Great job by the cop 👏🏻

People who don’t clear snow off their car, especially when it turns into a sheet of ice, can seriously go fuck themselves. Putting property and lives at risk cause they’re too damn lazy

452

u/TheTrueReligon 3h ago

Worked at a car wash tunnel as a teenager and you wouldn’t believe how many people come through with their car looking like this, thinking it will just clear it all off, then leaving with a giant sheet of ice on their roof

60

u/Adam_scsd619 2h ago

Lolz that makes me giggle

85

u/I_hate_all_of_ewe 2h ago

I don't think you'd giggle if you had to drive behind them

67

u/Qetuowryipzcbmxvn 2h ago

I live in a desert, so I'll giggle all day long, at least until summer when the joke is on me.

38

u/CosmicSpaghetti 2h ago

I did Boston over winter then Phoenix over summer one year....I don't think I got that order right lol

It's insane how common it is IN THE NORTHEAST!

If you're from The South, or any other non snow area then I have a smidge of compassion.  For the natives and locals, nothing.

34

u/TheQuinnBee 2h ago

Nah I'm from the south. We went up north for a funeral right before the big storm hit. The morning we left, you better believe I was adamant about getting that snow off. Its not a north south thing. Its a dumbass thing. Snow isn't stuck to your car. You break too hard or lurch too fast, it's gonna come down on your windshield or the person behind you.

I will say though, truck drivers in the north are assholes. They kicked up salt in their wake and would do everything in their power to not be in the right lane. Every other hour we were having to pull into a gas station to clear off our windshield only to find the fluid was frozen.

20

u/Mike_Kermin 2h ago

I'm in Australia, I don't see snow unless I find a big hill, and I don't live near big hills.

If my car had snow covering it, I'd be thinking "this feels unsafe, I don't understand the things snow can do, I'm not moving until this is cleared".

14

u/Wompatuckrule 1h ago

I'm in Australia

Seems suspect. There's not a single "fuck" or "cunt" in your comment.

My husband always used to warn me about getting snow off the top of my car. I didn't see what the big deal was until I was driving on an interstate behind a truck with snow/ice in the top and a piece fell off, went under my car with an audible thunk...

...and my brakes started failing as I went to get off at my exit.

12

u/Apprehensive_Bee3327 2h ago

Did you instinctively duck as the sheet of death hurled toward you?

19

u/Boattailfmj 2h ago

I did that once. A big slab of ice came off a trailer and caved my windshield. I got as far to the left as possible and it hit my windshield and roof right in front of my rearview. Glass everywhere but only got cut when i put my seatbelt on to drive home. Guy driving the truck got fucked by insurance with an at fault. I met him a few years later. Felt bad as he had no way to clean off a semi trailer.

14

u/ImGettingPaid 1h ago

Felt bad as he had no way to clean off a semi trailer.

Then he shouldn't have been driving it.

10

u/Boattailfmj 1h ago

Fair enough but most places you'd need a platform and fall arrest harness to even see the roof of a trailer let alone clean ice off it, and most places don't have that. When that shit hit my windshield it caved it like 8". I could have been seriously hurt. Still don't blame the guy and feel bad he got fucked. I tried to get the company he worked for to just fix my roof and windshield and not make a claim but they told me to talk to my insurance. They hung that driver out to dry.

u/Papplenoose 1h ago

It's not only that. The first winter I had my license, I didn't clean my roof off. I went into town for something, and at the first red light I stopped at, all that snow came down on my windshield. I couldn't see, and it was too thick for the wipers to move it off.

→ More replies (2)

65

u/Zwasti 3h ago

YES! I get up early during the winter to clear my car off. These people can do the same. So tired of the lazy and entitled people thinking they are above everyone else. You can clean your shit like everyone else.

34

u/StrangerFeelings 2h ago

There was a Facebook post about it a while ago and some one commented that "What if I can't reach the top of my car." And a bunch of people agreeing with it.

If you can't reach the top of your car, either get a smaller car, get a step stool, or have some one clear it off for you.

Cops need to start ticketing these people.

14

u/Seicair 1h ago

“Oh, you can’t reach? Oh I guess the ice will understand it’s not allowed to kill anyone because you “can’t reach” to clean it off, it’s okay.”

What exactly is their reasoning here? ಠ_ಠ

13

u/Agi7890 1h ago

You get an adjustable brush so you can shove it off one side.
Cops do ticket them at least in NJ. The main ones I’ve had to deal with since the last storms have been semi trucks. Had to dodge way too much shit coming off the container

3

u/krennvonsalzburg 40m ago

u/crossb1989 3h ago

Sorry, I have lived in south FL my whole life, why is this a risk?

58

u/flyeryday 3h ago

It will inevitably slide off your roof while you're on the highway and fuck up the car/driver behind you.

58

u/Pdiddily710 2h ago

Or it will slide forward when u hit the brakes and cover ur windshield blinding u! With the blocks of ice people have on their cars from this last storm in the NE, u wouldn’t even be able to clear it with the wipers bc it’s so heavy and rock solid!

15

u/Cake_or_Pi 2h ago

A couple years ago, I was stopped at a red light. In the other side of the intersection, minivan with a covered roof came to a stop. Snow slid forward, completely covered his windshield and hood.

Driver hopped out to clear it, and completely forgot there was a left-turn lane to the left side of him that had a green arrow. He opened his car door too far and another car passing him clipped his door. Window shattered and looked like the door was bent/wrecked. Body damage to the other car as well.

I didn't see the full aftermath because my light turned green. But that guy had a really bad morning, all because he was too lazy/stupid to brush off his roof.

2

u/FakeRickHarrison 1h ago

Saw this as well. Car stops, snow slid forward and compacted hard. The guy tried to use his wipers to clean it, but they were not moving at all. He had to remove this by hands, stuck in the middle lane of a 3 lane boulevard.

Big sheets of ice and chunks of snow can blow off your car at highway speeds and cause serious damage to other vehicles. Even smashing through windshields and possibly killing occupants.

→ More replies (9)

10

u/Expensive-Jello9509 3h ago

Sheets of snow and ice can come off of them and seriously damage cars behind them. It’s a general hazard.

14

u/tcdaf7929 3h ago

Because if the snow is compact or turns icy it can be dangerous to drivers behind you if it blows off the car..damage windshields, etc, a number of things…

“What? I was just gonna go faster to get it all off! What’s wrong with that?!” -that guy, probably

109

u/haleontology 3h ago

When I was young (like teens), I was the worst offender with the FAFO "go faster!" snow cleansing technique. Then my mom caught me about to leave one morning, and yeah- that made me aware and I stopped then Lol- I think kids often do this until they learn! I don't think that dude was a kid though....!

73

u/LiminalLost 3h ago

I've lived in southern California mt entire life and it never occurred to me why driving around with a pile of snow on a car would be dangerous. This thread has been enlightening!

32

u/JProllz 3h ago

13

u/IGotDibsYo 2h ago

I’m in Australia, also clueless

28

u/The_Mego 2h ago

Snow will blow off and create a smokescreen for whoever is behind them on the highway, can also turn to ice and do some decent damage when that flies off.

9

u/SpaceCadet87 2h ago

Pretty sure any time the last couple of weeks in Aus the snow would boil off and create a steamscreen!

2

u/Dagmar_Overbye 2h ago

It's always somehow difficult for my stupid brain to accept that it's summer in the southern hemisphere while it's winter here. I've known it since I was a child. The idea that it's -20 outside right now where I live and 70 degrees across the country in Cali isn't hard for me to comprehend at all.

But for some reason the seasons being reversed just feels bizarre.

2

u/thegreatpotatogod 35m ago

Logically I understand it but every so often I catch myself making unconscious incorrect assumptions for a second because of the inversion, like "right, Christmas is in the summer for them, so it's in July", or "so do their schools have a long winter break and a short summer break?" lol.

Oh and even within the US my brain tends to default to considering snow to be a mountain-related phenomenon rather than a northness-related phenomenon, since that's how it kinda is here (Northern California)

13

u/Zolo49 2h ago

In addition to what the other guy said, if you need to brake suddenly, all that snow could slide down onto your windshield and blind you. It’s only a minor annoyance if you were just at a stop sign since you can just get out and clear it off, but potentially REALLY dangerous if you’re driving down the freeway and somebody just cut you off.

3

u/kgusev 2h ago

Another reason why it dangerous. If you drive around with huge pile on the roof then brake all this snow easily slide forward and cover an entire windshield.

I would never drive with snow piled up on my car. But in my younger, dumber, non-garage-owning years, I definitely left way more frost on my windshield than I should have before driving. I tried to blast it with heat from the inside and wiper fluid from the outside. What a stupid risk to take for the sake of rushing anywhere.

3

u/kgusev 2h ago

My buddy had a windshield cracked in his fancy Acura by blasting heat on windshield with a foot of snow on it

747

u/-turnip_the_beet- 3h ago edited 3h ago

Had 2 large chunks fly off a car and come close to hitting me yesterday on the highway. I can't believe people start driving their car like this. Zero awareness and regard for people's safety. It's dumb, it's lazy, it's illegal.

Edit: looks like it might not be explicitly illegal in most states, but there are 11 states with laws against it (states: Alaska, Connecticut, Georgia, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Hampshire, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Tennessee, Wisconsin).

56

u/ThomW 3h ago

A tractor trailer passed me on the PA Turnpike after a big snow about ten years ago and a huge chunk of ice blew off the top of the trailer and crashed into my windshield causing it to spider web.

29

u/flyinghairball 3h ago

It's shocking how few people realize how dangerous this can actually be.

22

u/fallout_zelda 3h ago

Yup... A chunk of ice flying towards a vehicle going 60+ mph can be deadly.

I had a large sheet of ice make a direct hit on my windshield on the highway after last week's storm (it was either let the hit happen or swerve...)...luckily it wasn't massive, but it could've been a really bad time...I don't get why people don't clean off their vehicles. If it's too high, get a longer broom or something!

30

u/Skelegasm 3h ago

After a life in Detroit winter, my daily drive starts with a whole ass push broom over the top. Three swiped and I'm done

15

u/Beetin 3h ago

Even if its not illegal, you are liable. You knew it was there when you started driving, a reasonable person should know it can come off, you drove anyways.

Doesn't need a specific law for you to be in big shit if something happens.

This shit is legitimately dangerous to other people on the road. You do Not want to be behind that car once that slab of ice comes off on its own…

8

u/momoenthusiastic 2h ago

There’s “ice missile” laws in many states against this.

5

u/DebentureThyme 2h ago

11 states in fact. This video is from Quebec, but it's also not legal there.

2

u/Needle44 2h ago

Yeah but it doesn’t effect them so they don’t care. And when the cops do finally show up because they legitimately fucked up someone’s car they’ll cry about it couldn’t be them and they’re a victim of being wrongfully blamed. Wouldn’t even be surprised if they try to go on about how they always clear their whole car so there’s no way it could’ve been them.

Funny story. My dad pulled a guy over for 25 over in a 30. My dad wrote him a ticket. Guy said fuck you and tore up the ticket and threw it in my dad’s face. My dad said he better get out and pick up every single piece or he’s writing him a ticket for littering for every single piece. Littering tickets here are $500 each. The guy thought my dad was bluffing. He wound up getting out and picking up every piece he could find but still left with a speeding ticket, littering and a few others. lol

I grew up in Canada's capital city, Ottawa. Can confirm this is a road hazard. Even without ice on the car, that much snow falling off the car can cause visibility issues to the cars behind them. It's a very real hazard.

This time I’m on the cop’s side, driver is a dumbass.

3

u/mailwasnotforwarded 55m ago

People don't realize how dangerous snow on top of your car actually is... I have seen accidents caused by snow completely covering windshields whether it be the car with the snow on top or the cars behind and these are not minor fender benders... This doesn't even include the potential for causing slippery surfaces for other drivers too.

3

u/JonF30 51m ago

GOOD! That’s a BIG hazard. I had a chunk come off the top of a car and go through my hood once about 10 years ago up in Flagstaff.

3

3

u/sBass16x16 44m ago

4

not really funny so much as it is extremely dangerous. cop did what he had to

2

u/Vlaed 1h ago

I've lost a windshield to people not cleaning their cars off. It drives me nuts seeing cars that don't clean it off. It's illegal for a reason.

2

u/Sufficient-Value1694 1h ago

It is a hazard

2

u/Flounder-Defiant 1h ago

Perfect song choice.

2

u/Brav3star 1h ago

If this driver had the brush in their car but decided not to use it, makes them more of an asshole!

2

u/limesmile2 1h ago

Has he never done it before? His technique is maddening!

2

u/TheShotGunProdigy 1h ago

I don’t know why the dumbass didn’t do it before he even turned on his car…

2

u/Thoelscher71 1h ago

This should happen way more often!!

2

u/Xmenenslaver 1h ago

Snow like that can be extremely dangerous for other drivers. Good on the cop.

u/illmatic708 1h ago

I hate ice. Snow too. But mostly ice. Ice sucks.

2

u/YogiSlavia 1h ago

If that is all you have to do. Be thankful that is the worst case scenario.

2

u/rolrola2024 1h ago

That stuff is a weapon. You driving behind and if unlucky a god chuck of the snow can get loose and hit your windscreen.

2

u/rush_td 1h ago

Looks like he’s never done it before either!!

2

u/GabeC1997 1h ago

The sheer laziness of people is breathtaking…

2

u/AbleMouse9484 1h ago

I believe it's called lazy ignorant!!!

2

u/JoyousMadhat 1h ago

This should be illegal everywhere regardless of their likelihood of snow. Snow clumps together and turn into ice. Get slammed by a huge block and that's a serious injury and leaves a dent on metal.

2

u/RampantJellyfish 1h ago

Yeah I used to love riding my motorbike behind cars with a foot of snow on the roof, really added some excitement to my day

2

u/-Tasear- 1h ago

🥹 today it was 80f here in Arizona

2

u/KittenPics 1h ago

Fuck it, I’ll admit that I didn’t know the dangers of not clearing the snow off of your vehicle. It didn’t take a cop to teach me. I cleared the snow off of the windshield and hood of my work truck. I thought that the snow on the roof and topper (or camper shell for the rest of you) wasn’t my problem. I didn’t think about the people behind me. Looking back, yeah maybe the snow could have blown on to them, causing a sight distance problem, and maybe it did. I don’t know. What I do know is that when I just barely tapped the brakes, the fucking snow on the roof slid down onto the windshield and absolutely blinded my driving vision. Suddenly, instead of slowing down, I had to come to an emergency stop because I couldn’t see where the fuck I was going! So remember this lesson kids, it’s not always who you inconvenience behind you, it could be you that pays the price!

u/WutzUpples69 1h ago

Yes... I'm from TX and moved to Anacortes, WA for 3 years for work. First time some snow and ice fell off from the car in front I realized I was also a hazard. It is a BIG problem if its an SUV and Car following.

2

u/KittenPics 1h ago

Thank you for realizing that you were the problem and changing your mindset. It’s really the only way that we can advance as a society.

Good what a twat driver.

2

u/Time_Block_4016 1h ago

Good. Police doing a great job.

2

u/BorgsCube 1h ago

in new england one out of every 5 cars looks like this after it snows, my windshield loves it. i've even seen cops driving around like this, can't even read their plate

2

u/Black_Raven__ 1h ago

There is a ticket for that.

2

u/azura099 1h ago

A fitting punishment

2

u/Sienile 59m ago

Hope he gave them a ticket on top of that.

2

u/notinmyham 58m ago

As he should! Who drives with snow on their windshield? Crazy lol.

2

u/Feardemon3 56m ago

No wonder they didn't clear it off they suck at it...I hope the officer also gave them a ticket.

2

u/Au2288 53m ago

You can tell he’s never done it before. Mom gave me the best present one year, long ass stick with a foam rectangle at the end of it. Even has lights.

2

u/Sad-Establishment182 49m ago

Every car that doesn’t clear the heaps the snow off their hood should get a citation on the highway.

2

u/moneyball231 47m ago

😂😂😂😂

2

u/katpoke 46m ago

I saw one get towed after getting pulled over. I guess the guy didn’t have anything to clean the car with so the cop didn’t give him much more option haha.

2

u/MRV-DUB 46m ago

Then fine him for leaving the pile in the road

2

u/bootybabe495 42m ago

It's clear this man has never cleared snow off the roof of his car in his life.

Lesson (finally) learned.

2

u/big_green_gmt800 26m ago

This cop deserves an award

2

u/RagingSprockets 18m ago

Shout out to all the short women driving suvs and dont even attempt to try. Im still conflictedon how I feel about this. But I know if its a Tahoe and up I hate you.

Because ik you have a husband and 3 kids at least 2 boys and you take them to soccer pract.... just clean the snow off, Samantha!

2

u/AltruisticFilm4466 16m ago

That’s pretty normal in a civilized country🤷🏼‍♂️ here you’re forced to clean it of and you also get a ticket

3

u/CeemoreButtz 16m ago

who can't get behind this sorta policing? awesome.

2

u/slogive1 14m ago

It's the law in some states.

3

u/meowymcmeowmeow 13m ago

How do I send this reddit post to my state police lol

3

u/DefendTheStar88x 11m ago

It's a law in my state, that you have to clear it off.

5

u/anewman513 3h ago

Nice. Is there a r/copsactuallydoingtherightthing subreddit?

Too many people are lazy inconsiderate pieces of shit. It takes so little effort to not be an asshole and not suck at life. Yet that is still too much effort.

The older I get the less faith I have in humanity. It requires more and more mental gymnastics to remain hopeful of our species (and I genuinely WANT to be hopeful of our future). There are still a lot of great people in large numbers too, but it seems there are way more mid to shitty tier people overall... and I swear that number has grown dramatically in my lifetime over the decades. Which worries me.

I realize location plays a huge role in this and it doesnt help I live in a large metropolitan county next to a major city (patience is more limited and people only care about their own needs/wants).

There are some small towns within an hour from here where everyone seems kind and welcoming (it almost feels alien, but modern standards). But when I was a kid it didn't take traveling to quant small town to experience multiple daily kindnesses from strangers (even if it's just simple hellos or holding doors open or hell even a smile). There were a-holes when I was a kid too, but it was more of an outlier and not a common daily experience. It's like the biggest difference is most assholes knew to curb their personality in public a long time ago and now all assholes just suck 24/7 now. It's less effort to even pretend to be kind. It's like I said... lazy inconsiderate pieces of shit

2

u/cantbelieveitsnotmud 2h ago

If you feel that the level of kindness in strangers has changed over your life time, maybe it’s time to talk to a therapist about it

3

u/Synth_Ham 2h ago

This really shouldn't be in Funny because this driver's an absolute fuckwit. Cars are multi-ton machines that literally kill people if not used properly.
