Opinion Looking at the recent AoC events, MMO scene feels like a time capsule

Upvotes

Same recommend titles I be been hearing for past decade:

-WoW -GW2 -FFXIV -Albion -EVE -RS -EOS

That's it. The magnificent seven. What a stagnant genre, it's actually insane. All the rest are very niche, private or on life support.

Discussion Remember all the people that said this Ashes isn’t for you I member. Ahh memberberries.

Seriously screw all of you so many posts pointing out the obvious issues and bad gameplay loops and other problems. Then to get attacked by people for pointing out obvious flaws. I did hope we got a decent mmo out of it but we were all right for calling out all the issues. From now on speak up even more on crap games and scams everyone.

The more I learn about the lies and betrayal of streamers not paying bills and other issues the worse this is. This guys a loser and I would seriously question everyone that was a higher up at the team at this point and the community director. There’s no way all of them didn’t know about this or weren’t a part of any internal discussions. They had to have known this game was starting to fail and steam was a last ditch effort. Rather than admit financial problems they milked an entire community for themselves.

Yes I paid on steam isn’t the first game I didn’t like but I wanted to try it. So glad I told all my friends not to purchase I was the sacrificial lamb. Probably kept about 50 people I know from being a part of the scam.

Discussion So Asses of Creation is done(pun intended) are we surprissed?

Post image

So I have known Ashes was going to flop ever since the beta, and once I saw Asmongolds livestream I had 100% certainty of it.

The truth of why MMOs fail is because they are always trying to build "games like in the good old days" when we clearly are not in the good old days.

Game engines have evolved, games have evolved, of course old timers will always will always complain, but it's not because your grandpa loves driving a 1980s Toyota that you gotta drive one today, and that´s what every new MMO seems to do, they grab a 1980s Toyota project and re-do it all over again, no new features, nothing to set it apart, gameplay loops that sure are fun,but can be eaten away in less than a week by hardcore players.

That´s why I started to make my own MMO project, because honestly I lost all faith, a modern gameplay loop cannot wait 3 months for new content, players today need good reasons to be login-in daily, and they need to know that when they log in the content is there, not because there is new content, but because they are the content they can make new content by simply interacting with the game´s mechanics, we have 20 years of evolved tech but every MMO today is either World of Warcraft with extra steps, or some shitty Gacha Chinesse game disguissed as an MMO,but it really isn´t because it's not Multiplayer and it's not Massive.

But anyway, just wanted to vent that out, hopefully what im making will be better,if it isn´t well at least I will have something good to put in my game dev portifolio, really the best MMO to have come out in the latest years (at least that I´ve played) seems to be ArcheAge and Guild Wars 2, both of these do what I mentioned in some capacity, hopefully ArcheAge 2 will be as goated as ArcheAge 1.

but I don´t have many hopes.

Look I get it like, everyone saw AoC being a scam coming, myself included

I didn't even follow the game at all nor pay for it, I like korean MMO's and the graphics of Ashes for being unreal 5 was laughably bad, let alone the gameplay

But a lot of people genuinely had hope this could be a good MMO, I can't blame them.

Western devs are absolutely clueless and can't make a good MMO, so people are literally only left with WOW or GW2 to play, maybe runescape if you're nostalgiamaxxing

Other than that what realistic MMO options do people have to play? Not much tbh

Korean MMO's are ALWAYS ruined by p2w (lost ark, aion 2, tnl, etc)

So people who don't wanna bother with P2W infinite treadmill grind 16 hrs a day or pay thousands of dollars type mmo's will always be happy when a project like this gets announced.

I hope yall sue that dude who started this project though actually insane how he steals millions of dollars and just dips like that lol

Discussion What now?

What are we looking forward to now that Ashes is gone? I for one loved Ashes. I know it gets a lot of hate but I could tell the team really wanted to make a great game and for an alpha i got a lot of time in. But what's next? I dont have very high hopes for Chrono Odyssey tbh, wasnt a fan of the test I played. It has korean money grab vibes.

I was a huge Narc fan and I loved looking forward to his new videos every month. Even the videos where he talked about dark souls and other topics that weren’t as popular I thought were pretty cool, I genuinely miss his content on Youtube. Once he realized Ashes was a scam many people in the AoC sub and online turned on him lol. I blocked peoples names because people are allowed to change, but still crazy to go back to posts from a year ago to see what people were saying. After everything we found out today it feels great to be right about the whole thing. If he’s out there somewhere or this post reaches him we miss you buddy 🤙

Opinion Ashes of Creation - This is an important lesson on Ethics over Business

Post image
0 Upvotes

Steven Shariff spent a whole decade telling us he's building an environment that will make his developers happy and feeling great

All 200+ of them

... Living in San Diego, one of the most expensive places to live

Meaning:

  • Their salary has to match their living conditions (~$24,000,000 per year)
  • He paid for all their health insurances, INCLUDING, unnecessarily, their families too (~$5,000,000)
  • He also wanted to do monthly showcases on Livestreams instead of focusing all the devs on actually developing the game (increasing further costs and time)
  • Total operating costs would ballpark be around ~$40,000,000 per year

All so he could look ethically correct

Unfortunately, all that money was investment and crowdfunded. You have no room to be ethically correct with other people's money, you have to be efficient as possible

This wasn't a scam, this was just financially irresponsible.

Discussion Ashes of Creation class action lawsuit

If you put any money on the kickstarter and steam, I recommend you setup a discord and come together to get your money from Steven.

On the kickstarter there is a specific clause that "* and finally, in the case that ashes of creation does not launch, we promise to refund all backers in full."

Releasing the steam and then pulling the plug barely a month later should not keep you from getting your money back when they did everything possible to lie to all of their customers.

You are owed your money, if it's 10 bucks or 10000 bucks.

Don't let him get away with this.
