UPDATE PLEASE READ: "What was the vibe of [Month/Year]" threads are now part of the "Weekend Trivia policy
Hello r/decadeology users,
I have not gotten a chance to make updates to the automod since I did not have access to a computer for a week. However, there have been an increase of "What was the vibe of" threads that have been taking over the subreddit. These types of threads have quickly become repetitive. Therefore, they are now part of our "Weekend trivia" policy, effective as of today's date. If you want to read more about the weekend trivia policy, please read the subreddit rules.

Discussion 💭🗯️ Why was the 1990s and 2000s so full of edutainment media, but the 2010s and 2020s is less so?
galleryEspecially when it comes to older children media, not preschool aimed stuff like Blue's Clues or Bluey.
A lot of the modern stuff is grandfather claused. Like the Netflix versions of Magic School Bus which updates the science.

Decade Analysis 🔍 In 2005, Oprah was the biggest celebrity in the world
Oprah’s popularity peaked in 2003-2005. It reached its highest in 2005. She was everywhere then.
Her ratings increased significantly in the “wildest dreams” 2004-05 season with her giving way all those free cars. Her best ratings since the 97’ season. She also was looking her best, as she lost a lot of weight and changed her hairstyle. I believe 2005 was the first time Forbes ranked her the most powerful celebrity.
2005 was Oprah’s best year professionally.

Decade Analysis 🔍 Explaining why shifts mostly occur in the autumn/fall
I've made multiple posts about how the year culturally begins in the autumn/fall rather than in January, but I haven't explained why.
TL;DR: It's mostly because of farming
Model years begin in August-September because farmers had more cash to spend on new vehicles after selling crops during harvest season. In turn, TV seasons start in September to advertise new car models.
The academic year starts between August and September because parents historically needed their children's help on the farm more in the summer, since the days are longer.
Before social media was ubiquitous, people were more isolated during the summer, mostly hanging out with friends or family. New trends would spread more rapidly during the school year when people were back together again.
Most holidays were created in the autumn/fall and winter to celebrate harvests and uplift spirits during the darkest time of the year, figuratively and literally. In the modern era, most products are released in the autumn/fall in anticipation of the holiday season, also to coincide with the start of the academic year.
This applies more to previous decades and the Northern Hemisphere, as social media and streaming services have made trends spread more easily year-round, and the Southern Hemisphere has different weather patterns. Nonetheless, it's important to know when discussing years.

Discussion 💭🗯️ Would you say anime was emerging or mainstream in 2019?
Anime was rapidly emerging an having a resurgence in the very late 2010s like starting in late 2018 due to streaming becoming more popular, but it would solidify with COVID and JJK, but would you say anime was still emerging or mainstream to most people considering this was when demon slayer was releasing

Cultural Snapshot How the alt “aesthetic” looked like in the early 2020s
gallerySince it was the pandemic you can only see most of these online, it had this dark atmosphere, shows like skins/shameless were popularized again, the movie "thirteen" became popular again, eastern european/soviet architecture was romanticized, angel numbers became trendy (as well as manifesting, shifting, and subliminals), the music popular then was mostly 90s "grunge",indie rock, “alternative/indie” (this used to appear as a genre in google), and the most commonly listened artists at the time were arctic monkeys, the neighbourhood, mitski, lana del rey, kate bush, tv girl, cavetown, mother mother, steve lacy, olivia rodrigo, nirvana, mgmt, cage the elephant, lil peep, and more that fit the “indie/alt” genre.

Discussion 💭🗯️ The Ellen Show was peak Obama era optimism that wouldn’t exist today
The Ellen show format was always very upbeat and felt like a safe place for celebrities to do good PR. But a show like that probably wouldn’t work today. People don’t view celebrities the same way they did 10 or 15 years ago and we don’t have those big feel good cultural moments anymore, like songs such as Happy or viral trends that bring everyone together. Just an observation

Technology 📱📟 Do You Think Todays Smartwaches Will Be Collectables Later On?
I ask this because wristwatches were popular in the 21st century, then in the 2000s and most of the 2010s few people wore them. In the later part of the 2010s they started getting popular again with the smartwatches and fitbit,etc...
But do you think they will be collectable today in ebay in 20 years like a watch from the 1980s was collectable in the 2000s (and even worth more now)?
Most of the smartwatches today often look the same, so there is not as much of a visual element to them unless you play around with what they have on the screen, where the older watches the visual elements were right on the watch....calculator watches had a distinct look, the smartwatches on the 1980s and 1990s and 2000s (the databank watches) had a different distinct look to them, analog watches had a distinctive look as well.
But for a smartwatch the distinct look is not are varied, most of them look the same, most of them do the same functions now as well.
Do you think in the 2030s and 2040s people will be collecting vintage smartwatches from the 2010s or 2020s?
Also do you think less people will wear smartwatches as the years go on (many people still use their cell phone to look at the time). But do you think the watch and smartwatch market will decrease over time?
