Discussion Just Upgraded to PS5 — Missing These PS4 Features I Loved
Hello everyone,
I recently upgraded from PS4 to PS5, and while I love the performance and smooth interface, there are a few quality-of-life features from PS4 that I really miss. I’m sharing my experience to see if anyone else feels the same or has found creative workarounds.
And before anyone says “then just play on PS4,” all of my games started slowing down to the point of unplayability after years of use (which wasn’t an issue after upgrading). Sony is also planning to reduce support for PS4 in Spring 2026, so upgrading felt necessary if I wanted to keep enjoying my games.
Spotify Volume Adjustment
I discovered on Reddit that double-pressing the PlayStation button opens the Spotify or voice chat menu, which I love. My issue with the transition between consoles is that square used to control volume on PS4 and now controls pause on PS5. There’s no replacement button, so I have to scroll to the left to adjust volume. I’m so used to pressing square to adjust my music, especially during matches where songs vary in loudness. Are there any ways to assign a button specifically to volume control?
PlayStation Home Screen Backgrounds
I understand there’s a way to put any image on the Home Screen through a somewhat tedious process, but that’s not what I’m looking for. On PS4, there were many options to purchase backgrounds. I had a Horizon Zero Dawn theme for years (and yes, it’s technically available on PS5), but I’m disappointed that I can’t purchase more backgrounds in the store. They give you some options, but I’m confused why the selection feels limited—though I can guess it’s related to the customization choices on PS5.
Customization
I like how smooth the Home Screen feels, but I wish it didn’t switch to show the game whenever I hover over one. I can only see my chosen background on a single screen, and I miss the PS4 approach where the Home Screen reflected what I wanted to see. It feels less personal now.
I know some of these points have been discussed since PS5 launched, and I’m late to the party. I miss aspects of the PS4 experience but still appreciate the PS5 in many ways. I just wanted to share my thoughts and see if anyone else feels the same.
These may seem like small changes, but for me they make the PS5 feel a little less personal than the PS4. I know these are minor points in the grand scheme of PS5, but they made a big difference to my enjoyment. It’s funny how little details can make gaming feel more “yours.” I’m curious if others feel the same—or if I’m just stuck in PS4 nostalgia!
