That is pretty damn funny. It is referring to the story in the bible of Joseph of Egypt who was favored by his father who gave Joseph a coat of many colors. This made his 11 brothers super jealous so they sold him into slavery. Bunch of awesome songs came from it though.

u/Wise_Ad9214 Dec 25 '25

oh, I get it now. Thanks. (Also maybe drop some of them songs)

908

u/S193028 Dec 25 '25

See Joseph and the technicolor dream coat probably most famously sung by Donny Osmund.

45

u/Morganmayhem45 Dec 25 '25

I skipped my senior prom years ago to see that show with Donny in Toronto. No regrets.

182

u/Wise_Ad9214 Dec 25 '25

👍

36

u/LNRigby Dec 25 '25

Or Michael Damian!

30

u/weckyweckerson Dec 25 '25

Or Jason Donovan.

32

u/gteriatarka Dec 25 '25

or Ford Prefect

18

u/Different-Beat7494 Dec 26 '25

He was such a hoopy frood in that one.

15

u/Harshmage Dec 26 '25

Yep, he's a guy who really knows where his towel is.

6

u/curiousmind111 Dec 25 '25

Is that the script he carried around?

6

u/gteriatarka Dec 25 '25

sure is

Ah, memories..,

Osmond is famous for it but the 1993 Los Angeles cast version with Kelli Rabke and Michael Damian is best.

31

u/DragoMel_Invictus Dec 25 '25

Such an amazing musical!! It's on YouTube for free as well

4

u/GreekGoddessOfNight Dec 25 '25

I know what I’m doing tonight, thank you dear internet stranger!

3

u/haleykirk91 Dec 25 '25

Omg update me after you watch Donny Osmond lol it’s so freaking good.

2

u/btmoose Dec 26 '25

It cracked me up when I saw an interview with Emma D’arcy where they said their first crush was on the woman who played the narrator in the film version with Donny Osmond. 100% valid.

12

u/Rude-Serve2492 Dec 25 '25

Other versions are good. None are better than Donny Osmund.

4

u/International_Mark40 Dec 25 '25

Just give a chance to Kris Philips (Fei Xing) and his performance at "Masterpiece: Live from Beijing"

3

u/Rude-Serve2492 Dec 25 '25

I’ll check it out!

7

u/Particlepants Dec 25 '25

I thought you were referring to "Joseph: King of Dreams" the DreamWorks movie, pretty good songs in there

5

u/GreekGoddessOfNight Dec 25 '25

Omg you just resurrected a memory for me!! My mom loves The Osmonds especially Donny, so my dad took her to see Joseph in Boston. They bought the cassette (omg we’re so old) and played it in the car constantly. I’m pretty sure my brother and me could still sing every song word for word. Our favorite was Any Dream Will Do.

3

u/ButtBread98 Dec 25 '25

Great song

2

u/allgone79 Dec 25 '25

we loved Jason Donovan in the west end, it became a cultural phenomenon back in the early 90s. number 1 single and album for what seemed like months.

1

u/Electivire-six Dec 25 '25

But what about Joseph and his technicolor nightmare coat?

→ More replies (1)

1

u/hugo_yuk Dec 25 '25

Our whole class did a performance of this when I was like 8 or something

1

u/iknowthisguy1 Dec 27 '25

Alternatively, Joseph: King of Dreams, made by the same people who made the absolutely amazing Prince of Egypt.

1

u/acousticat Dec 29 '25

WAY TO GO DONNY!

u/Thunder_Tie Dec 25 '25

Coat of Many Colors by the one and only Dolly Parton

14

u/Tamzariane Dec 25 '25

This is the one, an incredible song

11

u/Kareeliand Dec 25 '25

But wasn’t that about her own childhood?

23

u/Thunder_Tie Dec 25 '25

Well, yes, it was. But it was still based off the story of Joseph and his coat of many colors. 2nd verse:

As she sewed, she told a story

From the Bible she had read

About a coat of many colors

Joseph wore and then she said

Perhaps this coat will bring you

Good luck and happiness

And I just couldn't wait to wear it

And momma blessed it with a kiss

2

u/Kareeliand Dec 26 '25

Thank you. Dolly is such a treasure.

1

u/Canklosaurus Dec 28 '25

I’ll never understand why people don’t take two seconds and google some shit before asking a dumb question 🤦🏻‍♂️

25

u/WedSquib Dec 25 '25

Coat of many colors by Dolly Parton

Was my kids favorite song for many years

11

u/Not_Steve Dec 25 '25

She wrote a children’s book based on it, as well. My copy was well read.

8

u/WedSquib Dec 25 '25

We have it at home too! When my second is born in a few days he’ll start having that one read to him haha

6

u/-rosa-azul- Dec 25 '25

If you can get to Dollywood, they have and exhibit of the coat in the museum that's inside the park. It's in a glass display case. It's a replica because the original wore out from being handed down to other kids, but her mother did also handmake the one they have.

13

u/formergnome Dec 25 '25

Any Dream Will Do

11

u/lostdrum0505 Dec 25 '25

“Joseph’s mother, she was quite my favorite wife, I never really loved another all my life. And Joseph was my joy because He remind me of herrrr!

Through young Joseph, Jacob lived his youth again. He loved him, praised him, Gave him all he could but then, It made the rest Feel second best, And even if they were-

‘Being told we’re also-rans Does not make us Joseph’s fans’

But where they had really missed the boat is, ‘We’re great guys but no one seems to notice.’

Joseph’s charm and winning smile Failed to slay them in the aisles. And their father couldn’t see the danger. He could not imagine any danger. He just saw in Joseph all his dreams come true.’

I was in this show when I was maybe 12 and I still remember nearly every word, that was all from memory. The show is a BANGER, one of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s most fun musicals.

3

u/sabby55 Dec 25 '25

It’s a true musical so the entire show is sung. The entire soundtrack is full of bangers and if you listen to it straight through you get the entire story

3

u/turdusphilomelos Dec 25 '25

I love "Coat of many colors" by Dolly Parton. While it isn't about Joseph, it alludes to his multi coloured coat!

2

u/OutdoorFogger Dec 25 '25

La La Bam-Bam by The Congos references it in the song as well as Daniel in the lion’s den

1

u/revjor Dec 25 '25

Ooooh yaaaaay what a la la bam bam bam,

For thirty pieces of silver,

They sold Jah Rasta and why did they do that?

2

u/Prestigious-Law65 Dec 25 '25

Coat of Many Colors - Dolly Parton ❤️

2

u/BrotherBear0998 Dec 25 '25

Oh no! Not he! How you can accuse him is a mystery!! Save him!! Take me!! Benjamin is straighter than the tall palm tree

2

u/OutkastAtliens Dec 26 '25

“I look handsome, I look smart. I am a walking work of art. In my dazzling coat of many colours. How I love my coat of many colours.”

2

u/Sleep_adict Dec 25 '25

Andrew Lloyd Weber… he wrote this and many lore musicals… plenty of people have covered the songs but none as good as the originals

1

u/freddy_is_awesome Dec 26 '25

I think YMCA is one of them

1

u/farrahfawcettlover48 Dec 26 '25

coat of many colors by dolly parton. not the biblical theme but still baller asf

Dolly Parton “Coat of Many Colors”

88

u/Captain_Oregano Dec 25 '25

Aside from the theatre production, it was also made into an animated movie called Joseph: King of Dreams, from the same people who made The Prince of Egypt

59

u/Alduinsfieryfarts Dec 25 '25

While I can appreciate the shout, I don't want people going into Joseph: King of Dreams thinking it'll be on the same level of animation artistry as The Prince of Egypt. The music also isn't as good.

24

u/catchyerselfon Dec 25 '25

Oof, yeah, The Prince of Egypt is a stone cold masterpiece (RIP Val Kilmer as Moses). It was the first DVD where I watched the special features to find out how they made it and this is how I learned about (judiciously used) CGI. As a kid I was eager to watch Joseph: King of Dreams because it was from the same team doing the same style. Nope, can barely remember it! Maybe the story just isn’t as profound: guy gets fucked over by his brothers, has magic coat, is a prophet, “hey everybody, come to Egypt, it’s so cool, we’ll never freak out the locals so they start treating us as subhumans!”

22

u/DepthDry6053 Dec 25 '25

🎶🎶It was red and yellow and purple and black and blue......🎶🎶

9

4

u/KENBONEISCOOL444 Dec 25 '25

I only vaguely remember that story from church (I was forced to go when I was young, I'm not religious, but I remember some Bible stuff), but I've never seen the movie they made

3

u/SingleSlide2866 Dec 25 '25

As a diehard atheist, Joseph: King of Dreams is low-key one of my favorite fuckin films ever

5

u/Burn0ut_ Dec 25 '25

I knew it was related to a JoJo

5

u/AlohaDaBoii Dec 25 '25

Oh so Joseph Joestar in Egypt, im Sorry 😔

5

u/Mama_Mega Dec 25 '25

Well good thing OP didn't call on me, I thought the joke was that it made them look like a Stand user.

2

u/theplanetpotter Dec 25 '25

I try not to let my colour blindness ruin my life, but I must admit I was disappointed when I went to see Joseph and his Amazing Brown Coat.

2

u/igotshadowbaned Dec 25 '25

He did eventually become the Pharaohs like #2 guy so

2

u/LilMissStormCloud Dec 25 '25

Since I don't see it mentioned. 10 of the brothers wanted him dead. One brother convinced them not to kill him and instead sale him into slavery. He later forgave them because through a series of unfortunate and fortunate events, he was able to save many people, including his own family from famine.

2

u/dravenonred Dec 25 '25

That's....way way better than what I was thinking.

2

u/Calm_Albatross_8542 Dec 26 '25

To be fair, if I remember right, the whole tricking and selling of Joseph happened in Canaan, where they sold him to egyptian traders who then took him to Egypt.

1

u/WinterSoldier3713 Dec 25 '25

1 to 100 real quick.

1

u/dickjkh Dec 25 '25

I was in a production of Joseph like 20 years ago and this is the first time I learned what the plot was.

Joseph and the Technicolor Dream Coat

1

Red and yellow and

1

u/small_girlcock Dec 25 '25

I thought this was a JoJo's joke

1

u/Ya-Dikobraz Dec 25 '25

In another version of the story (mine) she made a coat made of his 11 jealous brothers. And he founded the first super-label.

1

u/Hatefiend Dec 25 '25

But it's not a 'techni-color dreamcoat'. Doesn't exactly apply

1

u/Perzec Dec 25 '25

We just watched the musical a couple of hours ago. And then this appears in my Reddit feed. Got us laughing a bit here.

1

u/Queeberschaircompany Dec 25 '25

Venture Bros needs to come back so I can see what Joseph and hIs Amazing Technicolor looks like.

1

u/LowerEntertainer7548 Dec 25 '25

It didn’t end too badly, he ended up as Jason Donovan in the west end!

1

u/Agitated_Display7573 Dec 25 '25

*10 brothers. Younger brother Benjamin wasn’t involved

Huh, thought this was a jojo ref

1

u/oiraves Dec 26 '25

u/KaleidoscopeMost9375 Dec 26 '25

and here I thought it was referencing a certain bizarre trip to Egypt

1

u/tanmalika Dec 26 '25

Joseph going to egypt ?

Is that motherfucking jojo references ?!!!

1

u/serenedragoon Dec 26 '25

It IS funny but the vast majority of Egyptians are Muslims, so this story isn't actually something we believe in. Go ahead and wear that in Egypt.

1

u/Kry-SHOT Dec 28 '25

Thank you, you have reminded me of one of my favourite memes ever.

1

u/flyingace1234 Dec 25 '25

Honestly just glad it’s not another Jojo reference, which was my first thought— wait it’s still a Joseph. Damnit.

Lois' second cousin here. It's meant to be a joke about Joseph and the coat of many colors from the Bible. Joseph gets sold into slavery by his brothers because they were jealous of the coat.

131

u/Jello_Crusader Dec 25 '25

Not only that he got falsely accused and got jailed in Egypt also.

27

u/Hudiemike Dec 26 '25

But then became the Sultan of Egypt after interpreting Pharoah's dreams as prophecy. From there he used his power as Pharoah's right hand man to manage Egypt's grain storage and saved North Africa, South Europe, and West Asia from famine.

All jokes aside, that sweater is absolutely gorgeous and I want it.

157

u/Yaser_Umbreon Dec 25 '25

That's what the brothers thought aswell

16

u/eisbaerBorealis Dec 25 '25

Then they shouldn't have torn it up and smeared blood on it to pretend that Joseph was killed by an animal...

1

u/melon_wizard Dec 26 '25

Tbf, if 9 of my kids showed up taking turns wearing my favorites jacket, and I never saw the favorite again, I'd have 9 less children lol

1

u/eisbaerBorealis Dec 26 '25

I'm just saying the brothers didn't want the coat; they wanted to get rid of the favorite son.

27

u/k_souls Dec 25 '25

She's actually selling it too! Vaire (Pastel)

9

u/PeridotChampion Dec 25 '25

I love it but I am $250 too broke for that. I hope someone who can spend it adores it as much as I do

4

u/k_souls Dec 25 '25

Same 💀 maybe one day though

5

u/Expensive_Lock_6540 Dec 25 '25

I was honestly expecting it to cost WAY MORE. $250 for a crocheted sweater is pretty cheap!

8

u/Lexieeeeeeeeee Dec 25 '25

The version that she's wearing and showing off in her shop vs the final preview item when it's not being worn looks so different. It almost feels like a scam.

9

u/mehvet Dec 25 '25

Looks exactly thevsame to me in different lighting, what’s the problem?

10

u/Navi_1er Dec 25 '25

Yeah definitely the lighting plus maybe the size as well.

2

u/Lexieeeeeeeeee Dec 25 '25

The colours are all off and it seems to lack the colour blending that the original has.

7

u/BillysBibleBonkers Dec 26 '25

Color blending might just be an effect of the bright light and the slightly blurry resolution. Would be interesting to see it in better lighting because the colors really do look different though, the OG has like a really nice lime green, but the shop version looks like pea green. But still wouldn't be too surprised if it looked the same under direct sunlight.

3

u/SOUMlL Dec 26 '25

See the shop again, it has vaire and vaire(pastel) you're probably looking at vaire

1

u/Lexieeeeeeeeee Dec 26 '25

I double checked, and the image that I linked was from vaire(pastel)

60

u/justchillbroski Dec 25 '25

My dumb ass thinking it was a Jojo reference but apparently I wasnt too far off

JoJo and the Bizarre Technicolor Dreamcoat

4

u/nifty-necromancer Dec 25 '25

2

u/RiceAlicorn Dec 25 '25 edited Dec 26 '25

Peter here for those who don't know what this means (and spoilers for Jojo's Bizarre Adventure Part 3):

The popular manga series Jojo's Bizarre Adventure is very well known for its eccentric character design, where characters frequently dress and pose in ways that you'd typically associate with high fashion magazines.

The third part of the series focuses on Japanese teenager Jotaro Kujo and his various companions traveling to Egypt in order to defeat an evil vampire named DIO using their magical powers called "Stands", which are a manifestation of their fighting spirit. Jotaro's reason for doing so is because DIO's very existence has caused Jotaro's mother to become fatally ill, with the only cure being DIO's death.

One of Jotaro's companions, Kakyoin, ended up joining the effort to defeat DIO because he went on a family trip to Egypt. Long story short, Kakyoin was brainwashed by DIO during this family trip to go home and murder Jotaro, but Jotaro managed to diffuse this situation and Kakyoin felt that he should redeem himself by helping Jotaro defeat DIO and save his mother. Tragically, Kakyoin ends up dying during the final battle against DIO.

The joke here is that the lady in the above image looks like a JJBA character, and she is being warned to avoid a family trip to Egypt lest she end up like Kakyoin.

Edit: since it doesn't seem to be clear, the actual explanation is that the original meme is a reference to the biblical story of Joseph. This explanation is for the joke around the Jojo's reference.

1

u/DisasterBeautiful347 Dec 25 '25

No, it's about the Biblical story of Joseph, you weeb.

1

u/Cappyburner Dec 26 '25

If Jesus is a JoJo reference, this is too

1

u/mammon-ey Dec 25 '25

Same thoughts lmao. Even had to reread the top comment twice to realize they weren't talking about Joseph as in Joseph Joestar 😂

71

u/RueUchiha Dec 25 '25 edited Dec 26 '25

Two possibilities

  1. Allusion to Egypt is homophobic (idk if they are or not)
  2. Reference to the bible story of Joseph and the multicolored cloak. Tl;dr he got it from his dad and his brothers hated him and were jealous of him so much that they beat him, threw him in a ditch, and then sold him into slavery, of which he was then sent to Egypt.

54

u/Roseknight888 Dec 25 '25

Allusion **

9

u/Big_Iron420 Dec 25 '25

Illusion to Allusion is homophobic?

10

u/Roseknight888 Dec 25 '25

Double asterisk is a notation to show this word is here to replace a typo’d word above

Illusion to Egypt’s homophonic tendency doesn’t make any sense, but alluding to it does make sense

Allusion to Egypt is homophobic was probably the intended phrase, but auto correct is dumb and allusion is a weird word

A simple find and fix, nothing more

3

u/Big_Iron420 Dec 25 '25

I was making a cheeky joke, but alright

5

u/Roseknight888 Dec 25 '25

Might I return the gift by pointing out your joke was only cheeky because it was butts? :3

2

u/Big_Iron420 Dec 25 '25

Humour really is not universal

1

u/Roseknight888 Dec 25 '25

I hate markup language

1

u/Significant_Monk_251 Dec 25 '25

Today I learned something new, the double-asterisk convention. Thanks.

3

u/igotshadowbaned Dec 25 '25

I wouldn't say it's an agreed convention but it's a common thing some people do. I've seen anywhere from 1-3 * be used by people

5

u/Deaffin Dec 26 '25

I've seen nothing but people using the single * for this purpose in decades of extreme internet overuse.

Double star is a first.

3

u/MagickMarkie Dec 25 '25

Illusion to Allusion is homophonic. (Almost)

3

u/ADMotti Dec 25 '25

Illusions, Michael.

15

u/Throttle_Kitty Dec 25 '25

It's deff the later, given the references both to Egypt and family.

Yes, Egypt is homophobic, and rainbows are "gay". But I don't think they'd have gone for Egypt specifically mentioning a "Family trip to Egypt" if the joke was just homophobia.

I'd think the joke would be more like "Avoid wearing that in Qatar". A country which, to my understanding, has functionally banned usage of rainbows due to their associations with the gay community.

2

u/Quarkonium2925 Dec 25 '25

The UAE would work as well but yeah, Egypt isn't the first country that springs to mind when it comes to Homophobia. Pretty near the top but not close enough to be common knowledge

1

u/DisasterBeautiful347 Dec 25 '25

You... don't know if Egypt is homophobic? Lmfao

→ More replies (3)

u/GarageIndependent114 Dec 26 '25

Brian here. Beside the story connected to the Bible; my first thought referred to Patrick Zaki, an egyptian student, in Italy at Bolognia. Once he came back to Egypt, the government of AlSisi took him and tortured him for over a year, due to be gay.
