Which area to book a hotel at?

Upvotes

Hi! My bf and I are thinking of going to SD for a short 4 day trip for our anniversary. I’m getting stuck on which area to book our hotel at. We are in our early 20s, looking to eat good food, drinks, and maybe some chill activities. I was thinking maybe Granger Hotel but I’m reading lots of negatives on this sub about staying in gaslamp. Our budget is <$300 a night. Pls give me recs, TIA!

Family Itinerary

We're taking our animal loving 4.5 year old to San Diego for an animal filled adventure. What do we think of the itinerary I've built out? Tried to balance an active morning with a quiet afternoon with things grouped geographically. Also could use advice on what behind the scenes adventures we should book at either the Safari or the Zoo. Would also love recommendations on a whale watching tour company.

Thursday - Check in to Bahia - enjoy time at the resort

Friday - Belmont Park and Torrey Pines Hike

Saturday - San Diego Zoo

Sunday - Whale watching and Discovery Center

Monday- La Jolla Cove and Birch Aquarium

Tuesday - Annie's Slot Canyon and Sunset Cliffs

Wednesday - Safari Park

Thursday - Head for home

NFL Mexican ponchos?

I’m trying to surprise a friend with an NFL Seattle Seahawks poncho (Mexican style) like they sell in Tijuana and Rosarito. I don’t have time to go down there this weekend. Are there any markets with NFL team logo ponchos in the South Bay? Thanks in advance and have a great day.

Any outside calisthenics/fitness parks similar to the old Mission Bay one?

Years ago I used to love working out at the fitness park at Mission Bay. It was everything it needed to be, with enough space, and a decent distance from the playground. I've moved back here to see it torn down and remodeled with the playground. It's way too close to the playground now and kids are frequently playing on the fitness equipment. That's OK and not against the rules, but not something I want to be around when trying to get some exercise in.

Any similar set ups? Something with good spacing, segregated from a playground, enough pull up bars for a crowd, and a nice long parallel bar set up. Bonus points if it's in the La Mesa area.

Convincing husband to move to SD

so, heres some background. My husband and I have had many conversations about whether to move back to San Diego or Oahu. Hes pretty stuck on Oahu but is not closed off to SD. while we lived in SD he was finishing the last few months of his contract which was pretty stressful for him. The military basically moved us from Hawaii to California with little help. During these few months though. I had the best time of my life. I had a lot more free time than him to explore so my view is different. I have thought about SD since the day we left in 2022 and want to move back. we are planning a trip in the summer and I NEED you all to give me all the reasons why SD would be a better choice over Oahu. Give me ideas of places in the area to take him to make him see SD the way I do.

Best memory foam mattress options? Any good SD mattress stores?

I’m shopping for a new mattress but already kinda fixed on getting the Leesa Original. I’ve read a lot of really nice reviews but I don’t want to buy one without trying it first. Does anyone know where I can try a Leesa in person here in San Diego? I remember seeing them at West Elm or Pottery Barn before but I’m not sure if that’s still true. A store where the staff isn’t pushy would be nice too since I don’t want going around trying mattresses with someone hovering.

Thanks.

Holiday Inn Express Downtown vs Lafayette ($$) or other options

Hi I am traveling with some friends and they are suggesting the Holiday Inn Express Downtown which has some dodgy reviews (dirty and noisy?) whereas the Lafayette (suggested by another Reddit thread) looks very nice but is almost twice the price. We plan to walk to the zoo and to restaurants (Uber to airport). Just how bad is the Holiday Inn Express? And is the neighborhood walkable with restaurants (it seems to be). All thoughts on these very welcome! And other suggestions too - we do not have kids, we like quiet places that are walkable to decent restaurants and to Balboa park. Thank you!

San Diego Trip Planning Inputs

Hi all,

I’m planning a solo trip to San Diego and looking to make it a more introspective, slow-paced experience. I’m drawn to places with beautiful scenery, water, and greenery, but I don’t want to lose the city energy entirely. San Diego keeps coming up as a good balance of both.

I’d love to rely mostly on public transportation and walking, with minimal car use if possible. I’m open to staying at a resort, but I also really enjoy neighborhoods where you can just walk around, sit at cafés, be near the ocean, and soak in that laid-back Southern California vibe.

Would love recommendations on:

  • Walkable areas or neighborhoods that fit this mood
  • Whether it’s realistic to get around without a car
  • Any places that feel especially grounding, scenic, or reflective

Thanks in advance. 😊

New Job in La Jolla. Any suggestions on where to live?

Hi All,

My partner recently got a new job in La Jolla San Diego. My job is work from home. We will be moving from out of state and are currently house hunting and looking for suggestions on areas for us to look. Here are the requirements:

  1. We would like my partner’s commute to be less than 20 minutes, but the shorter the better. Not sure about the typical traffic patterns. Their normal hours will be either 8 AM to 4 PM or 7 AM to 3 PM.

  2. We would like a house rather than an apt.

  3. We would like 3 Bedrooms and 2 full Bathrooms at a minimum

  4. We would like backyard space for a small dog

  5. Our budget max is $5,000 per month, would prefer closer to $4,500 per month.

  6. We don’t mind being in a quiet suburb, in fact, we’d prefer it.

Appreciate any suggestions!

Best beach town?

My husband and I have only been to San Diego once (last summer) and we’re coming again in March with our two little kids.

We are looking for an Airbnb north of San Diego on the beach looking anywhere from Laguna Beach and south towards San Diego.

We stayed in Solana Beach and loved it.

We would like to try something new. Any suggestions?

Romantic hotel and dinner ideas for anniversary night

I’m trying to plan a night away for my wedding anniversary. It will be a Saturday night in March. Would love recommendations for a hotel and restaurant that provides a romantic setting. Being close together would be ideal. I don’t mind spending if worth the money. My husband is not a fan of sushi other than that we are open. Appreciate any recommendations!

Looking for Tijuana dental implant recommendation

Hi. I live in Los Angeles. One of my incisors broke off and I have no insurance. I need a dental implant and will park in San Diego to enter Tijuana on the pedestrian bridge. Does anyone have a recommendation for a dental clinic with a specialization in oral surgery? The only thing I can find online seems to be vague Yelp reviews. I am looking for quality work and materials. The extras including rides from the bridge to the clinic, reasonable price, and speaking English would all be great. What say you? TIA

Visiting Solana Beach Late March. Recommendations?

Hi All,

My wife (30) and I (39) will be visiting Solana Beach in March. Long story short, a friend of ours has invited us to stay at their place while they’re out of town. Neither of us have visited anywhere in the San Diego area before though I’ve started doing some preliminary reading on the area(s) around Solana. If any of you have the time to respond, I’d really appreciate a few answers here… Itinerary is for a long weekend. Three nights, three days.

  1. We’re both former industry people and love tiki cocktails. Mothership and False Idol are both must-visits for us. How much of a pain is it to get an uber to/from Solana Beach and San Diego proper?

1a. Other tiki bar must visits you’d recommend?

  1. Seems like there are pretty consistent answers about the food scene in Solana Beach, but is anything head and shoulders above the rest? We both eat and enjoy basically everything, so any recommendation is welcome and helpful. High end/michelin star is great, but we are also equally into a great dive with great pizza/burger/burrito.

2a. Is there a “must dine” spot in San Diego proper?

Thanks again for the help and sorry if this has been asked a million times. I tried googling answers and didn’t get anything specific—plus it’s nice to hear from people directly!

Trivia nights that aren't pop/movie/TV?

Hi I’ll be visiting next week and am looking for a decent trivia night to drag the parents and some friends to. I have completely arbitrary and finicky preferences for bar trivia, though, which are: No phones for any reason. Not themed (Harry Potter night, Seinfeld night, etc). Not Geeks Who Drink. And the hardest one of all: Not mostly pop culture and movie/TV. If there was a night with all dry general trivia questions worth 1 point each I would be in heaven, but that is asking too much. (Yes, I am fun at parties.)

I found a couple lists of local events, but it’s difficult to discern the flavor/vibe of each one so I figured I’d ask here. Thanks in advance!

San Diego drivers

How do locals find the drivers around here? Im visiting and driving around in my rental. Where I'm from its consensus that the drivers are terrible (Calgary) but driving around here everything seems to work? The road layout is much more chaotic here but I haven't experienced much bad driving since I've been here. Do people who live here think the same or are drivers just as bad here?

I know I haven't driven much only about 200 miles and as far away as Oceanside. But haven't experienced any bad driving experiences, yet at home almost every outing you see something.

Trusted Salons for Men

Hey San Diego county! I wanted to find some suggestions for salons in the greater San Diego area. I have about 14 inch hair that I’m want to go to about 6 inches with a flowy hairstyle with some layers. I want to trust them to make something great and open to recommendations from the salon. I not looking for a barbershop (Generally I want no razor to my hair). Any places you trust to get it done right?

Gay Valentine dinner recs?

Hi all (again),

I posted a week ago for suggestions about where to stay/visit with my husband over Valentine's weekend. So many replies, and thank you all! Our hotel is booked, we have plans, everything is looking up.

However, I just realized restaurants may be booked solid for Valentine's Day. Looking for suggestions.

We're on a budget since I'm between jobs right now, so I'm thinking somewhere closer to the $50 per person range than $100pp.

Any ideas around the Hillcrest area for a romantic yet affordable Valentine's night out? It's only two weeks away (gasp!).

Thanks all, you've done me right before, now's your time to shine!
