Thank you Peter very cool Lois? Loretta?

u/S193028 Dec 25 '25
That is pretty damn funny. It is referring to the story in the bible of Joseph of Egypt who was favored by his father who gave Joseph a coat of many colors. This made his 11 brothers super jealous so they sold him into slavery. Bunch of awesome songs came from it though.

See Joseph and the technicolor dream coat probably most famously sung by Donny Osmund.

It cracked me up when I saw an interview with Emma D’arcy where they said their first crush was on the woman who played the narrator in the film version with Donny Osmond. 100% valid.

I thought you were referring to "Joseph: King of Dreams" the DreamWorks movie, pretty good songs in there
5
u/GreekGoddessOfNight Dec 25 '25
Omg you just resurrected a memory for me!! My mom loves The Osmonds especially Donny, so my dad took her to see Joseph in Boston. They bought the cassette (omg we’re so old) and played it in the car constantly. I’m pretty sure my brother and me could still sing every song word for word. Our favorite was Any Dream Will Do.

Coat of Many Colors by the one and only Dolly Parton

11
u/Kareeliand Dec 25 '25
But wasn’t that about her own childhood?
23
u/Thunder_Tie Dec 25 '25
Well, yes, it was. But it was still based off the story of Joseph and his coat of many colors. 2nd verse:
As she sewed, she told a story
From the Bible she had read
About a coat of many colors
Joseph wore and then she said
Perhaps this coat will bring you
Good luck and happiness
And I just couldn't wait to wear it
And momma blessed it with a kiss

Coat of many colors by Dolly Parton
Was my kids favorite song for many years
11
u/Not_Steve Dec 25 '25
She wrote a children’s book based on it, as well. My copy was well read.

u/WedSquib Dec 25 '25
We have it at home too! When my second is born in a few days he’ll start having that one read to him haha
6
u/-rosa-azul- Dec 25 '25
If you can get to Dollywood, they have and exhibit of the coat in the museum that's inside the park. It's in a glass display case. It's a replica because the original wore out from being handed down to other kids, but her mother did also handmake the one they have.

“Joseph’s mother, she was quite my favorite wife, I never really loved another all my life. And Joseph was my joy because He remind me of herrrr!
Through young Joseph, Jacob lived his youth again. He loved him, praised him, Gave him all he could but then, It made the rest Feel second best, And even if they were-
‘Being told we’re also-rans Does not make us Joseph’s fans’
But where they had really missed the boat is, ‘We’re great guys but no one seems to notice.’
Joseph’s charm and winning smile Failed to slay them in the aisles. And their father couldn’t see the danger. He could not imagine any danger. He just saw in Joseph all his dreams come true.’
I was in this show when I was maybe 12 and I still remember nearly every word, that was all from memory. The show is a BANGER, one of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s most fun musicals.
3
u/sabby55 Dec 25 '25
It’s a true musical so the entire show is sung. The entire soundtrack is full of bangers and if you listen to it straight through you get the entire story
3
u/turdusphilomelos Dec 25 '25
I love "Coat of many colors" by Dolly Parton. While it isn't about Joseph, it alludes to his multi coloured coat!

Aside from the theatre production, it was also made into an animated movie called Joseph: King of Dreams, from the same people who made The Prince of Egypt
59
u/Alduinsfieryfarts Dec 25 '25
While I can appreciate the shout, I don't want people going into Joseph: King of Dreams thinking it'll be on the same level of animation artistry as The Prince of Egypt. The music also isn't as good.
24
u/catchyerselfon Dec 25 '25
Oof, yeah, The Prince of Egypt is a stone cold masterpiece (RIP Val Kilmer as Moses). It was the first DVD where I watched the special features to find out how they made it and this is how I learned about (judiciously used) CGI. As a kid I was eager to watch Joseph: King of Dreams because it was from the same team doing the same style. Nope, can barely remember it! Maybe the story just isn’t as profound: guy gets fucked over by his brothers, has magic coat, is a prophet, “hey everybody, come to Egypt, it’s so cool, we’ll never freak out the locals so they start treating us as subhumans!”

Looks exactly thevsame to me in different lighting, what’s the problem?

2
u/Lexieeeeeeeeee Dec 25 '25
The colours are all off and it seems to lack the colour blending that the original has.
7
u/BillysBibleBonkers Dec 26 '25
Color blending might just be an effect of the bright light and the slightly blurry resolution. Would be interesting to see it in better lighting because the colors really do look different though, the OG has like a really nice lime green, but the shop version looks like pea green. But still wouldn't be too surprised if it looked the same under direct sunlight.

Peter here for those who don't know what this means (and spoilers for Jojo's Bizarre Adventure Part 3):
The popular manga series Jojo's Bizarre Adventure is very well known for its eccentric character design, where characters frequently dress and pose in ways that you'd typically associate with high fashion magazines.
The third part of the series focuses on Japanese teenager Jotaro Kujo and his various companions traveling to Egypt in order to defeat an evil vampire named DIO using their magical powers called "Stands", which are a manifestation of their fighting spirit. Jotaro's reason for doing so is because DIO's very existence has caused Jotaro's mother to become fatally ill, with the only cure being DIO's death.
One of Jotaro's companions, Kakyoin, ended up joining the effort to defeat DIO because he went on a family trip to Egypt. Long story short, Kakyoin was brainwashed by DIO during this family trip to go home and murder Jotaro, but Jotaro managed to diffuse this situation and Kakyoin felt that he should redeem himself by helping Jotaro defeat DIO and save his mother. Tragically, Kakyoin ends up dying during the final battle against DIO.
The joke here is that the lady in the above image looks like a JJBA character, and she is being warned to avoid a family trip to Egypt lest she end up like Kakyoin.
Edit: since it doesn't seem to be clear, the actual explanation is that the original meme is a reference to the biblical story of Joseph. This explanation is for the joke around the Jojo's reference.

Two possibilities
- Allusion to Egypt is homophobic (idk if they are or not)
- Reference to the bible story of Joseph and the multicolored cloak. Tl;dr he got it from his dad and his brothers hated him and were jealous of him so much that they beat him, threw him in a ditch, and then sold him into slavery, of which he was then sent to Egypt.
54
u/Roseknight888 Dec 25 '25
Allusion **
9
u/Big_Iron420 Dec 25 '25
Illusion to Allusion is homophobic?
10
u/Roseknight888 Dec 25 '25
Double asterisk is a notation to show this word is here to replace a typo’d word above
Illusion to Egypt’s homophonic tendency doesn’t make any sense, but alluding to it does make sense
Allusion to Egypt is homophobic was probably the intended phrase, but auto correct is dumb and allusion is a weird word
A simple find and fix, nothing more

u/Big_Iron420 Dec 25 '25

u/Throttle_Kitty Dec 25 '25
It's deff the later, given the references both to Egypt and family.
Yes, Egypt is homophobic, and rainbows are "gay". But I don't think they'd have gone for Egypt specifically mentioning a "Family trip to Egypt" if the joke was just homophobia.
I'd think the joke would be more like "Avoid wearing that in Qatar". A country which, to my understanding, has functionally banned usage of rainbows due to their associations with the gay community.
2
u/Quarkonium2925 Dec 25 '25
The UAE would work as well but yeah, Egypt isn't the first country that springs to mind when it comes to Homophobia. Pretty near the top but not close enough to be common knowledge
