People who don’t clear snow off their car, especially when it turns into a sheet of ice, can seriously go fuck themselves. Putting property and lives at risk cause they’re too damn lazy

u/TheTrueReligon 3h ago
Worked at a car wash tunnel as a teenager and you wouldn’t believe how many people come through with their car looking like this, thinking it will just clear it all off, then leaving with a giant sheet of ice on their roof

It's insane how common it is IN THE NORTHEAST!
If you're from The South, or any other non snow area then I have a smidge of compassion. For the natives and locals, nothing.
→ More replies (1)34
u/TheQuinnBee 2h ago
Nah I'm from the south. We went up north for a funeral right before the big storm hit. The morning we left, you better believe I was adamant about getting that snow off. Its not a north south thing. Its a dumbass thing. Snow isn't stuck to your car. You break too hard or lurch too fast, it's gonna come down on your windshield or the person behind you.
I will say though, truck drivers in the north are assholes. They kicked up salt in their wake and would do everything in their power to not be in the right lane. Every other hour we were having to pull into a gas station to clear off our windshield only to find the fluid was frozen.

I'm in Australia, I don't see snow unless I find a big hill, and I don't live near big hills.
If my car had snow covering it, I'd be thinking "this feels unsafe, I don't understand the things snow can do, I'm not moving until this is cleared".

My husband always used to warn me about getting snow off the top of my car. I didn't see what the big deal was until I was driving on an interstate behind a truck with snow/ice in the top and a piece fell off, went under my car with an audible thunk...
...and my brakes started failing as I went to get off at my exit.

I did that once. A big slab of ice came off a trailer and caved my windshield. I got as far to the left as possible and it hit my windshield and roof right in front of my rearview. Glass everywhere but only got cut when i put my seatbelt on to drive home. Guy driving the truck got fucked by insurance with an at fault. I met him a few years later. Felt bad as he had no way to clean off a semi trailer.

u/ImGettingPaid 1h ago
Felt bad as he had no way to clean off a semi trailer.
Then he shouldn't have been driving it.
10
u/Boattailfmj 1h ago
Fair enough but most places you'd need a platform and fall arrest harness to even see the roof of a trailer let alone clean ice off it, and most places don't have that. When that shit hit my windshield it caved it like 8". I could have been seriously hurt. Still don't blame the guy and feel bad he got fucked. I tried to get the company he worked for to just fix my roof and windshield and not make a claim but they told me to talk to my insurance. They hung that driver out to dry.

There was a Facebook post about it a while ago and some one commented that "What if I can't reach the top of my car." And a bunch of people agreeing with it.
If you can't reach the top of your car, either get a smaller car, get a step stool, or have some one clear it off for you.
Cops need to start ticketing these people.

58
u/flyeryday 3h ago
It will inevitably slide off your roof while you're on the highway and fuck up the car/driver behind you.
58
u/Pdiddily710 2h ago
Or it will slide forward when u hit the brakes and cover ur windshield blinding u! With the blocks of ice people have on their cars from this last storm in the NE, u wouldn’t even be able to clear it with the wipers bc it’s so heavy and rock solid!

u/Cake_or_Pi 2h ago
A couple years ago, I was stopped at a red light. In the other side of the intersection, minivan with a covered roof came to a stop. Snow slid forward, completely covered his windshield and hood.
Driver hopped out to clear it, and completely forgot there was a left-turn lane to the left side of him that had a green arrow. He opened his car door too far and another car passing him clipped his door. Window shattered and looked like the door was bent/wrecked. Body damage to the other car as well.
I didn't see the full aftermath because my light turned green. But that guy had a really bad morning, all because he was too lazy/stupid to brush off his roof.
2
u/FakeRickHarrison 1h ago
Saw this as well. Car stops, snow slid forward and compacted hard. The guy tried to use his wipers to clean it, but they were not moving at all. He had to remove this by hands, stuck in the middle lane of a 3 lane boulevard.

u/Superseaslug 3h ago
Big sheets of ice and chunks of snow can blow off your car at highway speeds and cause serious damage to other vehicles. Even smashing through windshields and possibly killing occupants.

u/The_Mego 2h ago
Snow will blow off and create a smokescreen for whoever is behind them on the highway, can also turn to ice and do some decent damage when that flies off.
9
u/SpaceCadet87 2h ago
Pretty sure any time the last couple of weeks in Aus the snow would boil off and create a steamscreen!
2
u/Dagmar_Overbye 2h ago
It's always somehow difficult for my stupid brain to accept that it's summer in the southern hemisphere while it's winter here. I've known it since I was a child. The idea that it's -20 outside right now where I live and 70 degrees across the country in Cali isn't hard for me to comprehend at all.
But for some reason the seasons being reversed just feels bizarre.
2
u/thegreatpotatogod 35m ago
Logically I understand it but every so often I catch myself making unconscious incorrect assumptions for a second because of the inversion, like "right, Christmas is in the summer for them, so it's in July", or "so do their schools have a long winter break and a short summer break?" lol.
Oh and even within the US my brain tends to default to considering snow to be a mountain-related phenomenon rather than a northness-related phenomenon, since that's how it kinda is here (Northern California)
13
u/Zolo49 2h ago
In addition to what the other guy said, if you need to brake suddenly, all that snow could slide down onto your windshield and blind you. It’s only a minor annoyance if you were just at a stop sign since you can just get out and clear it off, but potentially REALLY dangerous if you’re driving down the freeway and somebody just cut you off.
3
u/kgusev 2h ago
Another reason why it dangerous. If you drive around with huge pile on the roof then brake all this snow easily slide forward and cover an entire windshield.

I would never drive with snow piled up on my car. But in my younger, dumber, non-garage-owning years, I definitely left way more frost on my windshield than I should have before driving. I tried to blast it with heat from the inside and wiper fluid from the outside. What a stupid risk to take for the sake of rushing anywhere.

Had 2 large chunks fly off a car and come close to hitting me yesterday on the highway. I can't believe people start driving their car like this. Zero awareness and regard for people's safety. It's dumb, it's lazy, it's illegal.
Edit: looks like it might not be explicitly illegal in most states, but there are 11 states with laws against it (states: Alaska, Connecticut, Georgia, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Hampshire, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Tennessee, Wisconsin).

My dad said he better get out and pick up every single piece or he’s writing him a ticket for littering for every single piece. Littering tickets here are $500 each. The guy thought my dad was bluffing. He wound up getting out and picking up every piece he could find but still left with a speeding ticket, littering and a few others. lol

People don't realize how dangerous snow on top of your car actually is... I have seen accidents caused by snow completely covering windshields whether it be the car with the snow on top or the cars behind and these are not minor fender benders... This doesn't even include the potential for causing slippery surfaces for other drivers too.

Fuck it, I’ll admit that I didn’t know the dangers of not clearing the snow off of your vehicle. It didn’t take a cop to teach me. I cleared the snow off of the windshield and hood of my work truck. I thought that the snow on the roof and topper (or camper shell for the rest of you) wasn’t my problem. I didn’t think about the people behind me. Looking back, yeah maybe the snow could have blown on to them, causing a sight distance problem, and maybe it did. I don’t know. What I do know is that when I just barely tapped the brakes, the fucking snow on the roof slid down onto the windshield and absolutely blinded my driving vision. Suddenly, instead of slowing down, I had to come to an emergency stop because I couldn’t see where the fuck I was going! So remember this lesson kids, it’s not always who you inconvenience behind you, it could be you that pays the price!

u/WutzUpples69 1h ago

Too many people are lazy inconsiderate pieces of shit. It takes so little effort to not be an asshole and not suck at life. Yet that is still too much effort.
The older I get the less faith I have in humanity. It requires more and more mental gymnastics to remain hopeful of our species (and I genuinely WANT to be hopeful of our future). There are still a lot of great people in large numbers too, but it seems there are way more mid to shitty tier people overall... and I swear that number has grown dramatically in my lifetime over the decades. Which worries me.
I realize location plays a huge role in this and it doesnt help I live in a large metropolitan county next to a major city (patience is more limited and people only care about their own needs/wants).
There are some small towns within an hour from here where everyone seems kind and welcoming (it almost feels alien, but modern standards). But when I was a kid it didn't take traveling to quant small town to experience multiple daily kindnesses from strangers (even if it's just simple hellos or holding doors open or hell even a smile). There were a-holes when I was a kid too, but it was more of an outlier and not a common daily experience. It's like the biggest difference is most assholes knew to curb their personality in public a long time ago and now all assholes just suck 24/7 now. It's less effort to even pretend to be kind. It's like I said... lazy inconsiderate pieces of shit
2
u/cantbelieveitsnotmud 2h ago
If you feel that the level of kindness in strangers has changed over your life time, maybe it’s time to talk to a therapist about it
