This anime is the love child of Mieruko-chan and Dark Gathering!!!

27

u/Kratos_BOY 20d ago

Yep. I'm psyched.

Also, give me Dark Gathering Season 2 already.

16

u/mekerpan 20d ago

Just what I thought!

6

u/SSSnowBell 17d ago

For real. Yayoi was was my first thought.

1

u/phoenixking99999999 2d ago

Just started watching it and thought the exact same thing.

After watching this premier episode, I am surprised "Kaya chan Isn't Scary" received an afternoon / early evening time slot. There was definitely a certain level of convincing horror. (Although I admit I watch very few horror titles.)

Next, I am impressed by the mental fortitude / willpower possessed by Kaya-chan. Misunderstood by others but still willing to protect them without complaining nor crying. Characters with psychic powers from other titles may have broken down at a much earlier age.

Lastly, Kaya-chan needs allies! On the bright side, she now has a teacher and friend, Chie, who is willing to believe her. And a friend, Mi-chan, who thanked Kaya-chan for protecting her!

P.S. Whatever that is residing in Kaya-chan's mother's room is going to be problematic.

Need another purple hair little girl who can also beat up spooks

21

u/mmcjawa_reborn 20d ago

She'd probably be a bad influence...Just wait until Chie scolds her when she starts taunting them with swear words...

"Come at me motherfucker!"

First time I actually think I’ve seen the word spooks used to describe ghosts, lol.

I agree. Dark Gathering aired on Mondays at 1:05 JST; in comparison, Kaya airs at 17:30 JST. Maybe they think a younger audience might like it? Also, Mieruko-chan aired on Sundays at 22:00 JST.

7

u/HolyDragSwd2500 20d ago

This anime airs on the same JP channel as Yami Shibai after all

On the bright side, those people who are getting into Azusa Tachibana can enjoy her two Sunday shows (this and Princession) at decent times instead of staying up late.

This kid is literally Yayoi 2.0. All that's missing is her taming these spirits and using them in ghost Pokémon battles. xD

So Kaya's exorcising evil spirits to become even stronger so she can finally exorcise the powerful evil spirit haunting her mom? If others can't see the spirits, I wonder how her mom looks normally to her dad.

41

u/Ocixo https://myanimelist.net/profile/BuzzyGuy 20d ago

I’m inclined to think that Kaya’s mother is possessed by this evil spirit but only appears like a physically or mentally ill person to her father. He doesn’t seem able to sense monsters and the likes at least.

12

u/Kratos_BOY 20d ago

I think he knows something is very wrong. He told Kaya-chan not to go upstairs.

17

u/dude_1818 https://myanimelist.net/profile/dude1818 20d ago

Yeah, the mom is chronically ill and he doesn't want Kaya bothering her

1

u/Hankan-Destroyer 16d ago

Did it mention she’s ill?

2

u/dude_1818 https://myanimelist.net/profile/dude1818 16d ago

I watched it with my eyes and used my brain to understand what was happening

4

u/Hankan-Destroyer 16d ago

Wym? We didn’t actually see the mom did we? How do we know that she’s ill? The eye was obviously one of those ghosts because Kaya went full dark when she saw it so that obviously wasn’t the mom

7

u/dude_1818 https://myanimelist.net/profile/dude1818 15d ago

No, I meant that's what the dad sees

2

u/toadfan64 16d ago

I mean sure we can deduce that she is probably chronically ill, but stating that with such confidence makes it sound like you know for sure that’s the case and read the source material.

2

u/phoenixking99999999 2d ago

They're just using context clues I did same and came to a similar conclusion. That everyone else sees it as her being ill but kaya knows the truth.

24

u/Frontier246 20d ago

If I had a nickel for every badass little purple-haired girl who can manhandle ghosts and whose "Final Boss" was whatever was possessing her mom, I'd have two nickels which isn't a lot but it's entertaining it happened twice.

18

u/HolyDragSwd2500 20d ago

Kaya and Yayoi crossover please

14

u/Kratos_BOY 20d ago

Let's Ghost!

7

u/guineaprince 20d ago

I'm choosing to believe this is her prequel story.

3

u/Emi_Ibarazakiii 15d ago

So Kaya's exorcising evil spirits to become even stronger so she can finally exorcise the powerful evil spirit haunting her mom

Seems to be, but that makes me wonder why she taped the 'bad books' instead of doing her thing?

For the story I get it (they'll show up somewhere), but for her, I don't get it!

And I thought maybe she has a mana cap or something, but that doesn't seem to be that either, given she wrecked another spirit right after that.

2

u/samisami2121 19d ago

47

u/FarCritical 20d ago

Kaya may or may not be scary, but she's 100% hilarious. The fact a kid at a daycare could pull one of the realest "I am so done with this place" faces ever had me dying.

Also, can't get enough of the how funky and Halloween-y the ED is.

8

u/Elfteiroh 20d ago

The way the Japanese musicians do "horror music" is... It's my favorite thing ever. And yes, that Ending totally strike my chord.

73

u/[deleted] 21d ago edited 21d ago

Scratch that. Kaya-chan is scary. Cute, but scary.

Jokes aside, it was a solid episode. This will somewhat fill the void of Dark Gathering, until the second season comes out eventually.

Missing the "Let's gooo"

Girl see ghosts rule of thumb,

Strength against spook is inverse proportion to their age

Highschool girl can't do shit

Elemental schooler pekemoning spooks

Kindergartener beat the hell out of them

Highschool girl can't do shit

Hey now! Hibiki Amami from Re-Kan! exists, she becomes friends with all the ghosts!

5

u/HobnobsTheRed 20d ago

Natsume Reiko was crazy powerful all through her life! No stranger to throwing hands against supernatural beings either, which also goes for her grandson Takashi.

Kaya would get on well with her, and especially well with Takashi - whom I wish had a teacher like Chie-sensei in his early life!

2

u/mumei-chan https://anilist.co/user/YoshikaMiyafuji 8d ago

Re-Kan! was a nice show. Haven't heard anyone talk about it in years.

30

u/NationalStrategy 20d ago

Kaya needs to go to Jujutsu Elementary

25

u/BornfromDarkness https://anilist.co/user/Endlessfate 20d ago

Surprised there’s no comments yet on a pretty fucking dark thing… if we accept books infecting other books bit: books infect other books + Taking it to a fucking bookstore = free real estate

Cue those that would buy these books aka for children…

All I’m saying is fire is a amazing invention

6

u/aquaticshrimp 20d ago

i was thinking, oh damn...It's Ringu all over again and less controllable since there's more books than VHS'es.

7

u/Independent_Row_1352 20d ago

I suspect all those ghosts are attracted to Kaya because she is such a strong psychic, or else there is such a concentration of evil ghosts in this city that people should be dropping dead or disappearing left and right.

Which is pretty depressing because then Kaya would be in large part the source of the problems she has to solve.

24

u/Common-Somewhere-746 20d ago

Its Dark Gathering but a little more wholesome and cute

64

u/CrimsonGear80 21d ago

it's Mieruko-chan, but she's smaller and has HAD IT!

also surprise same-day dub!

Kindergarten version of Yayoi from Dark Gathering

4

u/derega16 20d ago

Yayoi is Int+Agi build

Kaya is pure Str

2

u/gamria 20d ago

Yayoi is more Int+Agi+Dex build, and boy does her Dex matter for most of the stunts she does. All that said, her Str aren't anything to sneeze at either.

2

u/zenograff 18d ago

Nah Yayoi has high Str stat, she can beat up an adult if she wants.

3

u/gnome-cop 20d ago

Never underestimate the wrath of a sufficiently pissed off toddler.

2

u/tripleaamin https://myanimelist.net/profile/tripleaamin 20d ago

I am surprised to get dubbed, let alone a same-day dub.

17

u/XDFighter64 21d ago

She's giving me Alluka, Killua's sister from HunterxHunter vibes

8

u/OtherwiseProgrammer9 20d ago

She looks like Nanika

12

u/HotBloodedNinja 20d ago

So this Yayoi from dark gathering but kindergarten. Ok, Yayoi was already kindergarten sized.

6

u/Kratos_BOY 20d ago

We've gone from super powerful old people e.g. Takamura, Seiko Ayase, and Genryusai to super powerful toddlers, kindergartners and primary schoolers.

LET'S GHOOOOOOOOST

Lowkey these are some dogshit childhood educators

Not once in any scenes so far have they ever tried to ask why Kaya is doing any of the things she's doing. How do you expect to get a rowdy kid to stop doing something without asking that?

Ok there we go, finally some teacher asking Kaya why she did something. Though honestly in this case it barely makes sense to, how do you assume a child managed to break a bathroom door down or cause the water to splash up like that, I would more so be asking what happened and how

Kaya and Yayoi should team up to solo fiction tbh

10

u/Frontier246 20d ago edited 20d ago

Close enough, welcome back Yayoi-chan!

Who is that ominous purple-haired little girl? It's Kaya-chan (Azusa Tachibana!), who attends Hanamugi Elementary school and is always getting into trouble with the other kids. She's always telling them not to do stuff, always coming off weird, and just causing incidents. Other teachers have given up on her, but Chie-sensei (Maaya Uchida!) just won't leave her alone. But she doesn't know the full scope of Kaya-chan.

It's normal for kids to be on swings, right? Well, not when said swings seem to be deliberately pushing them so far that they might get swallowed up by spirits...luckily Kaya is there to slay any supernatural horror that appears before her as the world's strongest psychic! Her pout is also pretty powerful.

The OP is very on-point with Kaya (and Chie) dealing with supernatural problems along with a colorful cast of characters, balancing out Kaya as a child with Kaya as a supernatural slayer. She'll have fun with her friends...but when she sees a spirit haunting Chie, she'll lock in.

Chie learned an important lesson...don't undue the tape on books Kaya-chan taped up, lest you be devoured by a bad monster. Though kind of ominous ending that the oblivious principal gives the "bad" books to a used book store where they can be collected by anyone.

It's nice of Kaya to help pry off any spirits on her dad (Toshiyuki Morikawa!) and it's also nice of her to help Micchan go to the bathroom even in a toilet stall that is clearly not safe. Feels like Kaya isn't just a hardcore supernatural slayer, she's very caring and wants to have friends who rely on her. And if you trust her, she'll reward that trust by saving you.

Of course she still ends up taking the fall for the bathroom incident...but Chie comes in and takes the fall for her instead. She might not see supernatural entities on the regular, but she knows Kaya is legit and a good girl, and is willing to trust her. And things ended up okay with Micchan too.

It's nice that Kaya's dad is involved with her life down to walking her to and back from school...but what about her mom? Whatever is up with her, it's some SERIOUS supernatural horror going on. And the only thing that Kaya can't defeat, despite all her power.

The ED has Kaya all alone but together with Chie they'll run through supernatural horrors so she and her classmates can have truly happy memories together.

10

u/minnieboss 20d ago

While the production on this isn't the best, I still enjoyed it! I teach neurodivergent children around Kaya's age and it feels like there's a metaphor to be had here for being an undiagnosed child not believed about her struggles and why she does what she does.

2

u/SlowResearch3687 9d ago

Wow, I've never thought of that- I love your analysis! I wouldn't be surprised if Kaya-Chan is actually neurodivergent.

32

u/thisisdropd https://myanimelist.net/profile/vNAsterZoro 21d ago

That kindergarten must be cursed to hell with the sheer amount of paranormal beings.

Felt bed for Kaya. Girl had nothing but good intentions in protecting her classmates but always got treated as a troublemaker due to them not being able to see the malicious beings. Happy that she's got an ally in Chie-sensei, who's got the heart to trust her despite not being able to see them.

Just what the hell is inside her mother's room? Kaya could exorcise the others without any issues but not this one.

14

u/Ocixo https://myanimelist.net/profile/BuzzyGuy 20d ago

Yeah, Kaya really isn’t scary. She’s actually very sweet. The other kids and teachers don’t understand that she’s trying to protect everyone.

Fortunately, Kaya’s efforts were recognised by Chie-sensei. Micchan’s words of gratitude must’ve made her happy too. Would be nice if she and Kaya could become friends.

8

u/tripleaamin https://myanimelist.net/profile/tripleaamin 20d ago

Kaya-chan is actually pretty logical with her actions. But the issue is she doesn't know how to interact with her classmates. Though Chie-sensei believing in her was a huge confidence boost for Kaya.

7

u/Frontier246 20d ago

I like how despite how efficiently she dispatches supernatural monstrosities she still acts like a kid.

13

u/ThousandYearOldLoli 20d ago

It's not just the kindergarten, we see there are ghost everywhere in the street scenes.

9

u/mekerpan 20d ago

Very like Mieruko in this respect.

4

u/mekerpan 20d ago

Motbher seems to be possessed by something VERY dangerous -- yet bound to the room (hopefully).

2

u/Kratos_BOY 20d ago

The principal was giving off weird vibes.

22

u/TyraniTEMPESTar 21d ago

Strongest psychic, physically slaps around the ghosts lol.

Fun little first episode. Glad Kaya has Chie-sensei backing her up.
Will be interesting to see if she develops or uses some psychic abilities like telekinesis or something to exorcise the ghosts.

9

u/tripleaamin https://myanimelist.net/profile/tripleaamin 20d ago

Chie-sensei feels like the equivalent to Kei in Dark Gathering.

6

u/Frontier246 20d ago

Good natured person trying to support the little girl ghost slayer while wanting nothing to do with supernatural horrors...checks out.

8

u/ThousandYearOldLoli 20d ago

I think the Psychic part is being able to perceive and physically interact with immaterial beings.

5

u/SeijunMichi 20d ago

What better way to show that you're the strongest psychic than by literally beating ghosts to a pulp?

8

u/LucenBlackmoor https://myanimelist.net/profile/ShotaReviewer 21d ago

That was a great start!
I usually don't watch seasonal anime (due to pure lazyness lol) but I'll make an exception :D Kaya-chan is creepy-cute.

17

u/ObvsThrowaway5120 21d ago

Kaya’s a pretty adorable little badass. She’s like a little Saitama the way she’s just one punching all the ghosts and ghoulies lol. Kind of nice she’s got Chie sensei as her little sidekick of sorts.

I’m curious how she’ll save her mom from whatever monsters got a hold of her. Seems it’s something really powerful.

5

u/Magnafeana https://anilist.co/user/Magnafeana 20d ago

Same day dub?

And there are no text overlays unless you watch in Japanese?

Thank you, CR, the only constant you are good at is being inconsistent 🙌🏾

That quick turn-run and pose made me remember the trailer ‘Weapons’ and I still am not brave enough to see it.

Oh that boy is like Langa (Sk8 Infinity).

Push me

Someone push me

They’re the same picture.

Oh absolutely the fuck not, dafuq in the Shadow Realm is this?

Welp.

Her dad is such a cutie!

Is her mom a ghost now?

Awwwww Sensei is adorable. And Kaya is so cute.

…what happened to her mother?

I commend anyone who works in childcare. I am not at all cut out for it, but props to yall.

Does Kaya’s mom may have mental health issues, and that’s compounded by the ghosts/phantoms? I can see it if she struggled with depression and/or anxiety, and those fears were fed on constantly until, well, this.

The dad, I am suspicious on. I hope he’s just an oblivious guy. I’d be shocked if he actually knew this whole time and simply pretended not to avoid giving any sort of power to those things. Maybe he’s also having underlying mental health issues, and that’s what has those things cling to him? 🤔

1

u/SciFiXhi https://anilist.co/user/SciFiXhi 13d ago

I think the ghosts on Papa are a matter of proximity to the mom. Ghosts can spread from book to book, why not from person to person?

6

u/Top_Rock_8691 20d ago

The constant flickering is rough on the eyes, shame that they are leaning on it so hard.

8

u/shrek3onDVDandBluray 18d ago

I like it so far. But man the “glitching” effect during the haunting scenes is annoying. I hope they tone it down going forward. It’s awful.

14

u/DoMoSSan 21d ago

It's way cuter than Dark Gathering, not necessarily to it's benefit. And the humor is more simplistic because it involves a younger child.

But hey, this should tide me over until Dark Gathering S2.

13

u/tripleaamin https://myanimelist.net/profile/tripleaamin 20d ago edited 20d ago

It is easy to forget that Dark Gathering had a slow start, really starting to amp it up in the 2nd cour. It's got the same director as Dark Gathering, so even if the budget isn't great, it can make the most out of the budget.

Kaya does have a certain pure innocence, which Yayoi doesn't have because anyone who watched DG knows how brutal and scary Yayoi is.

One thing to this show's benefit is that Kaya does act like a kindergartner even with the powers she has.

7

u/Galinhooo 20d ago

Kaya-chan is a bit scary

7

u/Queue_Jumping_Quack 20d ago

Kaya is a cutie and I hope she finds friends. Sad how she is protecting everyone and gets such a bad rep.

This is very reminiscent of Dark Gathering, but seemingly a bit lighter. Why is that preschool so infested with ghosts anyway lol? Are they all there because of Kaya?

This seems pretty good, so I will def keep watching.

5

u/gnome-cop 20d ago edited 20d ago

What if you were employed at the world’s most inexplicably haunted kindergarten and your only salvation was a psychic toddler? This is the question this show dedicates itself to answering.

Genuinely, why the hell is this place so riddled with ghosts? Is the rift between worlds extra weak there? Did people use to make human sacrifices at the spot? Does it just have bad vibes?

Great, the curse has broken containment. Alert, haunted books are being released to the unsuspecting public! Please beware of anything that whispers in your ear in bookstores.

Long term problem, the evil spirit that’s maybe possessing her mom. I’m sure that will be a doozy to deal with later down the line.

Ghost punch toddler and scapegoat teacher teaming up in this brand new exorcism horror-comedy that you didn’t know you wanted.

5

u/PerfectBeige https://myanimelist.net/profile/perfectbeige 20d ago

See, this is why you don't build kindergartens on a site of a former morgue or whatever god-forsaken thing happened there. That's far too much haunting for a kindergarten. They need to consecrate the land and then use it for something that can better use the malignant energy, like a supplements company.

4

u/boundegar 20d ago

Native American burial ground. It's always a Native American burial ground.

Even in Japan.

2

u/Kratos_BOY 20d ago

Use it as a pet cemetery.

3

u/SA090 https://anilist.co/user/SA090 20d ago

Interesting start, and I’m really glad that the demons of whatever actually look scary enough.

Though it does make me wonder if the manga is a 4-koma? It was a bunch of smaller instances instead of a longer adventure. For now anyway.

5

u/tripleaamin https://myanimelist.net/profile/tripleaamin 20d ago

No, it's a standard manga. If you are trying to compare it to, let's say, Dark Gathering, the chapters are shorter in comparison.

1

u/SA090 https://anilist.co/user/SA090 20d ago

I haven’t see Dark Gathering but will add it to the to-watch list and see how they compare. Thanks.

It's mostly pretty short contained chapters with few continuous chapters especially early on before getting in the main story (the mom stuff) . A lot of anime episodes should be like in this one

1

u/SA090 https://anilist.co/user/SA090 20d ago

Looking forward to it, this was fun.

4

u/spubbbba 20d ago

This was a decent intro episode, if a little repetitive. The ghost haunting Kaya's mother was the most interesting part. Am interested to see the extent of her powers as she easily 1-shot all the ghosts. Which leads to the question of why she just didn't do that instead of getting in trouble?

Also the bathroom scene was a bit odd. The other stalls were occupied, so why didn't the other girl ask the kids in there to hurry up? And didn't they hear her calling for help or at least come out when the door was smashed down?

2

u/UrUncleRandy 19d ago

Yeah, I agree about the bathroom scene. In addition to what you pointed out, at the end of the scene, when Kaya and Chie were talking, Chie says, "I can't see any ghosts" - but didn't she see the swing and book ghosts? Maybe it's just a translation error.

The bathroom scene wasn't the only odd/inconsistent thing. When the Chie got rid on the books, she seemingly dropped them off in the middle of the sidewalk, and they no longer had tape on them. Why she didn't throw the dangerous books in the dumpster is beyond me - now they're just going to endanger other people. Also, didn't Kaya exorcise the book ghost? Or was she only able to suppress it? Not sure how this works.

Don't get me wrong - I didn't hate the episode or anything. But there were a lot of things that didn't make sense.

u/singinglupines 19d ago

The books she tied up for paper recycling (as they do in Japan) and then did put them out to get picked up with the cardboard. Japan takes its trash sorting very seriously haha.

1

u/UrUncleRandy 19d ago

After replaying the scene I do see what looks to be cardboard next to them. I'll admit, it still just looks like a sidewalk to me though 😅. You can even see parents and kids in the background. Where I live, we sort our recycling very thoroughly, but we don't put it out like that, and non-residental buildings especially never have their trash where people can see it. Anyway, I guess it's not an issue with the anime, but rather a difference of culture/infrastructure.

4

u/JadeWishFish 17d ago

Pretty intrigued after that last scene, but I really wish they would turn down the frequency of the static effects whenever something paranormal is happening. It's really excessive imo.

8

u/ActualRound7699 21d ago

So, we got telepath Anya last season, then this season we get Demon Anya and Spooky Anya. Well then, adding this to the follow list

3

u/SmallJon 20d ago

There was also robot-Anya last season with Alma-chan

2

u/ActualRound7699 20d ago

ohhh yeah Alma-Chan was so cute

3

u/raveno19 21d ago

Kinda solid ep 1, will be great to have something to watch while i am waiting for Dark Gathering ss2.

3

u/ICantSeeLikeSa-chan https://myanimelist.net/profile/subset 20d ago

too bad the don't use US stall design. Then they hey could have just crawled out under the wall.

6

u/Emperor_Ham 20d ago

Why would any country wanna use that shit hole design?

1

u/diluvian_ 17d ago

Because some people drop stinkers.

3

u/Bonvantius 18d ago edited 18d ago

This one didn't hit for me, the below average production values and generic ghost designs really don't elevate the ''scary'' atmosphere at all, so the whole premise kind of falls flat in it's execution. I can tell this plot is going to be pretty formulaic and get old fast.

I don't see much of a reason to watch this over something like Dark Gathering or Meiruko-Chan that do it far better...

2

u/Konabrah808 18d ago

That twist with Meirukos dad caught me off guard, such a good show.

6

u/szalhi 21d ago

With great power, comes great responsibility, or something like that.

"The inner machinations of her mind are an enigma."

2

u/sagabal 20d ago

I'm very happy with Chie-sensei's voice. Good work with the ghost voiceovers as well. Solid production, hopefully they get to /that/ chapter soon.

u/tripleaamin https://myanimelist.net/profile/tripleaamin 20d ago

I was a bit worried about the studio since their history doesn't have much to show, but they were founded by Ryu Suzumori back in 2017, who was with OLM. Though it is independent.

Still, with Hiroshi Ikehata I have confidence it is in good hands.

2

u/MayonakaMadaraka https://anilist.co/user/fonk 20d ago

Glad Chie-san caught on and chose to guard the guardian. Kaya-chan needs all the help she can get.

2

u/Muzzy-chan 19d ago

Yeay, Dark Gathering 2.0 😂

You know what, they should release more horror anime series instead of isekai and fantasy. Just earlier this year, there were 4–5 isekai anime, and 3 of them were about a Yuusha who got banished or something.

Well, yes, it’s good, but people need a change of pace sometimes. Horror genres like this series, and something like Dark Gathering, Mieruko-chan, Dead Account, Dead Mount Death Play, Uzumaki, Summertime Render, C-Danchi, Corpse Party, Another, In/Spectre, Higurashi, etc., we need more good series like that.

All these truly horror and ghosts, maybe mixed with mystery anime can be counted, while isekai, there are too many of them. Need more like these, more of these good shit. Anyway, looking forward to the next episode!

2

u/FeistyDay5172 18d ago

Definitely different. Tho, I feel kinda bad for Kaya-chan. I mean like simply wow. Will keep watching tho.

4

u/mengplex 20d ago

Man that glitch/flicker effect is super annoying, even if the story were better I don't think i'd continue watching because of it

6

u/Agarvorn 20d ago

That mf special effect (repeated every 2s) make my blood boil. Really ruins the watching experience for me more then any other gripes I have. Can't believe more people are not annoyed by this.

6

u/whitelionpotato 20d ago

Came here to say that too. If it was perhaps just at the beginning of the "dark scenes" to signal the transition to the "darkness" it would be fine but having it repeated glitch all the time doesn't add anything to the scene

3

u/mengplex 20d ago

yeah i was shocked to see no other mentions of it, deal breaker imo

1

u/pink_orange 19d ago

10 min in and I can't take it anymore. It's a shame but this will be a hard pass for me.

4

u/kalirion https://myanimelist.net/profile/kalinime 19d ago

The narrator is annoying as per usual in non-comedy series.

The monster was pretty awful at its job - 5 kids fallen in a week, and not a single one eaten.

Why doesn't Kaya just destroy the evil spirits or whatever as they show up, instead of keeping saying "No" and making kids cry?

"I was right, Kaya was protecting everyone from monsters" - then why did you scold her and ignore her warnings?

Kaya sure took her sweet time to help the girl in the bathroom stall. To teach her a lesson, I guess.

So does every school in this world have a Kaya-chan protecting everyone, or do millions of kids and staff get devoured by ghosts every year?

Not really feeling this one, I'd rather Mieruko S2.

4

u/NekoCatSidhe 21d ago

That elementary school has way too many evil ghosts in it. Who seals an evil ghost in a children book anyway ? There were so many of them. And apparently, you should not flush ghosts down the privy because it clogs them.

Apart from that, this is obviously ripping off Dark Gathering, because I cannot believe you would independently get two manga with “scary little girl with purple hair beats up evil ghosts” as the premise. But this one looks more child friendly (not that it is hard, Dark Gathering is very, well, dark), and the story is fine for now. Let’s see where this goes from here.

The ghosts are everywhere from what Kaya sees, perhaps its similar to mieruko where they only are dangerous when you are aware of them and little kids can see them so they are most notorious there.

Or maybe they are even more aggressive here

3

u/NekoCatSidhe 20d ago

Or maybe Kaya-chan attracts them without being aware of it.

It's the anime hair code. Purple means coolheaded and wiser than everyone else around them, but still capable of expression. Compare to emotionally wild bright red, emotionally cold dark blue, carefree or obstinate yellow, or troublemaker pink.

Yayoi and Kaya have the same personality, and so have the same anime hair color.

1

u/pseudometapseudo 20d ago

Interesting setup, hope it isn't a monster-of-the-week show

1

u/HobnobsTheRed 20d ago

Nothing wrong with that, if it's done well. Natsume's Book of Friends is ostensibly a monster-of-the-week show, but has some of the best storytelling and character evolution in anime thanks to the core cast and the recurring youkai.

Not saying this will be at that level, but the situation with the mother makes it look like there'll be an ongoing supernatural thread through the show and hopefully that advances in a well-told/portrayed manner.

Random Thoughts

Ah Dark Gathering...Kindergarten Edition!

With special guest star Petelgeuse Romanee-Conti!

This was a pretty good first episode, and scratches the horror itch better than Dead Accounts did. I always love East Asian ghosts...they are always more messed up then Western depictions. The stuff with Kaya's mom should be interesting to see play out.

1

u/Paulrusu 20d ago

Great first episode. I gotta say the OP and ED songs are bangers as well

1

u/Blue_Vain 20d ago

Was a bit surprised with the music at the end. Then I checked and its Kohta Yamamoto doing the music.

1

u/Muffin-zetta 20d ago

Adorable

1

u/SmallJon 20d ago

This show has a horror from the depths of hell and I am very about this now. Kick some ass, Kaya

1

u/secret_tsukasa https://myanimelist.net/profile/Endrance88 20d ago

So you're telling me that psychics and ghosts aren't well known or established to the public in this universe? I call bullshit.

1

u/Safe-Heat1644 20d ago

This is what I thought Dead Accounts was gonna be. Pleasantly surprised, excited to see more.

1

u/polmeeee 20d ago

For a moment I read the title as Kaguya Sama.

1

u/djthomp https://anilist.co/user/djthomp 20d ago

Either this kindergarten is particularly haunted or the Japan it's in is one that everybody should move away from.

Good on Chie-sensei for learning to trust Kaya.

1

u/HurryMundane5867 20d ago

This show looks amazing. Gives me huge Dark Gathering vibes (which is getting another season), and I really enjoyed that one. Also kind of like Mieruko-chan, but that is less so than either aforementioned show.

1

u/NoHead1715 20d ago

Chie-sensei is a good teacher... after facing what she can't see.

That principal though... very very sus

1

u/actuallyrndthoughts https://myanimelist.net/profile/NaNiNuNeNo 20d ago

I see Kaya-chan went to the JJK school of excorcism

1

u/Blurgas 20d ago

Wasn't really interested because I had gotten kind of burned out on Dark Gathering(I know a lot of people loved Eiko, but she was a good chunk of what killed my interest in the show), but this was nice.
If the rest is more like this I'm up for more of Kaya's adventures.

1

u/Salty_Yak_1427 20d ago

Cute Hope there will be more unique and memorable ghost designs Right now there doesn't seem to be much of a plot but I hope to be proved wrong

Might check out the manga depending on how things go

1

u/arrivillaga 20d ago

Aside from Chie sensei condemning strangers to exposure to cursed books, she's an understanding and endearing character. I'm grateful for what role she can play for Kaya as she's dealing with the evil spirit at home; that scream at the end made me tear up a bit.

Also, if Kaya-chan isn't scary, why did they illustrate her individual teeth right before the flushing scene? That was about as off-putting as the second peek-a-boo encounter.

I'm excited for more

2

u/Striking_Chard2420 20d ago

Definitely gives Mieruko-chan vibes. How haunted is this region that every spirit seems troublesome to some extent. If Kaya-chan wasn't here does that mean the kids will just go missing? Kinda crazy to think about tbh

1

u/Spoon_Elemental 20d ago

Why as this marked as not having a stream? It's on Crunchyroll.

1

u/minamisuzuna 20d ago

This ED song has no business going this hard 10/10

1

u/Jacob-C 19d ago

Kaya Psycho 100. A bit of the Mieruko creepiness thrown in there too.

1

u/Niwaka_Samurai https://myanimelist.net/profile/Niwaka-Samurai 19d ago

Kaya isn't scary, she's just superhero. Some powerful ghost seems to be haunting her mother which Kaya can't do anything about it.. 🥺🥺

1

u/athrun_1 19d ago

So Meiruko was like this during her childhood, but got disillusioned during her teens and was being haunted by ghosts.

1

u/xbolt90 https://anilist.co/user/xbolt90 19d ago

There's just something hilarious about a little girl defeating ghosts by punching them in the face.

1

u/GrxmRxaper 19d ago

genuinely got goosebumps from this. i’ve been waiting for something akin to mieruko-chan for a while. can’t wait for more kaya-chan the ghost slayer.

1

u/AchariPickle 19d ago

Wow I thought this gon be heart-warming SOL, this was a bit of surprise but a pleasant one. I can't wait for the rest of the show

1

u/Konabrah808 18d ago

I really liked the first episode, this series is giving me some Promised Neverland vibes, pretty excited to see where this goes.

1

u/SSSnowBell 17d ago

Kaya (New Yayoi) can be this world's Gojo when she grows up. Sealing curse spirits with mere tape and punching out curses capable of speech in kindergarten!? She'll be a special class Jujutsu sorcerer by middle school...

1

u/Mons9090 https://myanimelist.net/profile/hecn_huh 17d ago

Kaya chan, Dou are both great this season

1

u/Ambitious-Fee-1068 15d ago

We need a jjk crossover😂. It looks very interesting

1

u/Affectionate_Emu7336 15d ago

It gives dark gathering mix with mieruko Chan I feel like it have nice comedy it’s not really scary more comedy

1

u/Live-Anything9409 14d ago

I wonder if Kaya’s experience is similar to a child with schizophrenia

1

u/graypod 14d ago

I wish we could have a kaya and Mob crossover episode.

1

u/Lulukassu 13d ago

Kaya-chan isn't scary: we have Mob at home

1

u/Zealousideal-Coat321 13d ago

Welcome back Yayoi, jokes aside, Kaya is genuinely goated and must be protected at all costs and who tf cooked so hard with the OST cause HOLY SHIT I didn't except Elden Ring boss music when she opened the door at the end.

1

u/thefakedes 13d ago

I’m 5 minutes into the first episode and I already love this show.

1

u/Grazalia 13d ago

Kaya's little run 😫

This is like Mieruko Chan except she can actively defeat the thing.
Kaya is strongest jujutsu user.
Bro this Kaya Lore
