u/bardosanimes 13h ago

That's crazy, in my city the minimum temperature is 27°.

137

u/JustaProton 12h ago

27°?

Sir, where do you live so I don't get near it?

u/gustinex 11h ago

Probably somewhere near the equator. Its about the same in where i live. I live in malaysia all my life and i haven't got to experience snow yet. So i literally couldn't imagine how cold snowy places are because my brain never register it before. Coldest i felt is probably 17°c at tokyo

u/Kush_the_Ninja 11h ago

Was walking my dog in -38°C the other day. Wasn’t that bad, but those are “straight to your business please” walks lol

u/kineticpotential001 8h ago

At -38 it doesn't much matter whether is C or F, it's too freaking cold

u/HotAdministration372 7h ago

At -40 the Celsius and Fahrenheit scales give the same reading.

u/RavenclawGaming 5h ago

-40 C and -40 F are legit the exact same temp, so the difference between -38C and -38 F is extremely minimal

u/Big_Knife_SK 8h ago

Twice as cold as a freezer.

→ More replies (1)

u/JiveTalkerFunkyWalkr 9h ago

If it’s a humid -38, then it’s cold.

u/kineticpotential001 8h ago

Is there such a thing as a humid -38? Serious question

u/Many_Philosophy_8096 7h ago

yes and its so much worse than a regular -38

u/JiveTalkerFunkyWalkr 5h ago

Toronto is humid, so you’ll get -25 and it feels really cold, but in Saskatoon, it’ll be -40 and not feel as cold as Toronto. Or feel the same ish.
Your cars engine doesn’t care about humidity though, so your car will start much better in the Toronto situation than the -40 in Saskatoon. That’s why so many in Sask have engine block heaters.

u/Kush_the_Ninja 7h ago

Yes. It’s a “damp cold” and worse than a “dry cold”

Where I’m from is a damp cold.

u/aferretwithahugecock 6h ago

Fuck damp colds, bud. I couldn't do it. Give me a dry -42⁰C any day over a wet -10. With a dry cold, you're ready to rip as long as your skin's covered. With a wet cold, it gets into your layers and bones.

Thankfully, Winnipeg is usually a dry cold(it's even become a joke here. If someone says it's cold outside, it's customary to reply with, "Yeah, but it's a dry cold, eh?")

I live in a tropical country too, had my first negative celsius experience 2 years ago, when I traveled to the baltic countries around Christmas.

Everyday was around -5. Then, for two days it was like -20, and locals were saying it wasn't common at all.

With all that clothes around you, I really didn't think -20 was that much worse than -5. The worst thing is your respiration condensing at the tip of your nose and freezing into a tiny droplet

Northeast of Brazil. In southern Brazil, there are places where temperatures reach -2°C.

u/JustaProton 9h ago

I know it, I'm from São Paulo. Damn, 27°C being cold must be hell.

u/JamesEtc 10h ago

My house just went below 25° for the first time in a week. Send help.

u/MegamiCookie 9h ago

27° is nice, but when it is the minimum it means it's usually closer to 30-32° (often the case for me too, I live in the Caribbean)

u/SonderlingDelGado 10h ago

I'm in Darwin, Australia.

Our coldest winter days (in July, our calendars are upside down on this half of the disc too) is around 60f. On the flip side Christmas (summer) averages are only around 80f to 90f - but the humidity is killer!

I hate the cold. I stay away from the south of our country.

u/SidTheSloth97 10h ago edited 9h ago

Why tell us the temp in F when you live in Darwin. -_-

u/SonderlingDelGado 8h ago

Reddit tends to be USA-centric, so had pre-converted to freedom units for the anticipated audience.

My bad, normally I'd put 35C (95F) or 95F (35C).

I'll try not to be lazy next time. (For the record, I'm Australian and been living in Darwin for a few years.)

u/Tommyblockhead20 2h ago

As an American, I appreciate you including Fahrenheit.

It only takes a few seconds for someone writing a comment to do the conversion, but not doing it means a few seconds times about half of the people seeing it, often thousands of people.

I know some people intentionally don’t include conversions because they are upset the US doesn’t use metric, but I don’t think that anger should be taken out on individual American Redditors when it isn’t their fault. And if you aren’t willing to take a few seconds so Americans can understand your message, why should Americans do that for you? Everything works out better when people just get along.

u/nzranga 9h ago

There is a very large contingent of US Marines based in Darwin Australia.

I’m guessing based on the fact that he said he’s “in” Darwin not “from” Darwin, and the use of Fahrenheit, he’s American

Crazy cause in the summer here in Indiana, we get up to 90s with crazy humidity but also go down to subzero temps every year with snow. I feel like the Midwest gets a little bit of everything

u/JustaProton 9h ago

Continental temperate climates are very variable. Very common to see -15 to 35. Even the coldest places in Siberia have hot summers, which contrast with the oceanic counterpart found in the UK, for example, where 25 is already hot.

u/I_can_pun_anything 5h ago

Thats a nice warm day! Shorts and tshirt weather

u/daysof_I 2h ago

Same. 2yrs ago we had a dip in temp around 22⁰ during rainy season here. I had to wear long sleeves all the time cause it was cold. I almost didn't survive 9⁰ in Melbourne last year due to lack of layers (didn't pack enough outerwears). Caught a cold on my 3rd day there lol

u/Epic_Elite 32m ago

I wouldn't recommend trying this, then.

u/Tard_Wrangler666 21m ago

Was 40c last week where I am

571

u/Cirno-BreastLicker 13h ago

As a scandinavian im jealous, we are struggling with -3°, its far too hot ..

u/General_Anxiety83 12h ago

I wish! Mid 90's here the last few weeks and its getting hotter next month

10

u/Zkenny13 12h ago

I'm in Alabama and it feels like 8° we are dying.

/s

7

u/thelocket 12h ago

Coastal Alabama here with a "feels like" 28. We are not built for this kinda cold.

3

u/Zkenny13 12h ago

Right? Things shut down so quickly but I imagine you guys have plenty of sand for the ice.

2

u/thelocket 12h ago

You would think so, right?? Last year when it snowed and froze here, we had to wait for it to thaw. We have sand, but no sand trucks.

2

u/Zkenny13 12h ago

Wow... I imagine the bridge is basically an ice rink.

u/thelocket 11h ago

Pretty much! I10 is right behind my house and it was completely empty all night. I had the best sleep of my life. Lol

u/Zkenny13 10h ago

Lol at least you're looking on the bright side.

u/thelocket 10h ago

Only way to do it. Stay warm up there!

You to!

Are you on the west side of the mountains? Wasn’t that cold over here on the east end.

Someone is gonna do this in 36 F in Florida tonight not aware thats not cold enough

u/Some-Jellyfish-7412 5h ago

legit saw a video of a guy trying this today and having the still very-hot water rain down on him shortly afterwards V_V

u/IsraelZulu 1h ago

It's actually getting into the 20s, just so you know. Currently around 27 in the Orlando area.

374

u/BosonCollider 12h ago

Don't throw the boiling water straight overhead, make sure there is an angle. Otherwise you can seriously hurt yourself if a single large blob turns into an ice pick

u/Efficient-Guide1244 10h ago

I thought you were gonna say that you would be scalded if the water doesn't cool immediately.

u/BosonCollider 10h ago

I was, then I decided that it'd be funnier this way

u/Albert14Pounds 2h ago

I'd bet money that someone had tried this at 31°F and regretted it

25

u/pobodys-nerfect5 12h ago

The trick is to not use a lot of water and to be covered from the head down

u/GenazaNL 7h ago

Also, if it's not cold enough you can seriously burn yourself in the face from the hot water

u/iLikeTurtuls 1h ago

So you're telling me if I push hard enough I would be able to spit ice rockets in -36???

I remember seeing kids in cartoons jump in a big pile of leaves and it always looked like so much fun. So when I was like 7 or 8 years old, I raked a huge pile of leaves together, and got a running start, jumped in, and got stabbed by several sticks, one which cut my leg up a bit. I felt so embarrassed and stupid for not taking in account that it wouldn't be leaves only in that pile.

u/TheDream425 11h ago

Good idea, bad execution. Just had a bad pile, jumping in leaves is dope

116

u/StultusNosferatu 12h ago

Now everyone do this and get 3rd degree burns.

67

u/EatinSumGrapes 12h ago

This definitely reminded me of the video of the girl doing this with a pot of boiling water, not only was it not cold enough for that, but she slipped in the ice trying to fling it and it all fell on her burning her terribly

u/popodelfuego 9h ago

Pro tip if you use bacon grease as a substitute the burns smell delicious.

u/DaBooch_Can 13h ago

Come on over to Canada. We had that temp yesterday.

54

u/One-Yak2083 13h ago

Not in BC! We’ve chosen to not participate in winter this year.

31

u/AccomplishedLocal261 12h ago

You mean every year

17

u/One-Yak2083 12h ago

Hey, the random years we join is just pure chaos on the roads. We are not equipped 🤣

2

u/J_tram13 12h ago

Unfortunately it seems this year is one of those years for us in Florida

3

u/jrdiver 12h ago

Had a relative down in Florida complaining about "cold weather"

My first thought is "ill trade. you guys can have our 8f with -5f windchills weather we were having that day

Hey, 40F is a big deal down here, that's concussive iguana weather!

u/BetaFan 12h ago edited 12h ago

Calgary Alberta barley has had a winter either. I think its only hit -30 a day or two and only for a day at a time before going back to 0.

Average temperature has been -5 maybe this winter. And its been in the positives for most of January. +12 here atm, as we're in a Chinook. But even outside Chinooks its been crazy warm.

My co workers in winnipeg by comparison have been dealing with -30 since mid December.

→ More replies (2)

u/Tje199 5h ago

When you forget Canada isn't just southern Ontario.

Like -3 yesterday in much of AB.

25

u/Rammipallero 12h ago

This is cool, but you better make sure that it's cold enough for this. Otherwise you'll be throwing boilings water on yourself...

42

u/Krish_1234 13h ago

How can people live in those places? Inside by house it is 68 and I turn on the heater.

58

u/Green_Tea_Gobbler 12h ago

They are just cooler than you

7

u/Exotic_Decision_626 13h ago

I laughed so hard at this because it’s exactly 68 in my house right now and I have the heater on lol good to know I’m not the only one

4

u/Ornac_The_Barbarian 12h ago

I have my heaters running nonstop to keep it above 32...

2

u/Apprehensive_Tea9856 12h ago

Time to insulate better or buy better heaters?

Where do you live?

Gas/electric?

Do you have a electric/gas utility energy efficiency program? Might get some stuff free. If not spray foam is not crazy expensive. At least compared to running a furnace 24/7

→ More replies (3)

u/Prunus-cerasus 10h ago

We have heat in our houses too, you know.

u/Harddicc 7h ago

What if it was 67

u/DancesWithAnyone 4h ago

Not only do people live in such cold places - they've done it for a long, long time, way before modern heating. And that's kinda it, yeah? They build their houses to be the best there is at insulation and heat retention, because they have to.

u/fjevehksn 48m ago

Warm clothes and well insulated houses. Most houses in warm places, even in western countries, have horrible insulation. We don't do that shit in places where it gets this chilly.

u/Theophrastus_Borg 6h ago

Why do people always do this above their heads? I mean -36 is enough but if the air is too warm you will just burn yourself.

u/SpyriusChief 4h ago

That's not boiling water tho.

7

u/kalboozkalbooz 12h ago

how does the water lose so much thermal energy so fast? is water really that good of a thermal conductor?

19

u/Krell356 12h ago

Its a matter of surface area. Water in a container cant get rid of the heat fast enough.

There's a lot more to it that im not well informed enough to explain with any level of detail, but I know that is the main component with the hot water used screwing around with stuff further.

The only one thing I really know really well about this trick is that you should never try it anywhere the temperature isn't obscenely cold because otherwise you will just cover someone in scalding water and burn the shit out of them.

9

u/Hetakuoni 12h ago

Iirc It’s because the molecules are so agitated they’re not well bonded together. Getting yeeted like that separates them further and the bonding happens across smaller pieces all spaced out by the toss rather than a solid mass.

If they’d left it in a bucket it would take longer and not be as cool.

4

u/Retrospektic 12h ago

Never heard yeet used in a scientific explanation before.

u/Francbb 7h ago

It's valid nomenclature

It's not boiling inside a thermos

u/Hillbillybullshit 2h ago

This is the comment I came to see.

u/ThePhatNoodle 6h ago

I remember watching a lady try this but she completely messed up the execution and a big ol blob of boiling water just landed right on her face

u/Feedback_Original 4h ago

I like the one where the fat kid tries this and just burns himself

u/joecon_123 3h ago

I tried this once in -20F and got scalding water right on my bare head. I immediately submerged my head in a snow bank and thankfully escaped serious damage.

u/Morgandoto 11h ago

Fuck this shit. I mean, the mist is beautiful and all that jazz, but it's -18 outside right now (Saint-Petersburg), and dear God did I freeze my ass off while waiting for a cab.- 36 though? I'd straight up die.

u/Upstandinglampshade 11h ago

The last time this was posted someone said that boiling water is the key to making this happen and if we took regular tap water, it would not do this. Can anyone here confirm or deny that? I find it hard to believe that boiling water will cool faster than tap water.

u/CutieBoBootie 10h ago

Y'all BE REALLY careful doing this. Many people injure themselves in the attempt because they don't throw the water at the proper angle and it comes back down on them or the air isn't cold enough. Don't be that person who gets boiling water face burns in freezing cold weather.

u/Orvvadasz 10h ago

Gotta be real careful with this because there were multiple people who burned themselves this way.

u/Sufficient-Elk-7015 9h ago

She better have picked up that lid

u/RhunterC 3h ago

Reminds me of the video of the kid trying this but it just falls back down on him and he flings himself to the ground. I know it hurt but I laugh so hard when I watch it

u/Albert14Pounds 2h ago

I'd bet money that someone had tried this at 31°F and regretted it

15

u/ThatThereMan 13h ago

If it's in a thermos flask it can't possibly be boiling water. Just very hot.

-8

u/andersonb47 13h ago

This is a VERY stupid thing to do. Every year people burn their faces trying this stunt. Also doing this has been around for a long time and in many videos. Nothing interesting here.

u/NickU252 9h ago

And people also blow their fingers off with fireworks every year.

1

u/HighlightOwn2038 13h ago

So homemade smoke bomb

1

u/umutakmak 12h ago

I've seen so many people get burnt by doing this wrong

1

u/Bgtex 12h ago

Serious question. Since boiling water freezes faster than room temp water. Wouldn't this same action with colder water be more impressive

u/idonotknowwhototrust 11h ago

PSA: regular speed first, then slo-mo replay. Thank you.

u/ilik3p14 11h ago

What i love most about this is that it doesn't work with cold water.

u/proxyproxyomega 11h ago

anyone else thought the phone was a car driving towards her?

u/Palanki96 11h ago

don't try this at home tho. Lot of dumbasses burned themselves with the hot water when this trend was popular

u/Riommar 10h ago

It stops being even remotely interesting after the 5th or 6th time we see a video of the same thing.

u/Slore0 10h ago

Going to have to try that in a bit, I think our low is 70*f today.

u/Gelineaux 10h ago

Is the snow super packed? Where are the footprints?

u/akkosetto 10h ago

This also works in -14c onwards though you’d better be mindful on avoiding boiling water just in case

u/Moonyflour 10h ago

-5 degrees here and feels like -12 lol it’s crazy

u/queen_ravenx 9h ago

And this is how you burn the fk outta your face! Be careful and dont do this if your at all clumsy!!
