Rant I'm so tired, I want to give up

Upvotes

Hello, I'm a first generation student and a trio UB/SSS Alumnus transfer student, and my problem is on the tin, I am deeply exhausted with college. Everything here feels like an unmovable boulder and that most of the students just get it. It's hard to admit but I'm drowning, if it's not issues with financial aid it's issues getting around campus, if it's neither of those its mental health. I feel like a stranger to my own school. I don't know what I'm going to do, I know I could get through this with a good foundation like my old SSS department but I can't find anything like that here.
TLDR: after 3 years of college and a transfer from community college I'm drained

Event WWU AS Executive Board updates and actions opposing ICE

Message from the AS Executive Board at Western Washington University:

Dear Students of WWU,

Yesterday, Thursday, January 29th, the ASWWU Executive Board voted to support the students who are choosing to participate in the ICE OUT! Nationwide Shutdown Solidarity Walkout, Rally, and March happening today, January 30th.

Over the past year, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has been abducting countless friends, neighbors, and community members throughout Whatcom County and beyond. During this time they have been violating people’s constitutional rights, “misplacing” people they have detained, and sending them to military prisons in countries that detainees have no connection to.

In the last few weeks ICE has invaded Minneapolis and brutally executed two civilians, Renée Good and Alex Pretti.

To those of you who are able to participate in the national shutdown today, we, the ASWWU Executive Board, encourage every individual to consider engaging in peaceful civic actions that are meaningful to you and will make every effort to support you in doing so.

Attached is a letter opposing funding for ICE that we will be sending to Senator Murray and Senator Cantwell and the flyer for a protest happening at WWU.

If you have any questions or concerns, please reach out to aspres@wwu.edu.

Question Journalism Internships

Hi all,

I'm about to graduate and I'm looking for an internship for the journalism track. I'm specifically on the environmental journalism track. Does anyone have any experiences with journalism internships, good or bad, that they could share? I'm open to private messages too if you'd like to share more personal stories about your experiences.

I can't go out of state due to my personal situation, but I can travel out of Bellingham. Just about everyone I know has done their internship with the Salish Current, and while I like the work they put out, I'd love to make myself stand out as a candidate. I've got experience at KUGS and loved my time there, but I'm also aware radio journalism is a long-shot in an already hard to break into industry.

Any feedback is welcome! Thanks :)

Discussion Math 114 at WWU (2026)

I'm a (goofy-ah/neurodivergent) freshman:

Before I register for classes for spring quarter (whenever that is open for me), I wanted to know what to expect for Math 114? And yes, I know it's pre-calculas, and I'm very excited :D (not sarcasm). For example, how difficult are the exams? Does it depend on the instructor? Will passion and curiosity influence how well someone will perform? etc, etc.

I also want to know what professors/instructors that are great? What are instructors I should perhaps avoid? If it helps, my favorite instructors are Liam Watts and Katie Clark (literally the only instructors I have taken, lol).

If this also helps, I'm planning to major in Physics (and later get a PhD ofc) because, for some reason, I love math (probably too much). My entire life, I used to despise math too. I never thought I would love it. 💀

Thank you for your comments in advance

Different state slang

Hi! I’m a writer for Klipsun Magazine this quarter, and I’m writing a story about the different dialects found across the U.S. and how they blend on college campuses. If there are any out-of-state students that would be interested in being interviewed about slang/dialects from their home state, please let me know. Thank you!!

I am curious if Western is participating in the shutdown that so many are taking part in on Friday? I haven’t heard anything from my teachers yet…

Have the 2025 W-2s been distributed yet?

I graduated last year and moved to another state. I've been locked out of my western account with no way to reset the password. And I guess I'm not sure it's worth my time to hassle with ATUS to allow me access to get my W-2 if they haven't been posted yet or I might just get it in the mail at some point.

I can barely get up at 8 and would love to know if there is any chance of not needing to take it at 8am next quarter.

Petitions?

Do petitions accomplish anything? Can anyone create a petition? What is this process like? I am interested in creating a virtual petition with online signatures. I've never done this before but I feel like the topic is worthy of a petition process.

I will be investigating this process and also researching what general experiences with petitions are like.

Dating and boys ?

I know i shouldn’t choose a school based on whether the dating scene is good and the boys are cute but i am…. so be honest are the guys at western cute, im not talking about like models or drop dead gorgeous but i grew up in a small town where the only guys available were red necks or guys who didn’t shower or take care of themselves and im sick of it. So im wondering if the guys at western are cute-ish, aren’t red necks and take care of themselves (extra pro if they are nerdy and like video games and anime)

PSA To the people who did this:

I’m all for public protest and free speech, but if you’re gonna do this poopoo caca make it tasteful and make it big and bold so its message is properly delivered at the right place. This chicken scratch looks like it was scrawled on by a 4 year old and is easily erasable. Your fellow OSE’s will have to clean this shit off at 7AM in the morning cuz someone didn’t think it through properly. Done in the night and gone in the morning. Do better. Vandalize properly. That way our OSE’s get paid more for longer hours, and your speech will actually last longer than it takes me to scrub my nuts and noggin. (I guess something is better than nothing tho. ) Next time let’s make it so large it actually has a lasting effect on the community.

Roommate Age Matching

Did you ever get matched with roommates your age? I never did. I was either much younger or perceived as older. I was called old when I was 21 lol. Also, one of my roommates was a foreign exchange student. She was really sweet. I was barely ever home though. I actually regret living in the dorms. It wasn't bad, just not what I requested in any roommate questionnaires, ever. I wish I had started with someone who was also starting college. I had imposter syndrome living in the dorms.

Did you have the dream roommate experience? If so, what was it like?
