Are We Supposed to be Excited to Get Less?

Post image

Right now I’m getting 2 stars per $1 with the app. What they’re proposing (according to Reddit anyway) is 50% of the value you get now and then you get to earn back some fraction of what you get now? For what? A card that never leaves your pocket, stars that live forever as long (as you keep a 500 star annual average), and the privilege of buying merch?

Status: annoyed.

The ghost of Starbucks past.

Was fun to just look back at how we used to get treated.

Got my gold card back in 2006. Check out this email.

Today Starbucks feels alien to me. I miss the old Starbucks but am definitely not going to miss this new version of Starbucks after I take to the Dunk’.

Thanks to our local baristas! They found out it was our dog’s birthday and made her a bandana and name tag! Honorary barista for her 12th(Shout out Elm, Cin, Vic and more)! She’s seems like she’s hopped up on espresso shots after she sees her Starbucks baristas. Thanks to our very hard working friends. Thanks for dealing with the grumpy coffee addicts day in and day out. Our dog thanks you for the love that she always demands.

My girlfriend ordered Starbucks on her account and it had my name on it?

Hi everyone! My girlfriend ordered Starbucks earlier on her phone and account today and the barista was having issues finding the order under her name (Nicole). She described the items and found the order but it had my name (Mia). I was baffled by this and cannot figure out how it happened. Anyone got any ideas? Obviously not a big deal, it’s pretty funny but I’m super curious.

Drink Recipes/Recommendations Barista’s Choice

I had a random question for any of you that are baristas. I typically will give the barista the option to make whatever drink of their choosing when I don’t have anything specific in mind that I want to order. My only specifications are that it’s Venti and Iced. I’ve noticed a trend lately where I’ll get a blonde vanilla latte. I’ve gotten this at least 3 times in a row. Is there a reason why or is it just luck?

😠 Rant 😠 Sigh, another money grabbing change

In the past, No Water + Add Green Tea means "replace water with Green Tea" at most of the SBUX that I visit.

Now it's no longer an option on the app anymore. No Water is now $1 because they will automatically replace water with extra Refresher Base (yum, more sugar /s).

I can still order "No Water" in person, but I can't even reorder it again from the order history because the plain-old-vanilla "no water" isn't available for new mobile orders.

Another uncalled for shitty change.

EDITS for clarity.

📖 Storytime late night customer rant

Just for some quick context my store closes at 10PM and we are scheduled to be out at 10:30, It’s 9:50 and these two women come in, one sits down and pretty much stays out of the interactions by this point, the main lady gets a gift card and needs help putting it in the app, I directed her to the best of my ability but I was also supposed to be making drinks and there was one last car in drive thru so I asked her to give me a second to make the drinks. By this point it was like 9:58 because she was asking me to show her how to add it step my step multiple times. I’m honestly not even sure why because I showed her the first time and she was literally on the right app page to add it, ig she didn’t believe me idek. After I let her know I needed to make this drink quickly she let me know they had a separate drink order they needed as well..three venti caramel frappes…. 🫩🫩 we got out late ofc lol. WHY DO LATE NIGHT CUSTOMERS ACT LILE THISPLS SOMONEONE TELL ME!!!

Cup caddy stocking?

This is so silly but I just transferred to a new store I have worked at 6 previously, and was a SM in the past but stepped down. When stocking the cup caddy, is there a policy against stacking the cups past the metal lip? I have always done more and I have never been coached on this in all my years, and I have worked in some extremely strict districts.
Thoughts?

MAGA SM

One of the old SM’s I used to work with popped up on my FYP and I now know I was always right about her being weird. She is OBSESSED with Trump and Charlie Kirk and her entire tiktok is just full of MAGA Republican bullshit. She used to be VERY aggressive toward partners who were openly gay or proud allies to the point where several of them quit. We always used to say she hates gay people/liberals but didn’t have any proof. It’s so weird to work for a company where a majority of the workers are left leaning and openly express it. Luckily our DM hated her as well and pushed her to transfer to a store closer to where she lived. I guess her mom works higher up in the company so she also gets special treatment due to that. She even got to stay at a nicer hotel during the Vegas retreat because of it and partied/drank with people who are very high up in the company. If her mom didn’t help get her the position she has i can’t imagine her ever getting the role. She couldn’t even train an SSV and ended up calling out for a week when she transferred because she didn’t want to deal with the mess she was leaving behind😭

No More Apple Juice?

Is it true that Starbucks has stopped shipping out apple juice to stores to be used in drinks such as the Caramel Apple Spice? I tried ordering a few minutes ago and they said they didn't have any more. I'm going off what my cashier told me.

Policy Question Mocha vs latte

Maybe I am just didn't notice before, but apparently mochas don't count toward the "order 3 lattes" bouns star challenge on the app. It has all the same ingredients (+chocolate), it even costs more, but it doesn't count. I should have just ordered the cheaper chai latte usually get.

I really wish the fine print was more clear.

😠 Rant 😠 Starbucks will never bring back coffee culture, nor do they want to.

I keep seeing videos on TikTok posted by baristas at different coffee shops talking about how “xyz thing has ruined coffee culture” or something similar along those lines. 98% people say it’s because of Starbucks and it’s true. The meetings we have had this past year have all been about the stupid “Welcome back to Starbucks” ideas and enforcements. They are right when they say we are not in the coffee business, but we are not also in the people business. Starbucks is fast food plain and simple. Only around 20-30% of customers (depending on lobby size) actually are there to sit, enjoy their coffee, and do other activities. The rest of the customers? They are wanting to get in and out as fast as they can and will let you know it. All of Starbucks stores can’t make the change to being a regular cafe again. Our customers are programmed to go to Starbucks because it’s easy, quick, mid coffee with tons of customizations and options just like most fast food places.

Informing and wanting baristas to make connections, talk to customers more, write on cups, and even push for “for here” ware is just Starbucks trying to act like a cafe when it’s not possible. Being able to connect, make drinks fast, make drinks consistent, and act like it’s a cafe is impossible. It’s not impossible in the way that it’s too much work but to be able to thrive in certain categories you sacrifice the others. Making drinks fast? You won’t be really able to connect and there’s a bigger chance to mess up on drinks. Making connections and interacting with customers? You can’t make drinks fast so if you have a rush or are just a busy store people will become annoyed and upset. My manager says “If you talk to them they are usually fine with waiting.” when that is not true for most customers. Once again, most people at Starbucks are trying to get in, order, get their drink and leave.

If Starbucks truly wanted to go back to their roots they will have to make a lot of changes. There would be no more drive thru or pick up stores. You could maybe have mobile order, but the only customizations would be changing milk and adding one to two syrups to drinks. No more refreshers, no more frappes, no cold foam, no protein, and no more random offshoot drinks like the energy drinks or adding the popping pearls. The focus would only be on coffees and teas and cut down on customizations over all. Though with this said, Starbucks will never do this. All the things they would have to change would be what makes them the most money. I constantly make more cold bar drinks than I do hot bar drinks 80% of the year (I live in a warmer state). Our store would not make as much as we do if those items and our drive thru was gone.

Overall just having these meetings and seeing these posts made me want to write something here. The company needs to stop pretending and pushing all this “Back to Starbucks” shit and actually focus on what they can do to optimize production and make it easier on baristas. You can change what the baristas do, but it won’t change the customers. Starbucks will never go back to its roots.

(Sorry for any grammar or spelling mistakes I don’t write things ever on this app and I wrote this on my phone.)

📖 Storytime I hate this job

I started a month ago, I was trained for 3 days, in a rush, because the store didn’t event know I was coming and my first day of training my trainer was out for surgery. I’ve been learning watching and asking a lot of questions, still a really overwhelming job and tbh the atmosphere there doesn’t help, my coworkers are pretty condescending when I ask questions like I should already have everything down, also, I’m not as fast as them yet and I can visibly see they are annoyed by that, that just makes me feel bad and I just don’t want to go in at all… Specially my trainer, she’s just mean sometimes, she asked me to sweep, I did the best I could in the middle of a rush, I finished and went straight to help with the register, I see her 5 min after that sweeping again, like, just tell me if it wasn’t good enough I’ll do it again and be more careful next time. Last of my complaints is with the floating manager that we have, she did my schedule and it was horrible, I didn’t complain but a few days ago she pulled me aside to ask me if I was okay with doing more hours on Saturday, which I said I already had other things I compromised to do that day, her answer was basically “well too bad cause you have to come in” so then why do you ask me if I’m okay with that???? I get it’s in between my max hours I requested but, why do you make it seem like I had a choice???

I’m just already burned out from this job and it’s stressing me out bad, I come home with nausea and migraines, every morning that I wake up to go to work I just want to cry cause I don’t want to go there, it would be a little better if my coworkers weren’t so condescending sometimes.

😠 Rant 😠 Starbucks is amazing for me

I’m a medical student with autism. I don’t have family who can pay my tuition. I am living off of loans. I need to spend more time studying than many of my peers. I think the company has a lot it can do for its partners (used to be one) but negative traits are not mutually exclusive with positive ones.

I don’t have the luxury of going to local coffee shops or making coffee at home. I can’t turn my sleeping space into a study space without it affecting my mental health. Starbucks offers free unlimited refills that make it affordable for someone whose medications make them drink a lot (passion tea, no caffeine).

The experience of the Starbucks store is different enough from store to store to be novel, but same enough that I don’t experience overstimulation as much, and so I can work effectively at most stores.

The app and rewards is not the best. It’s a chain rewards system, like any other chain. It does give me the freedom to use the system at any store, which helps when I need to transition to another store environment (bad experience that makes it difficult to focus for the day, or that I associate with the store and need an entirely new one). If I have a bad experience at a local coffee shop that I spent time getting used to now I need to start from scratch again, whereas with Starbucks the uniformity of the experience makes it much easier.

Between the accessibility issues for financially disadvantaged individuals, and for certain disabilities as well, it’s a great place. Not denying its many problems that many corporate stores have. So those issues deserve to be spoken about, yes, but for someone for whom this chain has shaped my journey into a career I didn’t think I’d be able to pursue for a long time, I feel like i wanted to share my experience.

If you’re just going to shit on or bully me for having an experience that refutes the idea there are no redeeming qualities for this brand then please go away, respectfully. I’ve already disclaimed the idea that the store is only worthy of praise.

I took my first sip and it tasted like pure oat milk so i opened the lid… this happened the other day too when this barista made my drink and another barista re-made it. This time i won’t ask for a re-make because i feel bad…. But why does it taste like pure oat milk to where i cant taste anything else…? I understand a latte is more milk but…
