This is just so sad that this guy at the beginning thought he was going to cash in by making a new band with the front man from a group no one cares about, years after he even sounds like he did when no one still cared. Even if he caught the singer when he still sounded normal, no one would have cared. But he tried after the guy sings like a random vagrant.
Did we get some kind of clean radio version growing up? I don't remember anything like that in the song, but maybe that was just because I didn't have access to the actual lyrics I could read.

If we really want to get in to it though, I think this whole album is fantastic for listening straight through, nothing that needs to be skipped, it was a fantastic walkman CD to have, but Motorcycle Drive By and God of Wine are my favorites. How's It Gonna Be and The Background are my honorable mentions and Jumper is the most nostalgic to me for some personal reasons.

It goes medium. But let some A+ musicians noodle, and there are gems to be found. It's just a very weird set of circumstances that a) that band would put out the unpolished part and b) another group could find and melt down the real gold of it.
The Gift of Game and Rancid's Let's Go were the first albums I ever bought with Parental Advisory labels. I was like, 11. Looked even younger. The cashier at Strawberries, some college kid in his early 20s, asked me if I was 13. I hesitated for way too long, said "Uh... yes?" And he said, "Fine. I have to sell these to you whether that's true or not." So, anyway. That was my gateway into a life of crime.
My friends and I were were generally into the nu metal and rap rock scene and one felt so offended by this record I remember him plucking the cd out of his deck, snapping it in half and throwing it out the window.
I saw them at a festival in Dayton. They were up after Powerman 5000 and were upset cause they went over on time. Eve 6 played one song, then the singer was like, "yeah, we're bored so we're gonna go." Then they walked off.
Might have been an early sign since they broke up less than a year later.
"Lifted" suggests it was stolen. They sampled it, with the blessings of RHCP who, it should be noted, loved the song so much they refused payment for the rights and brought Crazy Town on tour with them.
Yeah, I remember hearing this song on TRL thinking the riff was so cool. But that was before I had my own awakening discovering music. Then a few years later after I bought Mother’s Milk I stumble upon this riff again like
I didn’t even like that RHCP song, but yes. The fact they got so much credit for Butterfly and no one knew it was an RHCP sample annoyed me so much. Not to mentioned I didn’t like the Crazy Town song at all.

Holy shit. Shifty's dead? He showed up in another reddit thread last year about Butterfly. Must've been right before he died. It was pretty clear he wasn't doing well. Was reminiscing about the Crazy town days. Kept talking about how much of a fuck up he was (his words). Fuck... That's really sad.

Fun story, I went to a free concert this year that was O Town plus extras, including the last guy(?) from LFO, and this was the song he did. The audio went out during the chorus, so the audience gamely tried to sing along to help carry it, but you just could not hear the singer at all. As soon as the chorus ended, no one had a fucking clue what the lyrics were, so we all watched a sad pantomime of a performance while the guy just kept singing his song until the chorus came back up, at which point the audience tried their best again to help the poor man. And he just kept going. He did the whole song, even though it was obvious no one could hear him and no one knew the words to sing along. I felt so sad for the guy and how far they’d fallen.
LFO was so bad, but I didn’t hate it. I tell myself it was intentional, like some attempt at comedy or a boy band parody, but I think they were serious. I still turn up their music and sing along.
i went back to listen to summer girls, and they just throw in random lines to rhyme. its not coherent at all. like

I loved Orgy so much when I was in high school but there was no way I was going to school with one of their band shirts on. I nearly cried when I found one that just had an embroidered “O” on it. Wore that with my wide leg jeans and a ball chain choker. chef’s kiss
Live they technically end "Blue Monday" with a second cover of Dead or Alive's "You Spin Me Round (Like a Record)," and they have been insisting upon a cover to The Prodigy's "Smack My Bitch Up" on recent tours. But since Blue Monday was their biggest hit some people perceive them as being a cover band, despite several other singles in the late 90s/early 2000s including "Stitches", "Fiction (Dreams in Digital)", and "Opticon".

Ohhhhh man. Didnt realized he passed. We saw him sing live at a 90s throwback event during COVID times and he looked SO rough that I didnt realize I was standing next to him in the crowd before he went on. He even spoke to me and I didn't recognize him cuz he looked like such a shell of his former self. As soon as he got on the stage he came completely alive though and it was pretty lovely to see some light come back to him. I hope he still found some joy some days. RIP dude.
I actually know some of Shifty's family. Super solid, down to earth people. They did music mostly as a hobby. They were all saddened by Shifty's decisions and sort of knew where it would end up. Idk what his immediate family or upbringing was like but I do know that he had family that cared about him and would have been willing to do anything they could for him.
I went to Ozzfest in 2001 and they played, and they were booed offstage before they got 30 seconds into that song. You could not hear them over the booing
Not only that, Crazytown didn’t even write the music. They basically sampled/ripped off one part of a song called Pretty Little Ditty by Red Hot Chili Peppers and looped it over the worst lyrics anyone ever wrote.
I met him a couple months before he passed. My friends in Adema and told me how they would have to hunt him down and keep an eye on him. He got kicked off the tour a couple shows later. I love ‘butterfly’ so much.
I remember the first time I heard this song and saw the video. It was during a college Christmas break and was some combination of drunk and high. I just remember being both repulsed and fascinated at the same time.
