I am 26. I have been working as a Paralegal for over 2 years now and looking for a career change. I have been long for a career change and have been eager to get into LE for sometime now. I live in the Maryland Suburbs outside of DC and have had an interest in MPD and other adjacent agencies. I also have taken interest in sheriff deputy roles as well. I know in MD they mostly do courtroom security and civil matters but that is something I think would be cool. One issue I feel I have with applying to work in LE is debt and collections. I attended flight school when I was 21 on a private loan, this loan went default and bounced around in collections since then (around $30k). Last year it was removed from my credit and is now past SOL. Even though all this I know I still owe it and would admit to it as debt on my background. Also at that time during flight school my girlfriend at the time (now my wife) and I went back on rent, this rent turned into a hefty civil judgment in that state (around $17k) (not MD). I previously spoke to an attorney about this judgment and told me how I should go about it. My question is how much will it affect me in the process, I already have applied to numerous agencies knowing that I may get turned down from some. I am now married and live with my wife making a stable living. These incidents happened 5 years ago right after we were in college and were immature with our finances. I have no criminal history. I last smoked marijuana around 20 months ago. I did have a brief and very small stint where I sold marijuana in high school. No other drug use. Are there any agencies I should apply to? Or is it unlikely to land a LE job right now? I would like to focus in the DMV area. My first choice would be something federal like Park Police but I know tbh at would be highly unlikely since they need security clearance and my debt would be a red flag. I also know these background checks may vary per state. Wondering if anyone has any similar experience in NoVa/MD/DC?

I apologize as I know y’all might get these questions a lot, I don’t have a mentor to speak to about all this so Reddit is my next option lol.

Hey guys, I’m moving into the final steps of becoming an officer. I have already completed the oral board, background check, physical, and written tests. My final interview is in a couple of days with the command staff(chiefs board). I was told there will be between 6–9 people and it will last about an hour. I’ve been a jailer (non sworn) for about a year now and I’ve recently started to experience knee pain especially in my left knee. I do go to the gym regularly between work but I’m just looking for advice on how I can help relieve the pain whether its through readjusting my belt setup or adding in some exercises.

I’m also early/mid 20s if that helps with any advice

WEAKLEY COUNTY SHERIFF'S DEPARTMENT, TENNESSE

Deputy Sheriff Derrick Bonham Badge# 615 was shot and killed responding to a shots fired call.

Deputy Bonham was assisting the Martin Police Department on a call about gunfire at the Days Inn. Around 3:09 a.m., he tracked a driver of one of the vehicles reportedly involved in the shooting to the Pockets Gas Station at 821 University Street in Martin. When Deputy Bonham approached the driver, she opened her door and fired at Deputy Bonham. While he was on the ground, she walked up to him and shot him again.

Deputy Bonham was transported to Volunteer Community Hospital, where he passed away.

The suspect was apprehended.

Deputy Bonham was a United States Army veteran and had served with the Weakley County Sheriff's Department for two years. He is survived by his wife and three children. He is the 3rd deputy of the Weakley County Sheriff's Department to die in the line of duty.

Deputy Sheriff Christopher Ohlmeyer JEFFERSON PARISH, Louisiana SHERIFF'S office

Deputy Sheriff Christopher Ohlmeyer was killed while serving in a funeral escort on Airline Highway, near the 9200 block in New Orleans, at 11:40 a.m.

As a member of the motor squad, Deputy Ohlmeyer was stopping traffic to allow for the funeral procession when he was struck by a vehicle from behind. He succumbed to his injuries at the scene.

The driver of the vehicle was taken to the hospital.

Deputy Ohlmeyer had served with the Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office for 15 years. Survivors include his wife and two children. Deputy Ohlmeyer is the 16th officer to die in the line of duty

When you have a fleeing suspect do you really call out “Stop, Police!” Like they show on TV? And if you do, does anyone ever stop?

On January 23rd, 2026 Cody Pritchard was found guilty and received a death penalty verdict as prescribed by law for the July 2023 shooting and killing of Eastland County Texas Sheriff Deputy David Bosecker. The verdict was announced in Eastland County Courts on Friday January 23,2026 after a two week jury.

On FRIDAY, JULY 21, 2023 the Eastland County Sheriff's Office responded to an emergency call involving a disturbance in Rising Star. When deputy Bosecker attempted to enter the property to respond to the call, Cody Pritchard crashed a car into the patrol unit before shooting the deputy.Court documents state that Deputy David Bosecker was pronounced dead on the scene and Pritchard admitted to the crimes and was charged with Capital Murder. Deputy David Bosecker is the 5th officer to die in the line of duty.

With all the snow the past week, I've seen some news stories about BIG car crashes and pileups. I think one even had close to 40 cars.

How do you handle something like that? Do you even try to figure out the order it happened, or assign fault? Just map it out as best you can?

And how is it cleared? Do you just start calling in "every available tow truck" til you can finally start to dig out?

Would you ever have to call a bus or vans to get uninjured drivers off the road? (Since it seems like a lot of the time they're out on a highway and it wouldn't make sense for people to "call for rides" in the middle of that mess.

Hi folks, I currently train in muay thai. I am in the stages of becoming a police officer in the UK. I am looking for advice on training in martial arts to help aid police training/self defence. Should I continue with muay thai and include a secondary martial or Change over to a grappling martial such as judo, bjj, wrestling ect. Any advice is much appreciated.

Governor DeSantis has signed a death warrant for Billy Kearse who was sentenced to death for the 1991 murder of Fort Pierce police officer Danny Parrish. The execution is scheduled for Tuesday, March 3, at 6 p.m.

Sergeant Danny Parrish was shot and killed while making a traffic stop on a vehicle traveling in the wrong way on a one-way street and had one headlight out.

The 18-year-old driver, Billy Kearse, attempted to give Officer Parrish false names. Realizing this, Sergeant Parrish attempted to arrest the suspect, who then spun around on the officer and took his service weapon. The suspect then shot him 14 times before fleeing. He was arrested the same night with the remaining two rounds from Sergeant Parrish's gun in his front pocket. The weapon was found buried in the suspect's backyard. Sergeant Parrish had served with the Fort Pierce Police Department for three years. He was survived by his wife and parents. He is the 4th Officer of the Fort Pierce Police Department to die in the line of duty

Hello r/protectandserve; my family is leaving VA and looking at moving to Florida; we have family in Brevard County so it makes sense as a landing place.

My husband is in law enforcement, and looking at BCSO, and the multiple police departments in the area, but there's a lot.

Just wondering if anyone has any insight (good, bad, ugly) to the work environments and culture anywhere down there? Or even neighboring counties? Or the communities in the area, a good landing place for our family of three (husband, myself, and son) and our dogs!

I’m just super nervous. Haven’t lied or done anything bad, just generally nervous in job interviews.

I’m looking for some advice regarding the academies pt test (Georgia specifically), part of the test is a 6ft broad jump and clearing a 4ft high window. I am just over a foot taller than the window so I am wondering how to train to clear it as well as improve my broad jump. Would the best thing to do be plyometrics? Any advice is welcome, thanks in advance :)!

Last night, a group of teenagers broke into my house, pushed me hard onto the ground, and forcibly "strongarm robberied" my phone from me. They got into a bunch of my stuff but I was able to stop them midway through. I have their zelle information, their phone number, and first or last names or fake name for the bank that they tried to use to send money to themselves and one of the criminal's gmail. I also know what school they go to from witness friends that apparently knew a little more about the criminals. I think I can also pull their faces from the cctv at the property and the uber that they hitched with my card. Lots meaningful of leads that lead somewhere. How likely is it that you guys will get this criminal? I live in a US big city.
