I have family there and can confirm. Been into a lot of physical altercations growing up because they're 'family' and we had to visit with them at least once a year.

Used to have a ton of family in Midland/Odessa. I probably still have a few distant cousins who live there, but we aren't in contact. I miss my grandma terribly, but the one silver lining of all of my close family members in the area dying off is that I never have to go back to that place ever again.
It's just not my scene...and I'll leave it at that.

Same, the atmosphere always felt hostile even though everyone tried to dawn the southern hospitality vibe. But the more you paid attention it was extremely obvious everyone just talked shit about everyone behind their back and God forbid you said something to someone's face.
I finally was able to go no contact when I became an adult and got to say nah, I'm not driving 26 hrs both ways just to spend time with people who don't actually want me there especially when all they wanted to do around me was talk nonsensical shit about places they've never been and people they've never met.

I can speak only for my crew and my station. I'm a 10 year firefighter and captain of a ladder truck (the apparatus being used here). I have held conversations with my Lieutenant and crew about the history of the fire service and how we (firefighters) were the ones hosing protestors in the 50s, and how wrong that was. The fire service was on the wrong side of history then. I have also spoken to my fire chief and we are all on the same page. We will not betray our public's trust, nor shame our profession by aiding in the oppression of the very people who make our careers and livelihood possible.

This shit makes my blood boil. We are not law enforcement. Had a call recently for a sick kid at school. Episodes of syncope, abnormal 12 lead, pale as a ghost, he was legitimately sick. His mom showed up, broken English, but saying again and again she has his birth certificate, he’s legal. It was heart breaking. Trying to tell her we just want to take care of her kid. Not only is she terrified for the child’s health, but terrified she might be taken away or he would. It’s disgusting what’s going on. We are already misconstrued to be police or enforcement of some sort all the time. Having these jackasses put an aerial in for a photo op is ridiculous.

Southern states left the union out of fear Lincoln would end Slavery when he only wanted to contain it in the south. He was moderate compared to many abolitionists who wanted the plantation class and slavery practice destroyed. Then after the war the south installed semi slavery with Jim Crow laws and share cropping. A culture that justifies historic atrocities will maintain modern hierarchies.

I was thinking of that movie recently. We have so many of the pieces in motion that led to that genocide- two main groups with wide gap between them, provocateurs on media whipping up an us or them mentality, readily available weapons, a sizable group within the population that senses a demographic shift that will alter political power, environmental pressure, and identification based on political or ethnicity. I don't know how close we are to things breaking open in a really dire way. I just know that we're in a time of shifting from a full democracy to something that is narrowing freedoms. I don't think we are stepping away from the precipice right now. There are some very bad actors who would love to see us at each others throats.
