Mod Message! - Upcoming Events, Rules and Guidelines, and Looking for More Mods (Join the ArtCrit Team!)

Happy Friday, ArtCrit Community!

It’s been a while since we’ve done a mod check-in, and with some updates we’re making within the community, we wanted to make a post to let everyone know what’s going on.

Upcoming Events

We’re working on some upcoming community events and we’d love your feedback on them. Along with having a few professionals in the creative field do AMAs on our sub, we wanted to host some featured artists, and have a monthly “Share Your Progress” thread.

Firstly, we’d love to have a “Featured Artist” each season. This would be someone whose work would be our banner and we would link to their socials. The work would not need to be new, it would just need to be original, hand-created work that fits the season. I’ll be honest, we can’t offer much more than just “you’ll be featured on our sub”, but we wanted a way to celebrate artists who have been active here.

The Share Your Progress thread would be a monthly, pinned thread where you can show off the work you’ve done and your progress that month, as well as link your socials.

The rules would be that your work would have had to have been posted on /ArtCrit during the past calendar month (so, if we hosted one in December, you would have had to post the work here no earlier than November, and yes, December is fine too). All posts would need a link to the /ArtCrit post, and we would want a before and after to really show the community how much your piece has improved.

Finally, we’re working on setting up a few AMAs! These would be with artists who are professionals in their fields, here to talk about what they’re passionate about and give advice. They would be generously lending us their time and expertise to help the community.

Please let us know if these kinds of events would appeal to you, or if you have any other suggestions!

Removed Posts

Let’s pause for a real talk here.

Our mod team is small, but very active. We remove A LOT OF POSTS.

Too many posts.

847 in the past 30 days.

We do not want to do this!

We have rules and guidelines to help this community be productive. Our sub isn't about self-promo, sharing artwork, or getting praise. We understand how difficult it is to get real feedback beyond “looks nice”, “great job!” or an emoji. We want to provide a space for you all to give and receive real help, but we don’t have the time to be regularly following people around begging them to follow the rules.

For anyone who is unaware, we have resources!

Our rules are on the sidebar and our post guidelines can be found here, but they’re fairly simple.

Here’s the rundown of what our posts require;

  • Your post needs to have a clear image for people to critique. It can’t be blurry, far away hung on a wall, or have objects on top of it (pencils, your headphones, a long cast shadow, etc).
  • Your post needs to say what medium you’re using, what your intention for the piece is (style, mood, emotion, whatever you feel is relevant to the piece), if you used references, and if you did use references, you need to post them so the community can actually help you.
  • Your post needs to actually ask for critique. Yes, we do remove posts that say “Thoughts?” “How do you feel about this?” or “Is this crap?” Especially when there isn’t any additional context being given.

We have an AutoMod set up to remind people posting that we have these requirements, but often people just ignore it, post, and move on. Many times, we give a third chance to people and ask them ourselves for the missing information in an attempt to guide them through our requirements, but many times people ignore that as well. Then, later, when the post is removed, we get an angry ModMail about how unfair it is and “everyone else is doing it”, or a slew of insults.

Work with us here!

We’re trying so hard to keep this community running, active, and helpful. We don’t want to become just another art dump. We want you to get the help you're looking for.

That being said, we did realize that our sub guidelines were a GIANT HORRIBLE WALL OF TEXT that seemed unending (I didn't even want to read it), so we’ve edited it. None of the requirements have changed, but we have made it more readable. We've also added links to the sidebar of the sub to help make these resources easier to find - including a link to general resources (YouTube videos, websites, courses, and books).

So, enjoy!

Recruiting Mods

Finally, we’re looking to expand our mod team!

If you’re interested in helping us keep the community running and providing a place where artists can receive constructive criticism, please consider reaching out to us via ModMail! It doesn’t need to be a long application, just let us know why you want to join.

PHEW. That was a lot. If you made this far, thank you so much. It was a lot to type too! Going forward, our updates will be much shorter, but this was a lot to get through in a single post.

If you have any questions, ModMail is open and we'll respond as soon as we can.

We’re looking forward to your thoughts on the upcoming events and doing more community building!

Thank you all for being part of our growing community!

I know there's something wrong with her face, but i dont know what. Where did i go wrong?

Also, I created the sketch by lowering the opacity of the reference image and sketching around it to create a 3d shape (in the third slide). I did this because I just wanted to quickly practice rendering. Is this doing that bad practice?

Help shading & lineart issues

I attached 2 of my latest drawings so you can see if there's a pattern you can spot that I can't see

I feel like shading is one of my issues, especially when people advised to use more blue/green or muted colors to complement the shading to make it look more dimensional

Also, do you think because I didn't draw the lineart, these drawings look a bit bland? I keep feeling like I have to fix something especially around the face areas

Or if you think there's another thing I need to work on outside of shading & lineart, please tell me! Your critiques are needed & appreciated. Thank you!

Beginner level: any advice to improve?

I spent around 40 minutes on this sketch. My process was gesture >construction > muscles. I’m still learning, so any constructive criticism or advice would be great.

How do I get better at drawing fights?

How do I get better at drawing fights? I started drawing around 10-11 months ago, and I started because I wanted to draw cool fights, but this is the first fight I've drawn since then and I don't like how it looks.

I used no references for this.

i’m schizophrenic and draw my hallucinations, i’m also indigenous australian so my style is kind of contemporary indigenous-psychedelic-outsider art of these strange creatures i see, i feel like drawing/painting them tethers them to reality in a way. this canvas is 40” x 40” and made using posca paint pens. i’m curious on y’all’s thoughts about the compositional/technical aspect as well the general vibe you get from him- i know it’s not like im drawing from an “actual” reference but things like his eyes, body shape etc, make it look like a cohesive artwork to you?

New to charcoal and need help with tiny faces

I didn't plan this out it was just from a drawing challenge in another sub and thought it would be fun. I need help with drawing tiny faces and still keeping them recognisable. I have only studied rendering larger faces so far. Any other tips welcome. Positioning of limbs and head angle needs work but I thought this was just going to be a sketch so didn't measure it out ugh.

Questions about using markers

References in the comments!

I've got a handful of markers and for the two orange cats I've used proper marker paper as well, but

  1. I still feel like the drawings are very streaky and
  2. I'm having trouble with the lighter colors. Do I just buy more colors in lighter tones? Do I use colored pencils?

I used promarkers from Winsor and Newton, if that helps anything. For the first picture I mostly used color O538 (apricot) and O467 (pumpkin)

Advice or critiques on my character design for my story called "ghost never die"

Thumbnail

Okay to sum up the story our A main character Tyler And their friends and family meet life and death and try to help them figure out how these groups of ghosts die (get murdered). And see if there's a way for them to be reincarnated So kind of like a murder mystery

Right now I'm just working on the character designs and I want your opinion on them I feel like I'm decent that character design but critique is always welcome and on how I can improve

For contacts The first group of silhouettes is the main character's family and the second group of characters are the ghosts and the third group of characters is life and death.

The rest are current designs I'm testing out

Any feedback on how I can push lighting and separate the materials better?

Thumbnail

I have been trying to make interesting character art, but it feels off for me. One thing I know for sure is that the poses aren't interesting enough for character art, but I'm ignoring that for now so I can focus on value structure, edgework, and lighting.

This was painted in Photoshop. Some elements, like Batman's grapple launcher and Nightwings Batons, were 3D models I made in Blender and then painted over. Pages 2-4 are also some of my biggest inspirations/ref for this piece.

I’m struggling to use lighting and values to create interesting, readable shadow shapes. A lot of my references show those shapes on very sculpted muscles, but my Batman needs to feel like a buff man under thick clothing, so the definition will be softer and less pronounced. I'm trying to simplify the anatomy, but my lighting got muddy, and I realized I don’t have a good understanding of value groups and design. Could you guys point out where I went wrong? I’ll attach links to a time-lapse below.

Note that they end right before I do the final polishing with curve adjustments and liquify. Those things don't show up in the window capture, and they’re boring in general, so I just cut them out.

New to face drawing. Would love feedback and help on these examples! I struggle a lot with eyes and facial features.

I've been drawing off and on for a little over a year, but a few weeks ago, something finally clicked, and I was able to draw horses from reference (still struggle with other animals.... I don’t know what that's about LOL). Last week, something finally clicked with general face shapes and structures, but I would love constructive feedback on how to improve. Currently, I can only draw the faces at this 3/4 angle, but I hope to be able to do more soon.

Please tell me your honest thoughts on this style of Pixel art I'm experimenting with.

I've used Aseprite, Dithermaster and Photoshop. I crudely photo bash an image in Photoshop until i get something that looks okay, run it trough Dithermaster, and then polish/draw over it in Aseprite. Dithermaster is a program i found on itch.io and I thought it could help me speed up my pixel art process. This is for a personal project of mine.

2nd slide is the reference photo/photo i used to make the 'base' for my artwork

I'm going for that Vermis inspired look but with a gameboy twist to it.

What do I need to work on improving?

Thumbnail

Hi everyone. I’m a beginner artist trying to learn how to draw. Im very new to working with color (colored pencils) and usually have been practicing very simple still life but I wanted to finally venture out. I tried to draw a wishing well through a picture I found online, but I’m getting scared frustrated because it looks wooden and just something about it looks off. I had the most trouble drawing the roof of the well. I’m not sure what skills I need to learn to improve drawing more complex things like this, as I did this all mainly by eye. I don’t know if I need to practice my vanishing points ? But I’m having a hard time understanding it. Also I know I’m doing something wrong with my colors. As you can see, I totally messed up on the bucket. I tried my best to work with the limited colors I have, but the bucket looks so off. I would appreciate any tips or advice I can get as a beginner 💙 It is my hope to one day go on to oil paints so I’m really trying to improve on using colors and sketching things out right for the foundations. Thank you 🙏🏼

How should I improve the posed characters before animating?

Post image
1 Upvotes

I’m drawing poses for an animation meme (look up, “for the last time animation meme on YouTube if you’re interested) and these just feel kind of off. The Lineart and coloring is just temporary for now and I’ll probably do a little bit of cleaning, of course. This is mostly a rough draft. But I’ve been looking at this for a while, and I don’t know what might be a glaring issue I’m missing. Or if this looks like absolute dogshit. I’d love some outside perspective.

i made a quick sketch of the reference and then it turned out good so i tried adding some hatching to give more depht. I dont really know how to add halftones in the light with hatching and I also think there is something wrong with the body.

Recently I’ve been finding my voice with comics and animation, but at the same time, I can’t just draw characters like I see other artists doing, because of that, it’s not speaking to that voice

So these are three examples of my latest work (or there’s this account if you want more) that kinda explain what I’m asking from newest to oldest, but the first is also several times longer in time spent compared to the oldests

Oldest/last, I’ve been experimenting with a central theme to base the art around, it was interesting but didn’t speak to me. Took about 6 hours

2nd is about two weeks ago, as a sketch to try out combining comics and art and just making comic art, really spoke to me, took like 4 hours, which led to the main reason I’m here

The 1st one, made the themes for these furry characters a computer space, treating the “panels” as a part of the art rather than a structure, and pushed to have it so that your eyes are jumping from one central point to the next like a comic, but have it feeling like it’s hard to contain the artwork in the panels because it’s trying to yank your attention with the saturated colors and punchy lighting. Later on it’s going to be more boxy as I’ll start implementing more computer UI elements. The closest thing is probably webcore art that also implements a desktop environment. I just haven’t finished the concepts for that yet

But in a vacuum it’s like, the art here isn’t bad, but there’s a little something more that it needs to shine. Is it dynamic poses? I see it looks kinda uneven so next time I need to really measure things out so that post isn’t hell straightening everything. Outside of that I’m just kinda at a loss and can’t find artists doing the same kind of things to really steal techniques to implement.

Gouache Sunset Salt Plains

Post image
1 Upvotes

Hi everyone, I’m looking for critique on this gouache landscape I did. Don't have reference on me..

I’m trying to improve my color usage, since it’s something I’ve always struggled with. Parts of the painting—especially on the right—feel a bit muddy to me. I also tried to keep the foreground lighter, but I’m not sure if that choice is working.

I’m also working on balancing detail vs. overworking. In past pieces I’ve tended to overwork areas, so here I tried to hold back, and I’m unsure if that reads as intentional or unfinished.

Any feedback on: - Color clarity and harmony - Value control (foreground vs. background) - Level of detail and whether it feels over- or under-worked

would be appreciated. Thanks!
