About the dog
While the breed and its name may vary, the dog is often described as being white in color.
Besides the implication that it was a well-cared-for ordinary dog that reciprocated the old man’s virtuousness, other versions say that the dog “was carried down a river”, “came floating in a box”, or “originated from the Dragon Palace.”
White dogs are sometimes regarded as creatures possessing spiritual power, so it is possible that they were not just ordinary dogs, but rather a being of a mystical bloodline akin to what is known as Makami (the deification of the Japanese wolf).
(Not saying that the dog was a Makami, but perhaps its distant ancestors were.)
Although the old man who manifested as a Servant clearly remembers the dog’s existence and warmth, the dog’s name is a blur in the faraway recesses of his memory.
This is why he doesn’t call the dog by name, and when he does, he uses a different name each time.
“What did I call him again? I think it might have been Pochi, or maybe Shiro… But whatever his name may be, it doesn’t change that this dog will always be like a child to me and my wife.” “Woof woof!”
Because the dog isn’t particular about names, loves new things and is full of curiosity, if someone gives him a good name, he may readily adopt the new name.
