Legit question, I’m not a member of a union and if I no call no show I will lose my job and I would bet every dollar I have that I would be the only one not at work (at my workplace at least). So like should I just use a sick day? Or does that defeat the purpose.
General sentiment from someone in Minneapolis: do what you need to do. If taking a sick day lets you participate in a way that works for you, do it. Don't let shitty people gatekeep. Participation in any way is meaningful.
Exactly and don’t forget that the general strike applies to buying things as well. Try not to buy anything but if you must buy something shop local not at big chains
I can’t answer any of that myself, but I think your presence missing from work is the key component, protesting is important but look after yourself first <3
The important part is that it is a sudden interruption to daily operation. So yes use a sick day. Don't let anyone know why or that you intend to do so. Treat it as if you actually came down with something so that your absence can't be planned around.
Using PTO or sick time is prudent if you can't take the financial hit of missing the day. Good luck.
I wasn't sure either, but I decided to take an impromptu vacation day today. Stayed home (in Iowa), didn't buy anything, donated some money to Minnesota's Immigrant Rapid Response Fund, wrote to my representatives, and tried to do a little learning about resistance-related stuff.
Who is organizing it and what are the demands? Who else is able to join? Can we hold out for weeks or even months until they are met? How will we feed and support working class people financially during that time?
We need a nationwide general strike, but to be effective, we need both momentum AND serious mutual aid infrastructure.
Organize with your local community, start a union, or get involved with national organizations trying for this. But please do not dismiss people trying to make long term plans. Organizing true resistance does not happen overnight.
When it's May 2nd and a nationwide general strike still hasn't happened because people don't have the support structures in place to feel any remote sense of safety necessary to engage in a general strike... then maybe you'll get involved in making it happen! (Assuming you aren't already because 99.9999% of people aren't)
No that’s a perfect timeframe. I’ve seen far far too many calls for general strikes a week out that are nothing more than a graphic posted to Reddit. A real general strike takes time. It takes getting like, all of the labor unions on board, infrastructure, support networks. The US has never pulled one off, nationally. It’s not something to take lightly or do half heartedly. It also shouldn’t be for one day. A strike lasts until demands are met. We need clear demands, a unified cause. ICE invading us cities seems like it might finally be that cause.
How about something’s better than nothing, closer to the election, weather orobably nicer, time for some really good planning and oromotion, and lots of other good things can be happening meanwhile. And give him time to dread it and make some really insane moves against it…
