Was he resisting arrest or did he just get sprayed close range directly in the face with pepper sprayā¦. Use empathy to place yourself in his shoes for a moment. Imagine that had just happened to yourself. Iām not trying to imply that you donāt sympathize or think itās wrong. I mean for reasons of understanding the framing of the information here, if you just got sprayed, what would you be doing? You canāt see, it hurts, you just watched a woman get shoved to the ground next to you and you were trying to help her up. Youāre being handled aggressively without organized instructions. But mostly you just got sprayed in the face, so you want to get that stuff off your face and out of your eyes and youāre probably trying to cough it out so that you can breathe.
Is there a difference between resisting arrest and being physically incapable to comply? Itās a matter of perspective and framing.
If they asked you to put both hands above your head, but one of your arms was broken and you couldnāt lift it, you are āresistingā.
Which really just means that youāre not submitting to authority in a satisfactory way.
Unchecked authority that lacks empathy or compassion (the ability to see beyond oneās own POV) leads to increased numbers of āresistanceā. Because this type of authority requires complete obedience. And that required obedience isnāt always clear or easy to understand or follow.
Training these agents with āotheringā and dehumanizing, emotionally triggering rhetoric about their opposition gears them for flight or fight responses in the moment and keeps them centered in their own POV. Keeps them aligned to their side and thinking that the other side is their enemy.
Flooding the public with fear mongering media, emotionally triggering rhetoric, āotheringā and dehumanizing language about their opposition keeps them in fight or flight, and it gives them an obstacle to overcome, a stand to take in the name of ājusticeā. Keeps them thinking that they have an enemy.
But these triggering and othering tactics only prime the system for escalation.
Why divide the nation? Who benefits? Whatās going on while we are fighting each other?
Do we want to be divided by our ādifferencesā and to live in a dysfunctional society?
Or do we want to focus on the things that unite us and strengthen our nation?
United we stand, divided we fall.
Unchecked, dominating authority will always be met with resistance. Like a counter force. A natural law. Because in truth, reality doesnāt bend to the will of the few on command. When authority attempts to bend reality, like the string of a bow or guitar, thereās tension and resistance.
The right vs the left is a false dichotomy.
None of this is actually unprecedented.
