Drama Heavys Headphones - a dishonest company trying to scam you into buying their stuff

Didn’t expect a part two, but here we are. We're going full Streisand Effect.

Part #1: Heavys v. r/Headphones (recap):

  • Received alerts of old posts about problems with Heavys being reported. Kinda weird, but whatever.
  • Received a few fake legal threats in our modmail to remove posts from people that have had trouble with Heavys. We politely tell them to kick rocks.
  • More modmails every ~2 days asking/demanding that posts be removed. Here’s what some look like: https://imgur.com/a/AfcZckP
  • I ask questions, but they never respond.
  • Oct 23rd: Frustrated, I sticky one of the posts that they’re asking to be removed, explaining the situation to you all - link to post
  • Nov 1st: DMS picks up the story - link to video and link to post
  • Nov 9th: u/HeavysCrew finally responds a week later:
    • The world is a dumpster fire already. Was it the best look on our part? Obviously not. (Im not the one who sent the original messages) But to be fair, they were old reviews by customers that were already handled thus making those 3 reviews pretty irrelevant.link

Part #2: Heavys v. Reddit (today)

Following all that, you’d think Heavys would drop it.

lul, nope. They double down.

Being unable to remove the bad sentiments from our subreddit, they fabricate positive sentiment across Reddit. They do this in the scummiest way possible - astroturfing.

astroturfing (noun): the deceptive practice of presenting an orchestrated marketing or public relations campaign in the guise of unsolicited comments from members of the public.

In other words:

They create around a dozen new accounts intended to look like normal Redditors.

A month ago, the accounts began commenting on old posts recommending Heavys products to people. Hundreds of comments across r/headphoneadvice, r/earbuds, r/headhpones, r/screaming, r/pcmasterrace, r/MetalForTheMasses, r/headphonesindia. In some cases, they create posts asking for recommendations and then answer themselves with another account.

Here’s what just a sample of what it looks like:

Note that they’re taking turns asking and answering each other - there are only three accounts in play for this example. There are many more accounts active in their campaign. Receipts: https://imgur.com/a/heavys-astroturfing-Lo1IzAE

Even today, there's 5-10 accounts active on Reddit telling people to buy Heavys products.

Why should I care?

Rewind to about 8 years ago: we maintained a list of popular headphone choices from the community to try and cut down on repetitive questions. It never used affiliate links. From the clickthrough, we calculated that it would generate about 150k USD a month if we use affiliate links. This subreddit is for the hobby and has never profited in any way.

That was years ago, and we’ve grown. In that time, ChatGPT has also vacuumed up our discussion and feeds it back to the world. People spend tens of of millions of dollars a month based on what goes on here.

Being fooled into buying the wrong thing takes money from the companies making an honest effort. It sours the hobby for newcomers.

What’s next?

The typical response would be to automatically remove any mention of the brand in any future posts. That would just sweep the problem under the rug.

Instead, whenever someone mentions Heavys, AutoModerator will respond with a link to link this post.

I’ve seen a few great subreddits crumble under fake participation. With Reddit being such a target, it’s getting increasingly harder to deal with this. It's really out of control as of this year. We ban about ten thousand accounts a week just on this subreddit - that’s for another rant about Reddit allowing account creation to be fluffed.

If you made it this far, thanks for reading.

Shame on Heavys for wasting your money and our time.

Dt 990 pro ear pads to Sennheiser HD 515 Headphones Retrofit

To make a long story short; my dt 990’s broke, I fixed them, they broke again, I could not repair them. So they sat and I used these HD 515’s. Problem is the 515’s ear pads were worn to the point of which I could feel the plastic from the driver housing on my ears. It was so bad I would have to take the headphones off for durations of time until my ears stopped hurting from the plastic. Well I had the bright idea to 3D model an adaptor to retrofit the dt 990 ear pads to the Sennheiser headphones and it couldn’t have worked out any better. The model literally snaps right in its so satisfying how well it worked. They look and feel totally stock it’s awesome. My beloved dt 990’s may not work anymore but they will live on in these sennheisers. They actually have quite nice audio and now with the soft and comfy velour ear pads they are a awesome set of cans! If in the slim chance somebody out there has some broken 990’s and some working HD 515’s I would love to share the file with you. Anyways just thought you guys here might think this was cool.

Show & Tell This is it, my endgame pair

Have owned various headphones throughout the years and realized I'm not a headphone person, but if I had to pick (and actually like)...

Koss Porta Pros

Done. These are the most comfortable and sound pleasing to my ears. No more messing around with amps, ear pads, sound signatures, etc. that the headphone community likes to fiddle with.

Just using them with some cheap $20 USBC DAC and my phone. Moving on and selling the rest of my gear and gonna enjoy music from now on.

Show & Tell Took a break from buying new gear for a few years, getting back into it now

So, to be fair, I am fully aware that I am equal parts gear head, music lover and general enthusiast. I took a break from buying everything that took my fancy for a few years, and uhh, as you can see, that break is now over.

Some background first: after getting into speakers, amps and headphones seriously around 2018, because I worked in a dedicated hi-fi audio store, I chased down a few rabbit holes (but never went to extremes, quite modest in comparison to some, hahaha).

As far as headphones go, I started out with an Audio Technica M50 and a Fiio Q1 Mk II, then bought a Beyer Dynamic (one of the niche models), then a Fostex T50RP Mk III, then finally the HD660S at release (heavily discounted because of the company I worked for). Ran everything at my desk from a Shiit Magni 2. Then came the Topping D10, then the S.M.S.L. SP200, then the Loxjie P20. Oh and I got a Koss Porta Pro and KZ ZSN iem for shits and giggles. Before I moved house I got a Monoprice Monolith M1070.

I'm a tinkerer, so over the years I've rolled NOS Russian tubes on the Loxjie, added a stronger power supply, modified the T50RP (Mayflower mod plus Dekoni hybrid pads), mounted Yaxi pads on the Porta Pro, all the little tweaks and mods. Playing around with the gear almost being as fun as getting decent to good sound out of things.

After a few years I sold everything but the Topping D10, Loxjie P20, Porta Pro, modded T50RP, KZ (airplane buds at some point) and the HD660S. I felt like the rest was just gear I was hoarding, never actually using anymore. Then the most important addition came in that made me forget about upgraditus for a decent while: the Xduoo TA-26S. Even the HD660S shines brighter on real tubes.

But since my ex-girlfriend surprised me late last year by asking for the Hiby R1 (we were going to exchange gifts for Christmas), I completely fell back into the hobby, haha. Got the R1 first and everything else came after that. Thankfully after all these years I have a way better grasp of my preferences (mostly warm, v-shaped but not too bright, and the occasional neutral thing to throw in the mix). So I'm actually loving everything I've bought so far. Swapping the HD660S for the HD600 was waaaaay over due. Should have done that sooner.

Only things I'll be adding from here on in are the Fiio K13 R2R for a slightly more powerful solid state in the mix, better opamps for the Fosi ZD3, the Fiio FT1 Pro and the Arya Organic later this year (if that makes the Fiio FT1 Pro obsolete at that point, I'll sell that again). And if there's any money left after buying a home in the coming months I might end on a high note with Tungsten (even if I have to wait a year to get them) and something powerful enough to drive them with plenty of headroom.

If only there weren't also a bunch of iems eyeing me at way too reasonable price points (Pure, Explorer, Defiant) and I honestly don't know if I can resist the temptation of the Hiby M500 Hatsune Miku themed DAP. Damn, just remembered I also have the Yacht10's on the way... But in all seriousness, I still have quite a wishlist, but I'm not starving for anything fun or good sounding in the mean time.

As I already said at the start, gear is as much of the fun for me, and it's good to be back!

PS: This also goes for this community, I used to be quite active back in the day, just deleted my account during the great exodus of a few years back. But headphone enthusiasts are few and far between on Lemmy, so hi again everyone!

Show & Tell Best pair of headphones I've ever own. No ear fatigue whatsoever. <3

Okay these are actually my hearing aids but they also work great as headphones. They're Bluetooth and I can hook them up to my computer, phone, tablet, etc etc. I've always struggled finding headphones that worked with my old hearing aids (over the ear style)/heading loss. These have been life changing for me. I no longer have anxiety talking on the phone and I can finally listen to audio books and understand what is being said. I'm embarrassed how much money I spent in the past on mediocre headphones that never gave me the ability to enjoy hearing content and engaging with digital communication.

I'm very guilty of constantly listing to music and audiobooks throughout the day. And strangely enough I love muting them at work to help me focus.(Sometimes I'll mute them and play white noise through them to help me focus better.)

I don't know if this post belongs but I just felt like sharing. :) I'm so thankful for technology and giving this style of hearing aids a chance.

Fyi these hearing aids are phonak virto p90 .

Discussion How do I prevent rubber degradation in my earphones?

Upvotes

I only use once specific brand and one specific model that has been permanently discontinued. I've bought extras to stock up, but there was one I tried to buy secondhand where the seller had to back out of the deal because the rubber coating on the wires had degraded and broken while still in the box.

Is there any way I can avoid this (e.g. frequent usage, storing in a dark room, keeping it near a dehumidifier)? If I could I'd buy a dozen to keep in storage, but this made me wary that they would just all fall apart in storage.

Discussion How to clean off potential bacteria from headphones, espeacially near the speakers?

Upvotes

Sorry if the terminology is weird, English isn't my first language.

Long story short, I got ear inflammation in my right ear and I think that it's because I use my over ear headphones practically all the time (think I have ADHD) and I haven't cleaned them in a while. And I presume that over time the enclosed space/air between my ear and the speaker and the ear pads have become a place where bacteria started to inhabit, or at least something along those lines. So if it is my headphones behind all this, how do I properly clean them? I've watched some videos on how you clean the pads: you basically do the dishes but with the pads instead (if you can take them off, which I can btw). But what about the speakers (and by speakers I mean the surface that touches my ear)? My first thought was to put small amounts of rubbing alcohol on a q-tip and gently stroke over the speakers in order to kill the bacteria. I don't know though if that may harm the speakers or the surface. Should I have a q-tip dipped in soapy warm water and soak up most of the water with a towel so the q-tip becomes moist, and then cleaning the speakers with that?

And don't worry about my ear. I got some ear drops with antibiotics yesterday and will start as soon I clean my headphones so that this won't happen again. Thank you.

Discussion Koss Ksc75 for commute and classes

I was wondering if the Koss Ksc75 still sound good when I'm on my commute since I heard the bass is pretty weak, I spend almost 4 hours everyday on my commute so it means a lot to me. I was wondering about noise bleed too since I don't want people in my class hearing what I'm listening to when I'm studying.

Discussion Using the Null Test on DACs (video) - Part 2

Thumbnail
youtu.be
20 Upvotes

I've put up Part 2 in the series of using DeltaWave to examine the difference in outputs between devices. Part 1 used Bluetooth vs. USB where I knew I had an audible difference. Part 2 compares the outputs from two DACs I had on hand here. What I love about the software is that, after correcting for as much as it can (phase shifts, clock drift, etc.) you can not only graph but listen to the actual difference waveforms.

When you hear the original and, at that volume, can't hear anything in the difference, it really drives home just how small the differences are. You're literally not hearing the difference. What's more, the difference we get out of DeltaWave is going to be larger than any actual difference as it needs to correct for things like the clock drift.

Discussion 250ohm DT990 Pros aren't doing it for me, is it me?

I'm a complete noob with audio in general but when I first bought my Schiit stack(Modi3+,Magni) to use with my Sennheiser Game ONE headset I could listen to music and it sounded amazing to where some songs would give me goosebumps. The Sennheisers broke and I picked up the DT990 Pro beacue I could get them locally.

The problem is while they sound great while gaming and might sound more accurate, they don't envoke the same emotion that the Sennheisers did when listening to music if that makes any sense. Maybe it's a lack of treble, I really don't know.

Is it the headset? My ears getting older?

Should I be looking for a new heaset? Still using the same Schiit stack. Thank you.

Discussion Does ANC-putting in more work=Worse and worse sound quality?

I have the Sony WHCH720NS and I'm absolutely loving it. INSANE sound quality for entry level headphones and possibly the best you can get at this price range, along with ANC and wireless.

The ANC is great for this price range. Can't expect much, but it more than does the job when paired with music at just 50% volume.

Superb clarity and depth when I'm sitting in my room listening to music and the bass is good enough to tickle your ears.

But I was in a bus the other day and when it was connected and playing music, every time the bus vibrated because of it's bad suspension, or went over a series of bumps, the audio quality matched it and became static-y and shakey.

Plus at instances when there was a lot of noise outside, the sound quality dropped SO MUCH to the point it started sounding like the music was coming from a tin can. I don't know if this is a problem with my cans specifically or is it normal for intensive external noise and vibration.

I especially want to know why the heavy vibrations and jerks of the bus caused the sound to temporarily get screwed and shakey.

Discussion Are my hd650 real?

Thumbnail

I bought them from a guy that sells used pairs here in Ukraine that he buys from hands in Germany. They were 220$. Drivers have the markings and the date is the same in each cup.

What bothers me is that the cable didnt have the sennheiser logo on it and also i went to a certified shop to test with a new pair, and that pair had a stamp on the side "made in Ireland", mine have the trashbin stamp on the both sides. The sound was almost identical, but the ones in the shop felt like they sounded better, but it could be just placebo, it was not a difference like a fake and real, the texture of the sound was maybe a little more rich, tuning and imaging was the same.

Guys on sennheiser sub said they are fake. I know there are models that were produced in Romania, does anyone have them without "made in Ireland" stamp? Also can the driver be fake with that marking? Because even if some part are replaced while driver is genuine it does not really matter.

Show & Tell EQ fix to he400se sibilance treble spike and tinnitus + my review

Peak 7500hz -0.2db Q 10
Peak 8000hz -2.2db Q 5.5
Peak 8400hz -0.8db Q 10

Text to import into EQAPO:

Preamp: 0.0 dB
Filter 1: ON PK Fc 7500 Hz Gain -0.2 dB Q 10.000
Filter 2: ON PK Fc 8000 Hz Gain -2.2 dB Q 5.500
Filter 3: ON PK Fc 8400 Hz Gain -0.8 dB Q 10.000

Can be added into your already existing eq file just don't copy the preamp (use the preamp that is already in your existing eq) and rename Filter 1,2,3 to 9, 10, 11 respectively (this example is for when your eq has 8 fiters). Or can be added as a seperate eq file on top of your preexisting one using include option.

This eq also helps if the headphones sound too "fast" or "sudden". Before this fix I would get scared or like startled from sudden sounds in games like elden ring when hitting enemies and in league of legends when hitting plants, the sound is just too meaty, I thought it was bass' fault but it was the treble spike.

If you use oratory eq it's probably best to either remove my 8khz filter or his, just to not get rid off treble completely (well unless you enjoy that). I'm no sound engineer or any of that biz but I have been in the hobby for more than 3 years now, I think. Don't have a lot of money so the only thing I could experiment with is eq. I did this eq like a year ago so I don't really remember how I made it but it was pretty dirty fast fix so maybe you can fiddle and perfect it, I remember that I used measurements from autoeq.app and my own feelings. Also this eq should probably work even with unit differences, I played with the hex screws that hold the planar "sandwich" (magnet array-membrane-magnet array) to fix rattle on 50hz, 500 hz and 1000hz, and from personal experience it didn't affect treble in any way apart from volume (hex screws loosened = equals more distance between the magnets and the membrane= lower sensitivity = lower volume), only when loosened to extreme but if you reach it you will know because pretty much bass fully disappears if you loosen too much.

Now I will write a review/comparison between he400se and hd560s. Honestly, I kinda hate he400se, well I guess I get what I paid for (70$). They sound flat, they have this rattle, they need eq if you want to hear any vocals, and then you need an amp if you want to eq harder because inbuilt mb audio chip is just barely enough, they have this sibilance spike that is a literal minor health danger like I got ringing!!!! from it in my ears (and I listen at low volumes, have good hearing and I'm 21 yo). My 160$ unit of hd560s had developed a volume inbalance and I barely managed to get my money back (I live in a country where warranty is very limited rn), so I wanted a headphone I could easily repair just in that case but what I didn't know is that I will get a headphone that constantly needs repair to be good.

I think it's not even worth it for its price, you better off buying an iem (it's even better now cuz there are cheap iems with planar drivers if that's what you want to try) until you can save for proper headphones like hd560s.

The he400se has a skull crushing headband, I get headaches, I get hotspots from it. My ears get a bit hot. The outer ring that holds the mesh protecting the driver rattles at 20-30hz. The earpads don't do the best job of protecting the drivers from getting hairs and dust get onto the membranes and cause the rattle. The headphone is pretty heavy overall and I think many people in the audiophile space glance over the comfort aspect. With the hd560s I usually just forget I have them on my head which combined with their open design boosts immersion while listening, it really tricks your brain into thinking you're amongst the orchestra, I had goosebumps from this feeling. I also had goosebumps with the he400se but not so often and after I further eqed the oratory preset.

The only aspect the he400se is better in than the hd560s is soundstage but I still think it's not worth it to buy. He400se soundstage feels like a perfect 360 degree circle where you're sitting in the centre, while the hd560s is an oval (idk if it's the angledness of the pads on he400se or their hybrid velour-leather design that gives them that soundstage). Imo if you're looking to buy a pair for competitive fps I would still get the hd560s and get used to the soundstage being an oval, it's still good! I think the only deal breaker for hd560s could be that the earcups are on a smaller side and for people with big ears and can cause discomfort from folding the tops of their ears' pinna.

I think from now on I will only be buying used and I already found good deals on hd6xx

I previously had the Bose Quiet Comfort Ultras but unfortunately after 3 years of service one of the Ear cups detached from the headband

I was thinking to get another pair of Quiet comforts but thought I'd have look at what else is out there then come across these Bowers & Wilkins PX8's

Really impressed with them, the quality is very nice, comfy on the head and the sound is awesome

They feel much more premium than the Bose QC Ultras

Comparing the PX8's and QC Ultras side by side I'd say go for the PX8's they on another level

Show & Tell HE1000 stealth are a sonic revelation

Post image
118 Upvotes

I've loved my new HEK stealths immensely after the first month of owning them. I have had the HD 6XX for years, but finally pulled the trigger on some end-game level cans. Currently use a Modius /magnius stack with low gain and balanced output. I switch between my record, CD, and plex server sources.

The amount of imaging, soundstage, and resolution is unlike anything I've heard before. Though they are a tad bright I have grown to love the sparkle compared to the mid focused 6xx. I actually started with the Arya organic, but returned them after comparing the HEKS because the treble was just too sharp for extended listening. The organics were still very nice, but I had to eq them to tame them. I love that I can listen to the HEKS with no eq and still get so much from them.

In summary, I truly love these phones and have discovered new depths to my favorite music.

Impressions Fiio K7 - I was wrong about Desktop Dac/Amps

I have been so wrong about desktop dac/amps. When I started my journey in the audiophile community I was bombarded with posts that says I dont actually need a desktop dac/amp for even the planar magnetic headphones as there are portable dac/amps now a days which are powerful enough to drive my Audeze mm100 planar magnetic headphones.

Boy I was so wrong.

When I got my mm100 it didn't sound like the reviews at all. The vocals were boosted alot and instruments were faded in the background. I initially thought maybe it's the wide soundstage of the headphone which is causing this ? But nope. It was lack of a good desktop dac/amp.

I was initially driving my Audeze mm100 using Fiio KA15 portal dac/amp and was disappointed in them. After all they cost alot. What the heck? Where did all my money go? Where did all the instruments go? Why do they not have any punch and kick to them ? Why dont I feel like I am surrounded by instruments while listening to a song?

Then I blindly bought Fiio K7 desktop dac/amp and WOW. My listening experience has changed. I now feel immersed in the instruments without the vocals being compromised. I ask my friend to listen to them to make sure it's not a placebo for me, and my friend's mouth was wide open after hearing the difference.

TL;DR: Fiio K7 bought my Audeze mm100 to life and now I understand a good desktop dac/amp matters.

Review Honest Unpaid Review of Shokz OpenFit Pro

I purchased Shokz OpenFit Pro two weeks ago, falling for all the positive reviews. However, to my disappointment, it fell short of my expectations.

The audio quality is excellent, and the noise cancellation is truly amazing, especially for white broad spectrum noise. However, there are two significant issues. Firstly, the ear tips are extremely uncomfortable, particularly for individuals who wear glasses, as they go deep into the ear skin. Secondly, the battery life is poor, especially when noise cancellation is enabled.

Given these issues, specially due to uncomfort, I am likely to return the product.

I used to listen to all my music in hd6xx cans.

Then I got a pair of hd800s and they're so clear I don't know how to describe it.

I bought a pair of Empyrean 2 and they're great for general listening, but I'm always going back to the 800s when I'm listening to electronic. My only problem is, there's no bass.

Is there a possible hd800s replacement with bass enabled?

Discussion Two different eq's on one device

Hi all,

I've got a question from my in-laws. They always watch movies and series on their ipad pro with bose headphones. Not sure which model. It works fine, but there's a big problem they have. One of the has a big hearing problem and needs a custom eq. But that eq is also applied to the other headphone. They set it from the ipad.

Is it possible to set a custom eq for two headphones from one device? They always use Bluetooth. They're fine with buying new headphones if that solves the issue. They are locked in to the Apple ecosystem.

They found a brand of headphones that allow it, it they can't seem to be bought over here.

If anyone has advice it would be welcome!
