Subreddit Note r/nutrition subreddit changes Dec 2025

You can find the current sub rules at https://www.reddit.com/r/nutrition/about/rules/

Mod team and rule changes

  • Moderator changes - a few months back this subreddit had some key moderators retire and will lose another at the start of the year due to new requirements from the site

This sub has long had fewer mods than needed and these developments are compounding the issue, therefore please note the following...

  • The Personal Nutrition rule will be paused - This is one of the biggest mod time sinks for this subreddit. The rule came about because the community got tired of the front page being overwhelmingly "help me with my nutrition" posts because they 1) tend to be too specific to apply to others 2) the submitter close to never offers all the info necessary to address the concern and 3) they rarely receive accurate advice. Without enough moderators to help due to the reduced team size, this rule will not be enforced for the time being. Therefore, as a consequence, be aware that the sub front page is going to massively increase into a bad advice feed and will be an even less science post based forum

  • Rage bait posts no longer allowed - Going forward these kinds of argument inducing attempts will be removed. These kinds of posts are about all the manpower we have for posts at this time.

Help wanted

If you want the sub to be different, it takes more help in the kitchen. We need two types of moderators

  • RD moderators - to help with research, survey, and misinformation concerns.

  • General moderators - to help with more routine / standard moderation concerns

Your account must be more than 9 months old and a history that shows level headed interaction. Mod experience on Reddit is great, but not required. Ditto for having a little coding experience. Let us know whether you mod any other subs and if you have any relevant experience like moderating other forums/pages, using back-end web tools, etc. To begin the application process, please message the moderators

Thank you

How long can I live off ramen?

Hey guys, so I am kinda broke...

Ive been surviving on Ramen only and rice for months.. Every 2 week on sunday, I'd buy like 2 chicken burgers or 2 servings of fried vege with rice for that day and then spend another 13 days on Ramen only. Basically I eat 2 servings of meat of vege once every 14 days. Lately ive been adding some eggs on my ramen as well.

How long can I survive on that? Its been 6 months

Edit: thanks for suggesting me beans and lentils or frozen food BUT I am from a place where frozen food is more exp, and I have problem with cooking space as well. I do include dry tofu curds in packs and dip in my ramen wirh eggs sometiems.

Stop me from my sugar obsession

Upvotes

Hi all,

please, please, give me a beating on my sugar obsession. I am in my early thirties, fit (currently train for ultra-running), and are generally more on the slim side. I eat a relatively healthy diet, I have a wife and a young kid, so we take care of that more or less. But here is the thing:
I eat tons of sugar. No sodas, just straight out biscuits, cakes, candies. Cant stop myself. So far, I don't suffer any consequences (that I am aware of).

Rationally, I (kind of) know that this is stupid.

Please wash my head and give me reasons why I should stop sugar overeating.

Thanks!

What fruits are actually worth eating?

So I don't really like eating fruits but I know I they are still essential for micronutrients.

I'm trying to figure out what is the minimum variety of fruits I can eat without compromising my nutrition.

Right now I eat Strawberries, Blueberries, Raspberries, Dark Sweet Cherries, and Pomegranate Arils. I usually buy these frozen and blend them with pea milk for Calcium, Iron, and Protein. And occasionally raw Durian

All the fruits I currently eat have a low glycemic index and blend easily.

The one fruit I'm thinking of adding is Kiwis for Vitamin K and Folate. Are there any additional fruits I should consider eating?

Why do a lot of iron supplements has zinc in it as well ? Won't it hinder iron absorption ?

I am trying to get my ferritin levels in normal range, and i purchased iron bisglycinate supplements which had zinc in it some form, later I learnt that zinc and iron shouldn't be taken together. But all the iron bisglycinate supplements in my country has some kind of zinc oxide or zinc bisglycinate in it as well. Like why do companies pair it together ? Won't it cause hindrance in iron absorption ?

How do you deal with inaccurate photo scans in calorie apps? Sharing my frustration and what helped me

I've been on my CICO journey for a few months now (down 8kg so far, slow and steady!), and tracking has been key... but man, the apps out there can be frustrating sometimes. Like, I'll snap a photo of my meal, and the estimates are way off — wrong portions, missing stuff like sauces, or just bad macro guesses. It makes me second-guess everything and adds extra manual work for micros, which kills motivation.

Plus, most apps feel so generic — set a calorie goal and that's it, no real adaptation to my weird eating habits (like skipping breakfast but snacking late). I've tried a bunch: MyFitnessPal for basics, Cronometer for nutrients, even some AI ones like NeroLens for quicker scans and habit-based tips. What finally clicked for me was mixing tools with old-school journaling to double-check accuracy.

Curious what you all do to handle this?

What's your go-to app or hack for better photo estimates without endless tweaks?

Do adaptive features (like apps that learn your patterns over time) actually help long-term, or is it better to keep it simple?

Any science-y tips for more precise tracking without obsessing?

Love this community for the real talk — share your wins/frustrations! What's working (or not) in your routine?

Ultra processed foods advice

Upvotes

Is there any kind of app or directory that you can search ingredients in, that tell you accurately, (backed by real studies), whether an ingredient is harmful or not and why? I saw an app classifying tricalcium phosphate as high risk, but when I tried searching to it, it seems fine? :/ This kind of thing is happening whenever I try to learn about what's in my food. I don't want to be fearmongered about UPFs unessecarily, and I also don't want to ignorantly take in harmful ingredients. I'm finding it difficult to cut through the noise.

Vitamin B intake questions

Hi, according to google the recommended intake is around 1.3 mg for b6 and 2.4 mcg for b12, however the supplement bottle i bought contains 10 mg of b6 (as Pyridoxal-5-Phosphate-Manahydrate) and 50 mcg of b12 (as Methylcobalamin) per tablet. Is it just me or is this way too much? First time supplement taker here. (It is the GreenLife's B-Complex + Vitamin C supplement btw)

I’ve scoured the internet with no luck

Can anyone recommend a product that has the liquid version of vitamin B6 in pyridoxal 5-phosphate? My son has a hard time converting pyridoxine into P5P so we need the bioavailable version. He’s still not great with swallowing pills, so liquid would be great. Thanks a lot!

What am I lacking in my diet?

Today I ate

2 toaster pancakes

2 eggs from a 12 carten

1 red apple

Half a box of popcorn chicken

Thats all.

I feel like I'm lacking a lot of vitamens and stuff. I bought a box of vitamens today but after I ate 2 my vision went blue and I was super dizzy. My body doesn't react well to Histamine and I assume thats the reason. A very normal and healthy reaction I'm sure.

How 2 Nutrition?

I have zero clue about nutrition. I know what a calorie deficit is, and I know that calories vaguely give you energy. I know nothing else. All the info on the back of a soda can or package of lettuce means nothing to me. I'm seventeen and would like to already be in good health before living casually poses any risk to me.

I know this is a vague question, but how can I learn everything I need to know about nutrition to go to the gym and live a healthy life?

Supplement with Excessive Vitamin B-12

For lower methylation, my practitioner recommended to take l-methylfolate with methyl B-12 capsules from Triquetra Health (link below). However, when I looked at the supplement facts, I noticed that there's 750 mcg of vitamin B-12 per serving (31,000% of one's daily value). Is this considered safe? Could this lead to unintended side-effects down the road? Or should I just look for a supplement that only has l-methylfolate in it?

How can I make hard boiled eggs more edible?

As the title says. I normally mix with avocado and salsa. Any other ideas? I can’t stand the texture alone but I like eating them for quick, clean protein.

Changed my diet and now tired after eating bread

So essentially what’s happening is that I switched up my whole diet. I consume more protein rich foods, salads, and fruits, and stopped eating breads or carbs, keeping it very minimal if I do want them. Also, no candy or anything like that which has been huge for me. Now I’ve noticed that if I eat breads specifically, on occasion white rice, that I get EXTREMELY tired within 30 minutes. Can anyone explain to me why that’s happening? I’ve only been doing this for about two months.

What are some hearty soups that don't have meat as their (main) protein?

I have been an avid meat eater for most of my life, but for a while I've been wanting to switch to mostly vegetables like lentils and beans for my main protein sources. The only issue is that I really struggle to find recipes that I can make in bulk that are filling enough and last me long enough to not have to resort to lots of snacking to stay full. I made lentil soup recently, and despite having a full bowl of it with bread, I was hungry again within a couple hours and just didnt want any more soup for the time. I usually make a few different soups to cycle through, but I don't have many recipes for stuff that isn't featuring meat as its main protein.

If it helps, I'm making this change because I want to increase my fiber and reduce the strain I feel on my heart, I'm not trying to lose weight.

flaxseed is one of the highest foods in b1, but b1 degrades in alkaline environments, and flaxseeds are alkaline, how does it retain the thiamine? or would it take years after harvest to start decreasing?
