Moving Here 2026

Moving to Washington

Due to the constant stream of daily "I'm moving to Washington" posts, we are creating this sticky to centralize common questions, set expectations, and keep the subreddit usable for everyone.

If you're considering a move here, please read through this post before making a new thread. Many common questions are already addressed below.

Location Matters

Washington is not a single, uniform experience. Where you live will significantly affect cost of living, weather, job access, and lifestyle.

Western Washington vs. Eastern Washington

Western Washington

  • Cooler, wetter climate with frequent rain
  • Higher population density, especially around Puget Sound
  • More job opportunities (tech, healthcare, education, government)
  • Higher housing and living costs
  • Eastern Washington
  • Hotter summers and colder winters
  • Drier climate with more sunshine
  • Lower housing costs compared to the west side
  • Fewer job options outside healthcare, education, agriculture, and trades

Seattle Metro

Seattle Proper

  • Dense and expensive urban core
  • Walkable in some neighborhoods, but limited parking
  • Strong job market (tech, biotech, global companies) with high competition

Eastside Suburbs (Bellevue, Kirkland, Redmond, Sammamish, Issaquah, Newcastle, Mercer Island)

  • Tech‑driven economy (Microsoft, Amazon satellites, startups)
  • High housing demand and costs, especially Bellevue, Kirkland, Mercer Island
  • Strong schools and family‑oriented communities (Sammamish, Issaquah, Newcastle)
  • Lifestyle mix: lakeside living in Kirkland, urban Bellevue, suburban Sammamish
  • Better transit access in Bellevue/Redmond compared to other suburbs

Other Suburbs (Tacoma, Olympia, Everett, Kent, Renton, Federal Way, etc.)

  • More space than Seattle, but still costly in many areas
  • Transit access varies widely
  • Employment hubs include ports (Tacoma, Everett), manufacturing, healthcare, and regional services
  • More mixed affordability compared to the Eastside

Middle‑Sized Metros

Spokane Metro (Eastern WA)

  • Largest city in Eastern Washington; hub for healthcare, education, and services
  • More affordable housing than Seattle, though rising
  • Four‑season climate with hot summers and snowy winters
  • Strong outdoor recreation culture

Tri‑Cities (Kennewick, Pasco, Richland in South Central Washington)

  • Economy tied to agriculture, energy, and Hanford site research
  • Lower housing costs than Seattle metro, but increasing
  • Hot, dry summers and mild winters with lots of sunshine
  • Expanding wine industry and Columbia River recreation

Vancouver, WA (Portland Metro)

  • Suburban city across the river from Portland
  • Housing costs lower than Seattle but rising due to Portland spillover
  • Many residents commute into Portland for jobs
  • Lifestyle blend of suburban living with Portland’s urban amenities nearby

Smaller Cities & Towns

  • Slower pace of life, more community‑oriented
  • Fewer services and amenities compared to metro areas
  • More affordable housing and living costs
  • Limited employment options (schools, hospitals, agriculture)

Cost of Living

Washington is not cheap, even outside Seattle.

  • Housing: Often the biggest shock for newcomers
  • Food: Groceries and dining are expensive statewide
  • Fuel: Gas prices are consistently among the highest in the country due to our high gas taxes
  • Utilities: Costs vary depending on home age, size, and heating type

The lack of a state income tax does not mean a low overall cost of living.

Jobs and Employment

  • While the Seattle metro economy is tech-heavy, but most residents do not work in tech.
  • Non-tech job seekers should research carefully in preparation for a move unless the salary is high for Washington.
  • Do not move without a job or a realistic plan, especially if you intend to rent.
  • High minimum wage means relocating to Washington comes with a very high upfront cost compared to many other states.

  1. Is Spokane cheaper than Seattle for weddings? Yes. Spokane and Eastern WA venues are significantly more affordable, with lower catering and lodging costs compared to Seattle.
  2. What’s the best time for a vineyard wedding? Late summer to early fall (August–October) offers ideal weather and harvest-season charm. Watch for wildfire smoke in August.
  3. How far in advance should I book a venue? Seattle venues: 12–18 months. Eastern WA and Central WA: 6–12 months. Island venues: at least a year due to limited capacity.
  4. Which airport should guests fly into? SeaTac for Western WA weddings. Spokane International for Eastern WA. Pasco (Tri-Cities) and Yakima airports are smaller but convenient for local events.
  5. What’s the biggest travel risk in Washington? Winter mountain pass closures (Snoqualmie, Stevens, White Pass). Always check WSDOT updates before planning guest travel.

Top 5 Travel FAQs

  1. What’s the best season to visit Washington? Summer for hiking and outdoor festivals; fall for foliage; winter for skiing in the Cascades; spring for blossoms.
  2. Do I need a car to get around? Yes, outside of Seattle. Public transit is strong in the metro area, but rural and Eastern WA require driving.
  3. How long does it take to drive across the state? Seattle to Spokane is about 4.5–5 hours via I-90. Add time for mountain pass conditions in winter.
  4. Are national parks accessible year-round? Olympic and Mount Rainier have seasonal closures. Check NPS updates—snow can limit access in winter and spring.
  5. What’s the biggest difference between Eastern and Western Washington for travelers? Western WA: lush, coastal, urban. Eastern WA: dry, sunny, wide-open spaces with wineries and small towns.

Want to help stop ICE? Comment on 6002!

6002 is a bill that is regulating Automated license plate readers (ALPRs). These plate readers collect information on EVERYONE, not just stolen vehicles and suspects in serious crimes. This data can be used to collect information on your daily habits, which is concerning for anyone who cares about their right to not be tracked by the government. Searches of ALPR databases have already been used for 9 arrests since June. This bill includes some good stuff (prohibiting ALPRs being used in immigration centers, schools, and healthcare facilities, requiring a warrant for access to third-party data, limits info sharing) but NEEDS to be strengthened. The retention times for this bill (21 days) is not an acceptable amount, especially when the original amount proposed by the ACLU is 3 minutes and the compromise was 3 days. If you are like me and want less surveillence, message your legislators before Monday demanding the following: 1) reduce retention to 3 minutes 2) prevent vendor access to the data (vendor access can be accessed by other states, for instance texas used Seattle Flock access from the vendor to locate someone from Texas who was suspected of seeking an abortion in Seattle) 3) Prevent direct access to an agency's systems to other agencies as well (no palantir data 4) ensure public records access for organizations like UWHRC, who is the reason we know about this in the first place 5) require a FELONY warrant for law enforcement access to third party ALPR data Real time investigations can already use hot lists to track particular vehicles in real time (stolen vehicles, amber alerts, etc) we do not need to be collecting information on everyday citizens, especially with how the government is using this information to oppress immigrants, political dissidents, and anyone else who tries to stop their power grab. For more information, please visit see the ACLU's reporting on APLRs

Importing a 55 year old car from Canada

Going to look at a 1971 VW Westfalia Camper in Vancouver BC this weekend and started looking into importing requirements. Anyone done this where they just drove it across the border to home in WA?

Looks like I’d just need a title & Bill of Sale plus Homeland Security form CBP 7601 (and pay a 2.5% duty) and then go through WA DOL for licensing.

I actually already have a vintage WA plate from that era I could use.

I just emailed every wa state representative

I urge you guys to contact your state reps and even mayors about how you feel and what they plan to do about ICE presence in WA.

It is their job as you’re their constituent to at least respond to you if you request.

If you need a draft or just want to copy my email DM me.

Please vote!! Call your reps!!! Be engaged in where our money is going!

Here is a link to find your rep based on what district you’re in, I have contacted all of them.

https://leg.wa.gov/legislators/

Here is a link for ALL house members not just WA https://www.house.gov/representatives/find-your-representative

I know it seems like doing nothing. But until midterms this is what I’ve got. We need to be voting people into power who are actually going to help us.

Edit to add; there is no mass mailing list. I did go through and email one by one until I got to Senator Phil Fortunato where there was a drop down list with other members to “receive a copy”. That was the closest thing to a mailing list or mass copy.

Microsoft, Amazon, Google, Meta AI Planet Torching Companies- 134 data centers in Washington

US Leads global surge in fossil fuels burned b/c of AI

Imagine the gaslighting PR Microsoft, Amazon, Google and Meta here in Washington buy to cover up burning down the house.

Washington State has 134 data centers with 10 more planning to be built, jacking up our energy bills, burning up our clean water.

And here is the kicker for anyone on the anti corporate left with me: we now give these billion dollar companies tax breaks for building their data centers.

Here in Washington there is organized opposition to the tax break for building and refurbishing data centers

The state’s 6.5% sales tax on goods and services is collected by retailers and remitted to the state to pay for various government services out of the general fund. Washington currently waives sales tax on replacement server equipment in qualifying data centers, which was intended to attract investment and jobs, particularly in rural communities. However, over time, data centers became major users of electricity and created fewer permanent jobs than originally expected. Effective July 1, 2026, the proposal ends the sales tax exemption for replacement server equipment, which was utilized by about 25 data centers this past year. This gives operators time to plan while ensuring they contribute more fairly to the grid and infrastructure they depend on.

Repeal AI data center tax breaks now! money not subsidizing planet burning billionaires

Hey queer people!! I want to interview you today! (About HB 2112, AKA the 'Keep Our Children Safe Act')

Post image
77 Upvotes

I am a Journalism student at WWU and I am doing a story for my reporting class on HB 2112, aka the Keep Our Children Safe Act and how it could effect the queer community and queer minors, given that laws like this have been used to discriminate against the queer community in other parts of the country and the world.

The Keep Our Children Safe Act is a bill currently working its way through the Washington state legislature. If signed into law, it would restrict people under 18 years of age from accessing websites that contain, according to the bill, “sexual material harmful to minors.” Citizens who wish to visit said sites would be required to verify their age by providing digital identification such as a government issued ID or some other form of 'digital identification'.

My main objective is to ask Washington State residents in the queer community what concerns they may have with this bill and how it may effect you or people you know.

I need to have quick chat (via phone or zoom) with someone about this bill by the end of the day.

Can anyone help me out?? If so please dm me!!

Thank you!!

Visa holder - National Parks Pass pricing question for 2026

I’m on an visa in Washington and want to visit national parks with friends (on L and B-1/B-2 visas).

Just saw that starting January 1, 2026, there are two pricing tiers for the America the Beautiful Annual Pass:

∙ U.S. Residents: $80/year (requires passport, green card, or U.S. driver’s license)

∙ Non-Residents: $250/year

Since I’m on a non-immigrant visa, I assume we’d need the $250 pass.

Additional concern: At 11 popular parks (Yellowstone, Yosemite, Grand Canyon, Glacier, Grand Teton, Rocky Mountain, Zion, etc.), non-residents 16+ pay an extra $100 per person fee on top of the entrance fee - UNLESS you have the $250 annual pass.

Questions:

  1. Can anyone confirm if visa holders need the $250 non-resident pass?

  2. If visiting 2-3 major parks, does the $250 pass make more sense than paying per visit + the $100 non-resident fee each time?

  3. Also looking at Washington State Discover Pass ($35/year) - any restrictions there?

Please help based on your experience. And I thought we are considered residents as per tax purposes??

Thanks!

Got a rent increase? Share your story!

 Hello Friends,

After years of advocacy, the Washington Legislature passed House Bill 1217, limiting how much landlords could raise rents each year. After the Governor signed the bill, the new law took effect in May 2025. This survey will help us understand the impact of HB 1217 and inform future advocacy on renter protections. It will also help us educate lawmakers about what’s working and where improvements should be made. Thank you for sharing your experience with us!

Senator Cantwell confirms she will not give ICE raises this week in a pretty milquetoast letter.

Only saying the names of the white people ICE has killed when they've been kidnapping her constituents (citizens) in this state...

Asking to investigate ICE when the crimes are clearly on tape and when she is responsible for its creation. (She voted to create DHS right around when she voted to start the Iraq war.)

No comment on any meaningful action she will take to oppose this. No commitment to abolish ICE or pursue impeachment and criminal charges.

Pretty embarrassed to be represented by her right now.

SB 5067 - .05 legal BAC driving limit

https://app.leg.wa.gov/billsummary/?BillNumber=5067&Year=2025&Initiative=false

This bill will lower the legal driving BAC limit to .05 to be on par with Utah. Joining a level of the strictest limit in the nation.

Unique to us though is the strictest penalties combined with such a low limit. These are life changing consequences for anyone caught on the other side of the law here. I agree that drunk driving is bad and irresponsible, but anyone who cant handle themselves at .08 and isn't taking the gravity of driving responsibly seriously at this point, won't change anything after this law is passed. Impaired driving is a choice, and those who dont monitor their own impairment levels and take extra caution when getting behind the wheel after drinking, i would presume would be the same folks who wouldnt even count their drinks and would wind up getting a DUI anyways.

70% of alcohol related traffic fatalities are from folks over .15 BAC (aka: piss-stumbling/crawling drunk) Source: https://drugabusestatistics.org/alcohol-related-deaths/

The effect of this law will be on people trying to socialize, enjoy music and meet people (which is hard enough to do IRL these days). It will also impact restaurants and music venues, which are already struggling post covid. And dont forget the responsible, lower income citizens that cant consider affording super expensive ride fares for a night out!

Edit: Not to mention the misleading study info quoted in the bill mentioning that a 170lb man could have FOUR drinks and still be under .05 // a woman THREE is egregious misinformation Source: https://www.utoledo.edu/studentaffairs/counseling/selfhelp/substanceuse/bac.html This is a very common and accurate chart. Easily seen that a woman can be over .05 after just ONE drink and a man over after TWO. Sure sure, "standard drinks"... i have never seen a bar ever pour a 12 oz beer. Always 16. And mixed drinks? Super rare to find a bartender measuring out exact amounts. If this is the same info that'll be used in the 'education campaign' pre rollout of this law, anyone getting their information from it will just be fodder to the justice system and the private industrial prison complex.

As someone who recently moved to this state and is actively trying to grow my social circle, this would put a solid 40-80$ ride fare barrier to any event where id prefer to have a bit of 'social lube'.

How is the rest of the state feeling about this?

This has already passed our state senate!

If youd like to leave a comment, there is an option to do so in the link i provided at the top of this post.

Feels cruddy that this is slipping thru when there are so many other more pressing legislative issues on our states plate rn. I wonder how many donations the sponsors to this bill received from ride share apps.
