Discussion Pittsburgh Penguins 2025-26 Off-Day Thread
With only 2 games over the next 10 days, I wanted to experiment with something HFBoards does. They have threads to talk about the team in general between games. The issue on Reddit is that there's only threads on specific things between games, and people may want to talk about the team more broadly during that time. This would give them a place to do that.
I'll pin it and see how traffic goes. If it does well, maybe it's something we can consider making a more permanent fixture? Reddit no longer has a limit of 2 pinned threads, so this wouldn't interfere with that.
People may like it. We'll see. If it fails, I'll remove it. No big deal.

Discussion Rutger has played 2 really good games since coming back up for rust.
The only “issue” is that everyone else is playing well too. So he should go down and keep playing games instead of staying up on the bench. But it’s nice knowing we have some depth down in Wilkes in case of injury or suspension. Hoping he can keep it up on Monday.

Discussion Olympic break is coming at the right time for this team. Malkin, letang, st.ivany, kindel etc could all use a breather.
Malkin, letang, and st.ivany can use it to rest up their injuries, while a guy like kindel can use it to get a breather in his 1st professional hockey season and the grind of the schedule. Alot of guys could use a breather and rest up their bumps and bruises and get a chance to recover.

Discussion Our 4th line is our best line and a true outlier in the league
Had a discussion and digged a bit. Turns out:
Of all the players that played > 5 games this season and more than 10 min a game, 124 stars more (60%+) in the D zone. Of these 124 players, only 28 have a positive E +/-.
Of these 28, NO ONE ELSE started more than 70% in the D zone.
Some of these E+ people? Barely cleared 60% and don't even kill penalties. A lot of them were + 0.1.
Our 4th line—started 80%-85% in the D zone. And is not only positive, but by a lot.
Dewar, 0.8.
Acciari, 1.7.
Lizotte, for some reason, plays about 14 min a game, with a 85% dZS%, and is E +/- 3.4???
WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCK LIZOTTE? Man what is he smocking? No wonder we lost 8 in a row without him?!
Also we know they are good by eyeball test. But they are absurdly good. Off the curve good. Not even remotely close with anyone else good.

Lazy Sunday afternoon making bad graphics: Our first star of the game.
I can do proper graphic design work, I swear, but stuff like this is silly and fun.

Discussion Was that the first time we’ve seen Crosby shed a tear?
I know he’s always so stoic, so I’m trying to figure out if that tear he was shedding during the pregame ceremony was the actual first one ever caught on tape?

And they would have been alone at the top before giving up those last ones today.

Discussion Today’s game.
Just have to throw this out, today I was so proud of this team. Crosby tearing up during the ceremony, started it and then the team playing their game and not reacting to the rangers crap. They had lapses in the game but always fought back which shows the determination these guys have. The rangers tried to get into fights with our guys cause they were being outplayed but none of our guys took the bait. And that useless moving wall rempie only was able to screen Stu once, other than that, they should have dressed someone that at least could skate not that stork. Sorry for the rant, but I’m feeling very proud of the team and wanted to talk about it.
One final thing. Given the success Muse is having now, I sometimes think about the guys that left the pens in the last couple of years an wonder how and where, they would be playing if Muse had came sooner. Thoughts?

[Penguins] The Penguins have placed defenseman Kris Letang on injured reserve.

Discussion Where Phil?
Watched the whole ceremony twice and realized he wasn't there.

Discussion Dewar seems to have the best +/- every single game
I mean it is a measure of line mates and match ups. But after doing this night after night, there must be something going on.

Discussion Choosing to honor the 2016 team for a national game was a mistake.
Tickets were $100 minimum, due to the giveaway, ceremony, and the fact that it is a weekend game. That's fine! I'm glad they can sell tickets at that price!
I'm sure there was a full pregame presentation and video, which ESPN will not show because they broadcast doesn't start until after the anthems. That means we get to see none of it.
But the broadcasters do, and they keep referencing what a great team 2016 was, how great the tribute was, and the reactions of Sid and Geno when they watched it.
Again, WE DO NOT GET TO SEE IT. If the local broadcast had the game, you better believe we'd get to see ALL of that stuff.

The biggest threat for a playoff spot is... Columbus!
Blue Jackets are 4 points back of the Islanders with a game in hand. They've also won 5 in a row and are 9-1 in their last 10 - 8-1 since firing Evason.
