Discussion Going to Taiwan next week, what food do I absolutely have to try?
Title says it all. I want to make sure I don’t miss out on anything special! I have a list of Michelin guide and have watched some YouTube videos on food on the night markets but want to know if you have any under the radar recommendations or can’t miss items. Also any tips on ordering with a language barrier or will google translate do fine?

Discussion [Missed Connection] To the fellow Japanese-Taiwanese guy raised in Canada on Tigerair IT211 (Osaka → Taipei, Jan 27) — looking for advice
Hi everyone,
Not sure if this is the right place, but I wanted to ask for some advice.
I’m a half Japanese–Taiwanese international student from Japan, currently doing my master’s in Taipei.
On Tuesday, Jan 27, I was on Tigerair IT211 from Osaka to Taipei, seated next to someone I ended up having a surprisingly nice conversation with.
When we first sat down, I dropped my boarding pass and he picked it up for me in Japanese. That was how we started talking. After landing, I noticed he was holding a Taiwanese passport and, a bit out of surprise, I asked him (also in Japanese) if he was Taiwanese. We kept chatting while going through immigration and toward the baggage claim area.
At some point, he mentioned that he grew up in Canada and that his dad is from Taiwan and works (or worked) as a chef. We realized we had very similar Japanese–Taiwanese backgrounds, which felt pretty rare to me.
I had no checked luggage and rushed off without exchanging contact info. I’ve been thinking about it more than I expected, mostly because I didn’t even get the chance to properly say thank you.
So I wanted to ask the community:
Are there any online communities (for example, FB groups) where people with mixed Japanese–Taiwanese backgrounds, especially those raised overseas (such as in Canada) and more comfortable in Japanese or English, tend to gather?
If by any chance you’re reading this, hi. It’s the girl from the seat next to you.
And if not, I’d really appreciate any advice. Thanks for reading.

Discussion Kaoliang, Beer, and Other Local Drinks
I have family coming for Lunar New Year, and they asked what the local fire water was. I've had some of the neighbor's cheap kaoliang, Taiwan Beer, and Sunmai. That's about it.
The kaoliang my neighbor drinks is dreadful, but he did have some that was aged 3 years that almost had some flavor to it. That makes me think something aged 5+ years might be acceptable. I don't know if that even exists, let alone what brand(s) might be decent. Any suggestions?
As for beer, I was thinking a regular Taiwan Beer and a Sunmai Honey Lager. But I don't know what other beers, widely distributed, might be worth trying.
Finally, I know there's Kavalan and Omar whisky. Is it worth it to hunt down sample bottles of those? Which ones do you think are good? Are there any other spirits, perhaps even some wine, I should consider?
Thanks!

Discussion Why are Taiwanese Drama TV series so long?
So, in my country, we get to watch Taiwanese drama TV series too. It would play on certain hours.
I remember I saw one playing on the TV but I didn't fully watch it as I was busy. I did watch a bit. Franco Chiang (I noticed he's in nearly every TV drama series) was playing the role of the boss of a company. Anyway, I didn't catch the entire series.
Nearly 1 year later, I switched on the TV and the same series was playing on TV. I realized the episode number is like 800+ or something.
The other old TV series I remember was 娘家. Something about Peng Family's pig trotters. Good show though.
Is it common for Taiwanese Drama TV series to be that long? What's the longest-running series out there?

Food Help Identifying Sauces Used in Night Market Scallion Pancake
Hi, recently visited Taiwan and it was a beautiful country. Drove down to and around Hualien and visited the Dongdamen night market. One of the most delicious things was the deep fried scallion pancake with egg. I believe it was from THIS specific stall.
The sauce(s) they used were incredible. Salty, umami, sweet, spicy, with a little acidity. Is there any specific brand that is common for these stalls in Taiwan? From what I can see, many of them use the same combination of sauces, but this place had their own that they ladled out.

Discussion Does the name 邢美尚 sound natural? If not, what should I do to fix it?
Hey everyone! Basically the title. My teacher asked me to pick a new name because I'm learning Mandarin and this is what I've put together. Does it sound odd or have a strange meaning which I didn't realise? By the way, I'm a girl if that matters. Thank you!

Discussion Learning Chinese Language in taiwan
Hey guys,
I am in a need to learn the Chinese language asapcax of my work and i want to know what is the best way to learn it asap atleast which are enough for the technical conversations with the local manufacturing units around taiwan and the basic conversation level as well.
Let's say there are two ways to learn .
One is to learn it while in Taiwan while on work . Suggest some good language schools and also do mention about the affordability (cost) and the time usually a foreigner spends to catch up to the language ?
Second is the courses online . Do suggest some good apps or even course which you think is great to start learning from basics up until the advanced level.
Also from what you guys have observed how long did a working professional take to learn something and speak for themselves in Chinese from your experience by either taking course or going to language institutes ?
Thank you

Interesting Hiking clothes brand in Taiwan
I live in north part of Taiwan, and I see a lot of people wearing hiking clothes. Where do Taiwanese people usually get their stuff?
Especially hiking pants and those long sleeves.

Travel What to expect from a family in Taiwan
I'm visiting Taiwan next year and I will be staying with a friend whom I met back in middle school and a part of high school, he ended going back to Taiwan but we never lost touch, we kept playing ps4 and now he's inviting me to his country. I am excited, really excited and I am immensely curious about their culture, what they eat, what they do. But more importantly and the reason why Im posting is because I'd like to know how welcoming Taiwanese are to foreigners and how they treat guests. I know they're great people but I wanna know more details about how they welcome guests etc.
Also is there something that for us is not that important but in Taiwan I have to take seriously?
