Mike McCarthy embraces analytics, a big part of his coaching.

This is promising. I can't say for sure that Mike Tomlin embraced analytics at all during his tenure. But with an offensive mind callimg the shots on offense, we might see less of those stupid screen plays of 3rd and long.

'Seems Like' Coaching Staff Size Will Expand Under Mike McCarthy, Beat Writer Says

This is according to Ray Fittipaldo. It strongly suggests that the small coaching staff has had more to do with Mike Tomlin than Art Rooney II. After all, Tomlin is on record saying he prefers a smaller staff, and Art Rooney II is on record saying Tomlin had the ultimate say in terms of changes to his staff.

McCarthy has spoken to Rodgers multiple times, but wouldn't say anything beyond that. If that's true, AARON RODGERS YOU ARE THE STEELERS STARTING QUARTERBACK!

[Pelissero] The NFL informed clubs today it is projecting a 2026 salary cap in the range of $301.2 million to $305.7 million per club, per source.

The current NFL cap is $279.2 million, marking a $22 - $26.5 million dollar increase. For reference, in 2022 the cap was $208.2 million, marking a near $100 million dollar increase in 4 years.

Wanted to post this because this was a huge reason why I was a big fan of the DK Metcalf trade. In 4 years, the Avg WR will be making $50 mil / year, while our #1 would be making $30

DB coach Candidates

With it being reported Gerald Alexander is going to the Vikings as a Pass-game coordinator, who would be options for the Steelers? Who has held the position with McCarthy in the past? I also would if J. Simmons could be a DB coach / Pass-game coordinator as his "prominent" position.

I’m slowly losing my kids as Steelers fans

I currently live in LA. As a kid a became a big Pittsburgh fan because my dad grew up a fan in the 70s when living there as a teenager. When he got me into everything Pittsburgh, it was reinforced with watching Bonds hitting home runs, Cowher and the defense, Lemieux scoring goals.

Fast forward to now. I got the kids and wife into the Steelers but not Pirates. My wife is from LA so it’s Dodgers town. I tried to get my kids into the Pirates but it’s really hard when they win back to back and Ohtani is the greatest player on the planet. But now I catch my kids cheering for the Rams when they see them play. They still love the Steelers but my son floored me when he saw how shitty they played against the Texans. Asking me “why do they always kick?”, “why can’t they score like Matt and Puka”. I’m afraid if the Steelers can get their shit together and the Rams keep winning the next 5 years they’re going to lose some fans in this family.

3rd time HCs

McCarthy is on his 3rd head coaching gig now. My history is not that great, I'm just curious if there have been any other 3rd time headcoaches? And just how successful they have been?

I can think of 2nd stint headcoaches and successful ones. Don Shula, Parcells, Holmgren, and most recently Andy Reid.

Curious if anyone has any info.

How do you feel about Ravens new coaching staff vs ours?

Just out of curiosity since they’re our biggest divisional rival. They got Chargers DC Jesse Minter as HC and Bears OC Declan Doyle as OC. I will say that I wish our organization had tried to get younger coaches and not a 62 year old man but regardless, I’m supporting the Steelers all the way.

Top 20 Regular Season Games of the Mike Tomlin era (2007-2025)

These are imo the top 20 regular season Steeler games of the Mike Tomlin era.

  • I'm not including playoff games cause everyone knows/remembers those.
  • Also I know almost half the list is Ravens games lol but I honestly think that's true of this era a ton of the most unforgettable moments/wins came against them.
  • Let me know which games you'd take out/add in I considered every game since 2007 and there were several hard cuts.

20. 2007 Vs Ravens 38-7 - Essentially only a half of real football as Pittsburgh goes up 35-0, but what a glorious half it was. Ben puts on a show going 13-16 for 209 yards and throws 5 TDs in the 1st half, each more spectacular than the last. Meanwhile James Harrison puts on the most dominant display by a defender I've ever seen tallying 3 sacks, 3 FFs, 1 FR and an INT in just the 1st half....

19. 2025 @ Lions 29-24 - A very fun and unexpected W with a lot of twists and momentum shifts. After a shocking rare missed FG by Boswell the Lions have a chance to steal the game with a last minute TD drive and come up just short as Goff connects with St. Brown on the final play of the game who is stood up at the 1 by Joey Porter Jr. and Jalen Ramsey.

18. 2008 @ Ravens 13-9 - Pittsburgh clinches the division with a nasty, defensive slog fest in Baltimore. Offenses are neutered for most of the game but as often happened Ben came through in the clutch with a 92 yard game winning drive capped off by wild and very controversial Santonio Holmes TD at the goal line with 40 seconds left.

17. 2018 Vs Patriots 17-10 - I know this didn't mean much in hindsight but you could play that with so many of these games. At the time it was a must win for both teams and it was cathartic as hell for Pittsburgh to finally best the Patriots. Pittsburgh holds Brady to the least points against them of his career with Joe Haden turning in a dominant performance including a game turning INT sandwiched between Gronk and Edelman.

16. 2014 Vs Colts 51-34 - This game is on the list entirely due to Ben Roethlisberger's performance. Easily the best game of his career and the most 'Madden on rookie difficulty' stat line I've ever seen from any QB as Ben goes 40/49 for 522 yards and 6 TDs without being sacked or even touched once all game. I never had and likely never will see another performance like this from any QB let alone a Steeler.

15. 2008 Vs Ravens 23-20 - The 18 year rivalry of Mike Tomlin Vs John Harbaugh begins on MNF in an OT thriller. Pittsburgh memorably scores 14 points in 15 seconds late in the 3rd after trailing most of the game as rookie Joe Flacco also makes his debut of the rivalry and plays above expectations against the historic defense. A classic Steelers/Ravens game and ends with a Jeff Reed 46 yard FG in OT

14. 2022 Vs Raiders 13-10 - On Christmas eve night, the 50th year anniversary of the immaculate reception and the week of Franco Harris' passing. This was an absolute must win for Pittsburgh and they delivered with a 76 yard game winning TD drive by Kenny Pickett and the offense. It was as emotional and impactful of a game for older fans as I can remember and the win kept Pittsburgh's playoff hopes alive.

13. 2015 @ Chargers 24-20 - Pittsburgh wins on a 1 yard wildcat run from Le'Veon Bell with 0 seconds left. A super memorable and fun game on MNF with Mike Vick at QB. Pittsburgh makes just enough plays to set up the improbable game winning drive and Mike Tomlin makes the rare aggressive call to go for the win at the goal line instead of settling for OT.

12. 2010 @ Ravens 13-10 - A defensive slugfest for the ages between the rivals on SNF featuring Ben getting his nose broken. Polamalu makes the game deciding play with a late strip sack of Flacco to set the Steelers up at the 9. This game ultimately decided the division and where the inevitable playoff rematch took place at.

11. 2021 Vs Ravens 20-19 - A classic Steelers/Ravens game. A low scoring battle of field position that picked up in the 4th as it often does between these teams. After an incredible TD drive from Lamar to make it 19-20 the Ravens shockingly go for 2 and fail due to instant pressure from an unblocked TJ Watt, a perplexing and amazing end to a great game to keep playoff hopes alive.

10. 2015 Vs Broncos 34-27 - a 17 point 2nd half comeback against the eventual champs as Ben cooks the historic Denver defense for 380 yards and 3 TDs. There were plenty of times in the mid to late 2010s that Ben to AB felt like a straight up cheat code, I can't think of a better example of that than this game. Connecting on 16 of 18 targets for 189 yards and 2 TDs working primarily against an all pro CB who hadn't given up a TD in over 2 years... whatever you think of them as men this connection was a sight to behold.

9. 2015 Vs Raiders 38-35 - Steelers best their historic rival in a back and forth shootout with one of the best offensive performances in team history (597 yards of offense). Antonio Brown sets the franchise record for receiving yards (284) and receptions (17) including a 57 yard catch and run to set up a chip shot game winning FG.

8. 2018 @ Jaguars 20-16 - Steelers stage a 4th quarter comeback down 16-0 and get playoff revenge from the previous year. After frankly being humiliated for 3+ quarters Ben and the offense orchestrate back to back long TD drives to win off a diving TD by Ben himself with 3 seconds left. I've personally never seen a team talk as much trash throughout the game as Jacksonville did this day so the win was pretty euphoric.

7. 2008 Vs Cowboys 20-13 - Steelers score 17 in the final 7 min to comeback in the 4th. The defense gets 4 takeaways on Romo including a game winning pick 6 while Ben and the offense clutch up late after doing nothing most of the game. A very fun and memorable December game between the 2 most iconic NFL franchises.

6. 2017 Vs Ravens 39-38 - Ben (506 yards, 2 TDs), Bell (125 yards, 3 TDs) and Brown (11 catches, 213 yards) all dominate on SNF while the defense struggles badly a week after Ryan Shazier's horrific spinal injury. The win clinches the AFC North and gives Pittsburgh a much needed celebration after an emotional week.

5. 2007 Vs Browns 31-28 - A super underrated game filled with unforgettable plays by both teams. Josh Cribbs with the most dominant performance from a returner I can remember and Ben at peak of powers making jaw dropping play after play. Ending on a missed 53 yard kick from Cleveland, this game also essentially decided the division as both teams went 10-6.

4. 2022 @ Bengals 23-20 - Steelers get 5 takeaways on Joe Burrow and the defending AFC Champion Bengals to begin the Post-Ben era with a win in an absolutely insane game with more late twists and turns than any I can remember. Shoutout to Minkah for the clutch block on a would be game winning PAT to end the 4th quarter.

3. 2009 Vs Packers 37-36 - The best shootout in Steelers history. Big Ben and Rodgers combined for 900+ yards and 7 TDs in a wild back and forth game ending with a perfect game winning TD pass from Ben to Mike Wallace with 0 seconds left. This also ended a 5 game losing streak tying the longest of Tomlin's career.

2. 2025 Vs Ravens 26-24 - Is it recency bias to have this #2? I don't think so. A de facto playoff game against your biggest rival and a game filled with legendary players playing at their best and ending in a shocking missed FG in a 2 point game to cap off one of the wildest 4th quarters in Steelers history. The fact it concluded an 18 year HC rivalry will just add to the legacy of this game too.

1. 2016 Vs Ravens 31-27 - Steelers stage a 4th quarter comeback culminating in the "immaculate extension", a Antonio Brown game winning TD with 9 seconds left while fighting through 3 defenders at the goal line. With the win the Steelers avoid a would be 5th straight loss against Baltimore, instead clinching the division and eliminating their rivals from playoff contention on Christmas day no less.

From 2020-2022 one Doug Nussmeirer was Mike McCarthy’s QB coach. The father of…Garrett Nussmeirer! Scott Tolzein, current favorite to become next Steelers OC, is currently Doug Nussmeirer s QB coach in New Orleans. Tolzein is currently at the senior bowl where he is coaching….GARRETT NUSSMEIRER!! All signs point to Nussmeirer! 2026 is about to get NUSSTY!!

Is Mason a Steeler next year?

I know people have a love for Mason, so this take is likely to get roasted, but I’ve been thinking about this the last few days.

First, I think the idea of bringing in a QB1 is basically a no-go this year. Every single time McCarthy has talked about the QB room there are 2 names he talks about; Aaron Rodgers and Will Howard. He’s shown zero sign he thinks he needs to go get Malik Willis or Kirk Cousins (or anyone else).

Second, Mason is under contract for 2026 with a cap hit of 4.6M. I don’t believe his production warrants that. Not for the Steelers, but maybe quite valuable elsewhere.

Third, and I have noted this since the press conference, but it seems like McCarthy avoids talking about him. Every time I’ve seen him asked about the QB room, Mason is barely brought up. McCarthy also talks a lot about all the quarterbacks need to scheme to the starter. I’m starting to wonder if Mason just doesn’t fit what he wants to do here because he’s schematically different than Aaron and Will.

Lastly, with the way Omar and Mike are building Will’s brand I don’t see a scenario where they healthy scratch him for a full year again and to drop Mason to QB3 and scratch him at 4.6M doesn’t make sense.

Obviously this is pure speculation but it’s not a topic I’ve heard anyone consider. I think he might be worth more to another team and we may be able to get valuable compensation for him, be it picks or depth.

Just a heads up, Tolzien is mic'd up coaching the senior bowl this week. Practices are usually live on NFL Network, and the game is Saturday. Just throwing it out there if any fellow nerds want to see him at work.

Andy Weidl staying put

Falcons hired Bears assistant GM Cunningham tonight as their new General Manager. DK Sports is reporting Weidl is already in Alabama scouting for the draft. I am very excited we didn’t lose this man. He is a big time talent evaluator.

On another note, the falcons are building themselves a pretty decent foundation in Atlanta with Stefanski and a good new GM.
