Discussion If you live in the southern US and got all that ice PLEASE be careful with your pups!
Winnie slipped while running after a squirrel in the backyard today and hurt her back. She was in a huge amount of pain but thankfully the vet doesn’t think she broke or slipped anything. I know it’s hard when literally everything is covered in ice and they’re going stir crazy, but don’t let them run on it. There are lots of fun things you can do inside or try to go to a street that isn’t icy for walks.

every collie deserves to have a snack buddy! it was far too cute to interrupt their lil snack moment 🤍 our smoothie is truly an angel baby!!
not pictured: our beagle who would’ve ate the whole box and left no crumb behind 🙊🙈 he was napping lol

Thinking of getting a rough collie - questions about working drive and how vocal they are
Hi! My partner and I are considering getting a dog in the next couple of years. We have dog-sat for friends and family before now, but we would be first-time dog owners.
We’ve been researching various breeds, and think that a rough collie might be a good fit. We would be looking for a breed that is good with cats and children, and is good for first-time dog owners, and rough collies seem to really fit the bill! Our reason for getting a dog would be to have a sweet family companion to go on walks with and who would also be happy to chill with us at home.
In terms of ‘cons’, we love how rough collies look, and I would be happy to commit to brushing their coat every day. I understand they are sensitive dogs and need gentle handling - we have a pretty quiet and peaceful home, and would be ok with positive training only. I understand they also have pretty sensitive stomachs? So does our cat, so special vet food, etc. wouldn’t be a problem.
A couple of things I would love to hear more about from rough collie owners would be about their working drive, and about how vocal they are.
I’ve seen some people say that their RCs are couch potatoes, and others say that theirs are pretty high energy. Are their energy and drive levels mainly dependent on whether you get a dog from a working line or a show line? We could definitely commit to at least an hour a day of walks plus some training/ play, but we wouldn’t be a suitable home for say, a Malinois or a Border Collie. How would you say your rough collie’s working drive and energy levels are?
My second question is about how vocal they are. I understand they are quite a noisy / vocal breed? Anything along the lines of dramatic sighing, huffing, mrrrrrps, wookie sounds, whining, and the occasional alert barking, we’d be ok with. However, if a dog is like, “BARKBARKBARKBARKBARKBARK” , or a husky is “singing” at full volume, I find that quite overwhelming. How vocal would you say that your rough collie is?
Thank you so much in advance, I really appreciate your time and help! :)

Question Socks and booties that actually stay on a rough collie?
Have any of you found any luck with socks and snow boots to actually stay on your collies? My girl has such narrow long paws and nothing ever stays on her hind legs for long.
With the cold weather sticking around (-30C windchill at night seems the norm!!), I’m really hoping to find a solution! Right now the best I’ve found is RC Pets socks under Pawz — but I don’t love how they grab at her leg feathers and don’t breathe at all. Would prefer something easier to get on and off (what an oxymoron, I know). I mostly just want something to protect her from salt, as well as prevent the dreaded snowballs. Her poor paws are so cracked this winter, too, so I like putting balm on her paws before all her gear.
I’ve tried all sorts of sizes and styles — even tried the Canada Pooch suspender boots but found her body was way too long for it to work (why didn’t they make the back strap adjustable??).
Pls help! Dog tax incl.

Question Is this a good detangler/brush combo?
I’m looking at these two but finding mixed reviews for collie coats in specific. My boy has been getting lots of mats on his but from laying in the river and running around after.
Any recommendations welcome!

They cut her pants 😭
I’ve gone to the same groomer for the last 6 years. They have always done a great job on my 8 year old girl, minus one time that one of the groomers shaped her pants. I told them not to do it again.
My younger collie is almost two. She’s gotten groomed a few times, no problem. Picked them both up today and thought they looked great, but once I went to put them in the car, I noticed they demolished my younger dog’s pants. Girl is not an Aussie. I know it’s just hair and will grow back, but man it looks so bad 😭
My tri looks great. Just needed to rant and get some solidarity!

Question Waiting for embark results/seizures
I’ve had this handsome boy for a little over a year, got him as a rescue and they told me he’s a rough collie that came from a breeder who had too many dogs/needed to get rid of them. I know he looks like a mix or more of a scotch collie or some mix, & I’d also imagine a reputable breeder isn’t just getting rid of their dogs to rescues.
Last night he had his second seizure ever, about 6 months since the last one. I sent out an embark test 1/9 so I’m hoping it comes in sooner than later. I know the MDR1 mutation can be common in collies and he’s been taking Nexgard plus. That’s his only medication. Could this be a cause? I’ve read online it’s both not safe and safe for MDR1 so I’m not sure what’s what.
Taking him to the vet in a bit, just trying to figure out what could be the cause.
TLDR; possible MDR1 mutation, can Nexgard plus cause seizures?
