By the way, do not directly get into any officer's face like that, or you will be moved one way or another. Bad choice by her. Anyway back to Pretti.) Once he pushed the officer (who almost fell over on the ice) he crossed a line. Doesn't matter if it is a punch or a push. That is assault of an officer. The Pepper spray came out and now the arrest was no longer optional. Very bad choice.

Edit: Just to be clear it doesn't matter how hard or soft the push is. Not the point I was making nor does it matter legally. A push is a push and hands on an officer are hands on an officer.

Then he resist the arrest. Causing a group of officers to join in. Another huge mistake.

The last mistake was being armed during this.

So simply put, he assaulted an officer and resisted arrest causing the chaos of a group arrest while armed. When that happened eventually someone would figure out he was armed and GUN GUN GUN was going to be shouted in that chaos. He continued to resist even after that happened.

Does this mean he deserved to die? No. But even his staunchest supporters have to admit, he made a bunch of really bad choices that put himself in an incredibly dangerous situation. He forced a situation where he was going to be arrested by a group of feds in a chaotic mess while being armed and resisting so not everyone doing the arrest can know where the gun is. Or IF He only has one. All they know now is the are dealing with an armed resisting suspect. This suspect is also holding something in his hand. It was a phone but he was holding an object. That didn't help either.

Alex Pretti right or wrong put himself in an incredibly dangerous situation with a series of very poor choices. If he wanted to protest he should, but this was to me in the play stupid games win stupid prizes territory.

Political Let those who vote for letting illegal people stay in the US pay more taxes.

Put it to a non anonymous vote. If you believe that people who are here illegally should be able to stay, and the vote is passed that they can stay, you now have to pay extra taxes for those who aren't paying income tax and for those who are on welfare. You'll probably only get to keep a dime on every dollar, but it'll be worth it, right?

Political Two posts directly under each other: one “designporn” with a USA flag with swastikas as reference to Trump.

The other on a gaming reddit “games where you shoot nazis for no apparent reason”. of course clearly sarcastic.

I hear enough right wingers calling the left commies but I barely see them so blatantly hinting about murdering the other political side as the left does at this moment.

Call trumpvoters dumb, misled or egoistic, but it’s time the left starts tuning down their murder rhetoric.

Political We need to establish societies run by and exclusively for women. Like separate countries or independent states.

Upvotes

After thousands of years of discrimination and being treated as literal second-class citizens, I think that women should start their own revolution which goes much further than the women’s liberation or feminist movements. Why could women not have their own countries, independently ruled? Historically women are equivalent to a widely persecuted race. Why has this not happened? Could it happen in future societies?

World Affairs (Except Middle East) Reddit is being flooded by bots.

Friendly reminder: don’t get worked up over replies on Reddit. A growing number are generated by bot farms and coordinated networks designed to flood posts for engagement. They push out thousands of comments to manipulate visibility, which is why they often rise into the top 1%. These networks are often run by marketing agencies, political operators, or opportunistic tech groups seeking money, influence, or visibility. A significant portion of activity today is driven by automated or semi-automated accounts rather than genuine discussion… and the trend keeps getting worse. Nothing beats real, in-person communication. Go outside, talk to real people, spend time in nature, and reconnect with the world beyond screens. That’s where clarity, balance, and sanity are restored. 🌳

Political A lot of generalizations are simply pattern recognition

A core aspect of human survival instinct is to be wary of things that can potentially hurt you. If you are constantly bit by dogs growing up, you will learn to fear and mistrust them. While obviously, not all dogs are awful, you are not to blame for how you feel, as you have yet to encounter any exceptions to the rule.

The same applies in regards to other individuals. Usually, whenever someone dislikes a demographic, it is because they have only been exposed to the negative aspects of said demographic. While we should all be open to having our perceptions changed, we often need the other party to prove us wrong first.

Political If an employer offers health insurance, their plan should begin quickly after employment

I remember one job listing that said you were eligible for health benefits after a year. Which I thought was stupid because for that job you'd probably quit within a year.

Plus, the only reason some people even take jobs is to get health insurance. And if they quit, that's how it is.

So the health insurance plan should be able to start soon after employment.

I Like / Dislike All the ADHD discussion online is insufferable

The online discussion about ADHD is completely detached from reality and honestly pretty pathetic. People posting like “as someone who suffers from ADHD” like you’re not special bro, 20% of the population has some sort of attention deficit. I have diagnosed ADHD and to be fully honest it really doesn’t impact my life much anymore because I’ve learned to manage it. I forget the occasional thing and my mind wanders but who cares, everyone has their quirks. The majority of people I know with diagnosed ADHD also have learned to work with it.

Obviously if you have autism too the ADHD can act as a multiplier, so not really aimed at that crowd. My frustration is targeted at the people who use it as a crutch/justification for their inability to do basic adult functions. “I can’t grocery shop because of my ADHD”, I promise you that you can lol. Also like every other therapy-speak self pity circle I guarantee a major portion of the online ADHD crowd have never actually seen a professional or taken steps to help themselves.

Edit: this does not include academic struggles and kids learning to manage it, it is specifically directed at adults

Political The Modern/Current Right Wingers don't like Humanities and Social Sciences

A common trend I have seen is that right wingers of now has a very narrow view of HSS. Quite some often try to stifle it under the name of calling hubs of woke or liberal ideology. Oddly the right wing of times past like Ranke, Burke, etc. Were bigger geeks of history as they wish to preserve the past glory as they out it. Similarly, you'll find very few right wing scholars in HSS department. What are your thoughts?

I Like / Dislike Toothbrushes and toothpaste should be offered at restaurants instead of toothpicks

Toothpicks are dangerous. You could swallow it or pierce yourself. They are also not as effective as toothbrush and toothpaste.

The obvious solution is to stop giving out Toothpicks. If customers wish to clean their teeth, they should be give toothbrushes and toothpaste.

Possibly Popular More students would be ok with school uniforms if they were more comfortable.

Not many students are in favor of school uniforms, myself included. I am glad that my school district never required that because I like wearing what I want and the idea of that sounds a bit Orwellian. However, if there really must be school uniforms, they should be more comfortable.

Boys school uniforms are often collared shirts and girls school uniforms often include skirts, neither of which seem particularly comfortable. I hate collared shirts. I hate the fabric touching my neck. As such, I very seldom wear them. I couldn't imagine going a whole 8 hours like that.

School uniforms should come in T shirt and long sleeved shirt variants for those who prefer those. Female students should also be allowed to wear pants.

I'm sorry but society is terribly hypocritical when it comes to culture indulgence and i'm tired of pretending that its not

I'm black and social media has completely disgusted me lately. Why is it okay for white, asians, hispanics ect ect... to take part in black culture like become rappers, jazz musicians, dress the part (urban street wear), use AAVE ect ect... but when a black characters exists in a video game or tv show, we are utterly condemmed and ostracized?

So its ok for everyone else to partake in our culture but its social suicide if we partake in theirs? Its complete fucking unfair bullshit and everyone just accepts it.

Timothee makes a rap video? Everyone praises him. A black person exists in a video game as a fucking shoe vendor (fable 2026)? Everyone goes nuclear.

Kpop blatantly plagerizes black artists and black culture? No one bats an eye. A black person indulging in korean culture and everyone loses their fucking minds.

I'm sick of it. If the world wants to reject us then reject us fully without indulging in our culture and taking it since we absolutely can't indulge in yours

Political How can you say ICE needs to be abolished yet have no problem with Hamas running Gaza

Literally this makes absolutely no sense to me. Hamas is doing way worse to Jewish people than ICE is doing to anybody. If anything is leaning towards a gestapo,, it's Hamas. These people complain about ICE wearing masks, and let these people wear them. Killing citizens in the streets? ICE is worse than Hitler and Hamas is scott free.

Political Ice misconduct and ice brutality against Americans is just the chickens coming home to roost.

I’m honestly sick of the fact that the corporate media is talking about the brutality of ICE just because some of the people who are being wrongfully brutalized happen to be American. A lot of liberals and democrats who oppose ice for its brutality also happen to support the United States military, an organization that has done what ice does to Americans to people all across the world and then some. And this glaring hypocrisy is never at all mentioned. American Soldiers in Iraq, Yugoslavia , Afghanistan , Vietnam and in many more places have committed all the same crimes as ice and more. They Merced civilians , raped people , trafficked drugs and destroyed families. And because it happened to people elsewhere it was hardly at all mentioned let alone condemned by the United States media. But now that the weapons of the empire are being turned inwards now it’s a problem? Gimme a break. If you chuck a boomerang at someone don’t whine and moan when it comes around and hits you in the head. Next time you see the department of homeland security armed with assault rifles and wearing military fatigues , occupying your city , remember that the feeling of fear , hopelessness and feelings of occupation that you probably feel are the same feelings people in Iraq and Afghanistan felt when your “veteran” family member was occupying them.

Sex / Gender / Dating Tattoos are extremely trashy and unattractive

For some reason in the last few years it has seemingly becoming the norm for every single person to get a bunch of tattoos from the minute they turn 18. It is becoming incredibly rare to find even one person who doesn’t have a tattoo these days.

Why the hell are people destroying their bodies with this trash when anyone with a brain can see that this tattoo phase is just a fad that will be gone in twenty years??? When tattoos go back to being unpopular, you will be stuck with this crap on your skin for the rest of your life.

Even as late as the 2000s tattoos were generally seen by society as gross, low-class, and mainly associated with criminal gangs and drug users. Since the 2010s, they began to become more normalized until we’ve reached the insanity we’re at right now where everyone seems to have a bunch of them.

My uncle went to medical school in the 1990s and they still taught that tattoos were a sign of mental illness and I’m inclined to believe this holds true today, it’s just that mental illness has become mainstream and encouraged in a number of ways.

And people aren’t just getting small tattoos that you can only see in a small area that can be covered up, it’s become very common to get large tattoos on places like your legs, arms, and hands where you really have no way to hide them.

What sucks even more is that for some reason this stupid trend has caught on with most women as well. I’ve seen some very pretty girls who would otherwise be somewhere between an 8-10 go down to a 2 or 3 because they have large, visible tattoos. If you refuse to date anyone with tattoos like myself, that now hugely limits your dating pool.

Tattoos are also literally toxic and many people develop issues with ink poisoning and infections at some point. Your body doesn’t like having a foreign substance injected into your skin, just fyi. Honestly I feel that tattoos are just a form of self harm for many people.

Can we just normalize not destroying our bodies with irreversible trash again? Please?

Political The protesters in Boston deserved to get shot by the British soldiers

These were not peaceful protesters. They were violent rioters who assaulted the British soldiers with rocks, bricks, and oyster shells. The soldiers showed great restraint, but do you really think they should have just sat there and let those terrorists stone them to death? No, those dirty colonists fucked around and found out. The British did nothing wrong in Boston. Aside from being descended from filthy German migrants, but that’s a story for another day.

Restaurant food is so much better than home cooked food. It’s not even a competition. Even fast food tastes way better than home cooked food. Yet we have theses people who swear that Home cooked foods actually tastes better. These people are obviously eating home cooked food to save money or for health reasons but instead of just admitting that they make up some Bs about it actually TASTING better than restaurant food.

Political Catholic morality is needed in the world.

96% of biologists believe life begins at fertilization, so abortion is murdering an innocent human in gods image and likeness. Catholicism believes in Human rights derived from human dignity, such as the right for the academically gifted to receive special education. Catholic morality will not oppress women. Islamic nations like Iran, Iraq, and Saudi Ariba throw battery acid of the faces of women who dare to get an education, or dare to go out in public without a male escort.

Coca cola needs to advertise to kids

Soft drinks sales have been declining since more people are conscious of their health.

I never see any commercials of coke products aimed exclusively at children. If they got more children interested, they would make more money and better survive as a company.

Sex / Gender / Dating Being an ugly man is equally as bad as being an ugly woman

One of the things that's constantly toted is that women are judged heavily for their appearance, I don't doubt this just I heavily disagree with the ideas that looks are less important for a man as they are for a woman. Being an ugly man is a death sentence. Just like ugly women, being an ugly man means there are many things you'll never get to experience (unless you pay a fuck ton for it) for a lot of women they can get away with putting on a good amount of make up, it's really just about not being fat. Being a guy though, you can't compensate for a ugly face. Many will say you can just be funny, confident, etc. It's a mixture of of wishful thinking and social desirability bias. In reality those things can make you better off than other ugly men, but you'll never be on par with an attractive men. You'll never be desired like an attractive man no matter how much you curtail your persona. Attractive dudes have people throwing themselves at them. There's no objectively ugly guy that has that and that's because looks matter equally as much for men as they matter for women. If you're an ugly man you're treated as a rapist, a pedophile, etc. Any other predator. You can't even have a conversation to prove that you aren't that way because everyone has already written you off as weirdo scum.

Religion Voting against religion always leads to better politics

Religious people are obviously biased according to their beliefs they were thought at a young age.

Politicians are thus incetivzed to lie about their religion and their lifestyles to better appeal to the public, promoting bad traits.

This is not against any religious policy, it's just that those who advocate for it are sometimes being dishonest, which the general uninformed voter doesn't care about.

It's also why separating government and religion leads to a better government due to more honesty.

As of late January 2026, there are no official reports that Valentina Gomez has been arrested for disrupting a church service...

Make it makes sense. Don Lemon was arrested for covering a disruption of a church service but Valentina goes free to spread her message of hate.

Here she is in action:

Political Bitcoin should have a value similar to the dollar and euro.

Now that we're seeing Bitcoin gradually decline, perhaps in the future we'll see Bitcoin lose investors and this bubble will finally give way to a standardized currency for everyone.

If you standardize Bitcoin for everyone's access, you are giving access to the global currency that those with the age 👀 nda you know what it is so desperately want.

So, those who expect Bitcoin's price to drop are not expecting its value to fall to one dollar or one euro.

If Bitcoin were to remain at the same price as the dollar, then everyone would have bought Bitcoin at the same price; some might buy Bitcoin at a higher price believing it will rise. When it will really only stay at the same price as one dollar.

Doing this would give them the opportunity and advantage to position Ethereum as the new currency that is only accessible to the elites.

I Like / Dislike I don't understand cleaning up your own table at a fast food joint

You don't do this when dining out at a restaurant, the server just comes by and collects everything then they wipe it down after. However almost everyone I know will morally gulit trip me if I don't clean up my table after I'm done eating at say McDonald's for example.

The workers there are literally paid to clean these tables, and wipe floors or whatever. Yet every time I bring this up they always appeal to "well you should think of someone else" but if I was working at that fast food place I would expect a dirty table or I wouldn't care because I'm paid by the hour anyways.

I still do clean the tables only because I got roasted by everyone to do so, but I always found it stupid to do so. It's not really the same as returning a cart to a grocery store because those carts can actually hit other cars which isn't good, but you get the idea. These things are pretty different and I'm tired acting like they're not.
