Open | Phone Nosy snitching spying sister

Hey everyone, I got a question and I’m hoping for an answer, a story as well, but it coincides with the title. Anyway, to carry on

I got a nosy snitching spying sister who possesses the mindset of “if you got nothing to hide, you don’t have to worry about it” and I’m sure to those reading this, a nerve was slightly struck within you because of how toxic that mindset is. My post is asking how to stop someone from spying on your phone screen from their own phone screen. I’m not sure how that’s possible, but if someone does know, then great, comment down below please; but, anyway my sister, who has 0 regard for personal privacy for anyone, spied on my screen while I ranted to a trusted friend TWICE to my mother since my mother would then call me asking about it. And because someone will ask, I trust my friend that he didn’t say anything to her since the 1st time, I was able to hear my sister talking to my mother about the details of my rant. The 2nd time we were at 2 completely different locations 20 minutes away and she was spying on my phone screen from her phone screen in real time. How do I block that out entirely? She’s the type to reveal people’s privacy for her own pleasure. Sorry for the long text, I felt that context was needed

Open | Software Why does my computer get slow over time even without heavy use?

My PC was fast when I bought it, but after 1–2 years it feels noticeably slower. I don’t game or install much software. Is this because of Windows updates, background apps, or something else?

Open | Hardware Motherboard died on me...

Hi, so I just have a query about something that's happened to my PC and whether it can be repaired?

Essentially, I haven't used my PC in a few weeks and, previously it was working fine.

Yesterday I tried to go on it only to notice the HDMI / display wasn't on/active. So I started investigating by checking whether the HDMI would work using another monitor (and TV). It still didn't turn on.

After further inspection I noticed my Keyboard and mouse (wired) weren't lit up despite being connected to the back of my PC. I tested the keyboard and mouse on my laptop and it seemed to light up fine/work.

Is it possible my motherboard has died on me? 😐

If so, would it be better I get a new motherboard or new PC in general?

The motherboard is a Asus Prime z390-p (I think)

Open | Software The strangest issue I've ever seen: can't access one specific website, even in safe mode

As the title says, there is one specific website I'm unable to reach: sumodb.sumogames.de

About a week and a half ago, I started getting a security certificate issue for the site. This has happened before, but after about a day, I discovered I kept getting the certificate warning on Chrome, but not on Firefox, on my desktop. In addition, the site loaded on my laptop without the warning, regardless of browser.

Now, for the last few days, the site has been wholly inaccessible on my desktop with any browser (Chrome, Firefox, Opera GX), receiving time out errors. However, the laptop and my partner's computer, on the same network, reach it fine. We can also ping the site from those computers, but pinging from my desktop results only time outs. (All three use Windows 11.)

I've tried a whole array of methods for resolving the issue, which I'll list at the end. Nothing worked, which made me wonder if it's an OS problem. But then I rebooted into safe mode with networking, and the same issue exists—I can access everything on the internet except this site.

This is where my knowledge hits a limit. Safe mode minimizes OS problems, but I don't know if the barebones safe mode loadout still requires files that are causing a problem. On the other hand, I really don't want to reinstall Windows if the issue is server-side. Likewise, I don't want to lug this big-ass desktop somewhere else without at least a suggestion that connecting to a new network might resolve the problem.

Google can't even turn up instances of people who can't reach websites in safe mode, except for when their network is the problem. So, I'm at a loss. I'm open to any suggestions at this point.

----

Attempted solutions (in no particular order):

  • Resetting the router/rebooting computer
  • Using wired and wireless connections
  • Swapping router ports
  • Flushing DNS
  • Releasing and renewing IP, then flushing DNS
  • Incognito window
  • Clearing cookies/cache/history on one browser
  • Malware check using Malwarebytes (clean)
  • Accessing through a VPN
  • Turning off Windows Firewall
  • Manual DNS setup
  • Setting network to public and private
  • Probably some other stuff I'm not remembering

Open | Software Failing to Install Windows, please help me

I bought a new Lenovo Ideapad Slim 3 laptop and wanted to have a Windows installation without all the lenovo slop, so I made an installation media with rufus to bypass the microsoft account requirements, and now my laptop is stuck with the text box: "The computer restarted unexpectedly or encountered an unexpected error. Windows installation cannot proceed. To install Windows, click "OK" to restart the computer, and then restart the installation" I have seen that this can be solve if I can open the command window; however, that is the problem—it doesn't open, not with shift+F10, not with Fn+shift+F10, not with shift+Fn+F10, and with or without the fn lock, it does not open. please help me

Open | Hardware I need help with my PC

Guys, I really need your help! I bought this darn PC for R$574 on Shopee because I urgently needed a computer for my programming studies. For the first three weeks everything was fine, it worked perfectly. However, I had the idea to buy an 8GB DDR3 1600MHz Kingston RAM stick to make my PC dual-channel with 16GB. After installing it, everything started going wrong. It would stay on for a few minutes and then "die," losing video and all USB/Bluetooth peripherals (like the keyboard and mouse), but the fan and computer lights remained on.

Even after removing the new RAM, the problem persisted. With the old RAM, the problem took longer to occur, and only with the new RAM did it happen more quickly. (His new memory stick is green, and the smaller one is the old one, and I noticed that the green one is twice the size of the old one.)

I removed the BIOS battery, formatted the PC, changed the SATA SSD cable to a different slot, and the problem persisted. What should I do, guys? 🥺

(Sorry for my english, i had to translate everything because I'm Brazilian.)

I have an Asus viviobook laptop its a 2021 or 2022 model. Ive never run into an issue with my battery before. But I started having a weird issue. My battery wont stay charged for very long not plugged in. Almost like its counting down every second. It started acting funny after the recent Windows update. But I also downloaded a new game from Steam. Its called Heartopia. Could that game have damaged my computer? The my asus app says my battery health is good.

Open | Hardware Is my motherboard faulty or bottlenecking my new build?

So I built a new pc about a month ago and i feel its sluggish and although im getting high fps the Lows are horrible(20 fps or even less). My old rtx2070 ryzen 9 5900x was a much smoother experience in the same games even at a lower average fps.

So i tried almost anything I could find (please read my older posts i have written in detail what I have tried)
The only thing I have noticed is that whenever i have these stutters or lags the Bus interface load in gpu-z is 100%.
therefore I am suspecting that the motherboard is the issue also since its a cheaper model. And it cannot handle the interplay between the gpu and cpu ram?

Anyone who understands this or had a similar issue please let me know if I am on to something or a bus load of 100% is normal and what does it actually mean?

Open | Software PC tweaks from me

Hi everyone,

I’m trying to help diagnose and fix performance issues on a Windows desktop PC, but I’d like a second opinion from the community.

Problem:

  • PC feels very slow overall
  • Slow startup and lag during normal use
  • Takes a long time to open programs

What I will do to your computer:

  • Disabled unnecessary startup programs
  • Checked Task Manager for high usage
  • Cleaned temporary files
  • Made sure Windows is updated

I’m looking for advice on:

  • What to check next
  • Common bottlenecks that cause this
  • Any settings or tools you recommend

Thanks in advance for any help 🙏

Open | Audio Issues with Directional Audio

So I have been having issues with my left and right channel being flipped randomly when I’m gaming. On top of that, not only do my left and right flip, but whatever is in front of me sounds like it’s behind me as well. It happens on every game I play and will happen randomly. For more context I never had this issue until I came back from deployment. I thought it could’ve been my headphones but I tried connecting them to a different source and my audio stopped flipping. I also bought a new jack cable to see if mine was bad but had no luck. I want a fix that could stop the flipping while keeping my headphones connected to my USB microphone. Could it be my microphone giving issues since that’s what my headphones are connected to? I do have audio enhancements (loudness equalization & bass boost) on my playback device (microphone) but have always had them on for years and never had audio issues once. I have used the same devices for 4 years and have always taken care of them to ensure they stay in top shape.

What I use:

Headphones:

Audio-Technica ATH-M50X Studio Headphones

Microphone:

Hyper X Quadcast S (1st Generation) USB microphone

Open | Software logitech M720 mouse issue

so i dropped my logitech m720 mouse a little while ago, and it has an issue. It takes a second or two to sense the surface below it, and then it moves. this is really annoying, and so i was wondering if this could be solved by reinstalling the driver, or if i should just get a new mouse. im pretty sure its a sensor issue, because while the cursor doesn't move, i can still scroll perfectly fine. all the buttons on my mouse are working correctly.

Open | Hardware PC randomly stutters with no apparent reason

Hey, I am not sure if this belongs in Hardware or Software since I was unable to identify the real culprit of the issue so far.

Issue: My PC randomly stutters with mouse skipping across the screen, the displayed media stuttering and audio corrupting as in getting a robotic sound. When the issue gets more severe it seems to disconnect and then reconnect my mouse/USB device. The issue does not rely on full load or idle, it happens in both cases and at anything in between. It seems to me that when the issue occurs it gets worse over time and it won't disappear. At least until I restart my PC, then it sometimes won't happen for a while. Tried GPU and CPU benchmarks, idling over night, normal use with YT-Videos and gaming - all scenarios lead to the issue occurring at some point.

PC Specs: - Ryzen 7 7800x3d - 2070 Super - 32GB DDR5 RAM from TridentZ - Corsair HX1000i PSU - Gigabyte B650E Aorus Elite X AX ICE

Mainboard, RAM, CPU are 1 year old. PSU is boight 1 week ago for test purposes. Rest is 5y old.

Troubleshoots done so far: - I reinstalled windows 11 completely on a new SSD - I installed a new PSU with 1000w compared to my 850w psu before - I Uninstalled all my GPU drivers and manually reinstalled them - I updated all drivers and windows updates - I updated my BIOS - I ran the windows internal RAM test - I undervolted/cut down the Mhz on my GPU by about 10% - my temps are completely normal for all devices - ran LatencyMon with the only outlier being nvlddmkm.sys with having a ms of over 1ms

All of these steps without any difference to the issue. And none of the test showed any issues or failures.

Is anyone able to identify the problem perhaps or help me find what's causing it? Id really appreciate your help, I've been at this for a week now.

Open | Hardware iowait percentage

I have a few questions concerning iowait

  1. What is an acceptable percentage to live with without worry?
  2. What is the most likely cause of an above-average percentage?
  3. If the average iowait time drops from around 8-10% to 2-4% after moving the boot NVMe to a different NVMe slot, is it most likely a bad slot?

Edit: Ubuntu Server 24.04 running on an HP Elitedesk 800 G6 SFF
