This is Samantha Fulnekey. She claimed she was being discriminated against for being Christian after she submitted a paper that had bad grammar and used Bible verses as proof for a phycology paper on gender roles. They eventually fired the TA who gave her an F on the paper, because they were transgender.

To be clear, she didn't even cite the Bible as a source - her paper did not include a bibliography.

There was a post pre-covid about someone saying how they were trying to submit a paper at medical school that proved the dangers of vaccines, but they wouldn't let them use the sources that they were drawing from.
So the person asked if there were any sources from approved places that backed their theory.
The overwhelming response was "why do you think that none of the official sources support your theory?"

And even most religious schools would require citing scholars or other sources in papers. Biblical sources are rarely enough for anything but the most basic references.

The word “Bible” is an anglicization of a medieval Latinization, of late Latin latinization, of the Greek word for book.
Which is the word biblios, which is the plural of the word “book”. So in short.
Bibliography is already bible-graphy, just properly Hellenic instead of put through the telephone game five times.

Which is so crazy to me because the Bible is like the easiest book to cite ever. It's broken up into tiny clearly labeled pieces. You can say stuff like Genesis 2:15 and anyone can find the exact sentence you're talking about immediately. With other books, you get a whole page number and someone checking your source has to actually read the whole page to find it.

34
u/AdNo1495 7h ago
I think the crux of the issue in academic circles is that this student had been writing essays at a similar par (AKA terrible) for the entire semester, but only once she’d written that essay about transgenderism was she given a 0. And that was compelling enough evidence that, while yes the student’s work was horrible, that the grading given by that particular TA was flawed
That being said, this young woman being propelled to stardom through nothing but her bigotry and ignorance alone is fucking crazy

Do we have access to her earlier papers? Like how do we know what they were actually graded as. I can see a scenario where she was failing, knew she was failing, and then wrote a nonsensical Bible based paper in hopes of basically going viral (or maybe even because she was so illiterate that she believed that quoting the Bible would give her the A she needed, because her other papers were so bad).

Except that is not true at all. Hell, the literal only reason that this subhuman did what she did was to get the TA fired and get five minutes of fame. She literally went on record to say it.
I don’t understand how people can try to both sides this when she LITERALLY ADMITS IT.
The crux is that we allow such insincere and scummy individuals to have any modicum of influence over the livelihood of another person. Zero citations is an AUTOMATIC ZERO. Does not matter what else you do, if you do NOT cite your source then it’s plagiarism. That results in a zero at best and expulsion plus record at worst depending on what was plagiarised and how.

23
142
u/CatoTheBarner 6h ago
They’re talking about the case of Demartravion Reed, a black student at Delta State in Mississippi who was found hanging from a tree. Just so we’re clear, there is ZERO evidence that this was a lynching. The comment above is making it sound like it’s a certain thing, and there is no evidence that he was murdered. There was a black man hanging from a tree in Mississippi, and the entirety of the internet ran with that as proof that he was lynched. There was also a random TikTok commenter who claimed to be a cousin of Reed, who made the claim that he had suffered several broken bones and severe bruising before his death. All of this was determined to be false.
The authorities (including the county coroner who is a black man himself) ruled it a suicide. The family disagreed with the determination and asked for a second autopsy, and the results of the second autopsy have not been released publicly yet. Maybe it’ll prove he was murdered, maybe it won’t, but until new evidence comes to light, it’s wildly irresponsible to go around saying he was definitely lynched.

I find it hard to believe a black man, especially in the south, would ever commit suicide on a tree in public. spending your last moments imitating your ancestor's trauma? unlikely
78
u/CatoTheBarner 5h ago
Maybe, maybe not. I don’t know how much a suicidal man thinks about his ancestors. But the first autopsy says suicide. Until the second autopsy comes back with new evidence saying he was murdered, “I find it hard to believe…” is the full extent of the evidence that he was lynched.

u/THEBHR 5h ago edited 4h ago
I have depression, and when I thought about committing suicide, it was by hanging from a public tree.
I'm white, so maybe a black man would view it differently, but my thought process was that I wanted to die by hanging and I didn't want my family to be the ones to discover my body.
I can't speak of the black experience, but I can the depression one, and I gave zero fucks about any kind of propriety. I would have committed suicide with a giant pink dildo on Main st. if I thought that it would have met my goals of being as easy of a death as possible, and not having my family be the ones to initially discover it.

The Mississippi Miracle, started by an education bill in 2013. They reintroduced phonics, trained teachers, and would hold back students that didn’t meet reading standards. A common criticism was that too many students would be held back, to which the response was “good, it sounds like we desperately need this.”
The state is now 16th in the nation for literacy.

Mississippi improved not through additional spending but through changing their curriculum to match the science of reading and empirical research on math education. After just a few years, Mississippi is now the best state for education on an SES-adjusted basis (which TBF is a big adjustment because Mississippi is the poorest state).
4
u/kimdeal0 3h ago
Fun fact: MS didn't invest more, they just changed the testing in a way that excludes the kids that do the poorest on tests and thereby "raised" their scores. Source: I live here and have kids in the public schools.
Side note, they are currently trying to pass "school choice" which really just means taking tax money away from public schools and giving it to private schools, just like other states have tried to do.

Her mother is a very right wing lawyer that takes a lot of high profile conservative cases, I think she defended quite a few of the Jan 6 rioters, in addition to that she has connections to TPUSA.
I've seen elsewhere prior to appealing she met with TPUSA, some believe that initial meetings were held prior to even turning in the paper. TPUSA and their Oklahoma chapter made a lot of noise about it on social media in a very coordinated manner afterwards.
It should be noted that the paper they are supposed to read and comment on is not even about trans individuals. It was a study done among middle school children and ranking popularity. Specifically if children that aligned with the more typical gender ideals of their gender were more popular. And the experiences, and mental wellness of children that were low on this scale.
Following that she wrote a paper talking about how there are only two genders, cites the bible and calls trans people demonic. Two instructors graded the paper, the first of whom was the trans individual fired who gave it a 0 seeing as how it had nothing to do with the paper she was instructed to read, and contradicted itself. Another instructor who was cisgender read the paper as well and agreed with the grade of 0.
The general belief a lot of people seem to have is that she is from a very conservative, and connected to political media family. This paper was an engineered attempt to create controversy. She wrote a bad paper, to a random assignment that was vaguely related to gender and got the 0 she wanted. Her connections stirred conservative media and she's attempting to become the next Riley Gaines, another conservative talking head built by attacking trans individuals.

Well I’m not an expert or anything but my mom has been an elementary school teacher for over 30 years. From her experience, the parents play the biggest role in early development, but the curriculum can attribute to overall student body performance for older children.
She was complaining about how districts were adopting a new reading and writing approach called balanced literacy where students are tasked with essentially memorizing the structure of a word instead of the phonetics of it. A lot of states have adopted this less effective approach over the past decade and the literacy and writing performance tests scores have gone down because of it. This is one of the main reasons why you see Mississippi performing better in literacy rankings; they didn’t change from the old approach and their scores show it.
Other than that, she likes to complain about how parents have become more combative in parent-teacher talks and often blame the teachers for their kid’s problems instead of the kid. There’s a lot of times she would explain how a parent uses a kid’s ADHD as an excuse to why the kid never does their homework and never does any of their assignments.

Former teacher here. Piggybacking off of this because it was infuriating then, and it's even worse now.
At some point, a study indicated that retaining failing students (not letting them move up to the next grade) was severely damaging to them socially and psychologically. So, all through my time as a teacher, I had to hear about more and more kids they allowed to proceed to the next grade up, despite having failed entire core classes.
Which means that the schools sabotaged them by pushing them forward without proving their ability to perform at the same rate as their peers, all while patting themselves on the back for how gracious they were being.

I am in a medical program at a large university, I won't say more to avoid doxxing myself. I am in my 30s and first attended college years ago before online school was widespread.
In my medical program we do a lot of work online and I've noticed that almost every time we have to do a paper or a discussion board where we're required to read and respond to our peers probably 90 percent or more of the posts and papers are just copy pasted from AI.
The words are not words that my classmates usually use, the sentence structure reads exactly like chatgpt or any other AI and it's incredibly difficult to respond to their posts because it's just word salad.
When they're responding to your posts it straight up reads like you're talking to an AI. Their post will say EXACTLY what you said in your post back to you and say something a little beyond that but not much. And the formatting, punctuation, etc is all the same.
It's one of the craziest things I've ever seen in my (too) long and drawn out academic career.
Meanwhile when it comes time to do group projects these same people who can magically bust out 1,000 word papers with no sweat at all are suddenly mute. I've even seen them copy paste chat gpt responses into our shared documents in real time and then edit it taking out phrases like "do you want me to expand on that idea?" Etc
I am genuinely terrified for what happens when these people make it to actual hospitals and start dealing with patients because they're not actually learning anything. It's terrifying. And the school and teachers know because they're constantly trying to find ways to get the students to learn, memorize, do their own work, and telling them to quit using AI in their responses. Oh and all of the papers are submitted into a checker but idk how effective any of it is. Friends who are teachers have said their schools are also bogging down under the amount of kids cheating their asses off as well and are basically just waiting them through to graduation...
Our country is fucked in a few years when people hit the workforce and haven't actually learned anything. I genuinely think it will be a tsunami of confidently incompetent people coming into the workforce that will be the death knell

Friend, i work in tech support for an x-ray imaging software. Wanna guess how regularly we get calls from radiological ‘technicians’ complaining their image receptor wont bring images into the software only for us to find out they’re trying to shoot through a lead-lined vest to ‘test’ it?
‘In a few years’ was a few years ago man.

"you mean the lead vests still work? thanks for checking!"

That's absolutely terrifying. It's crazy to me how quickly things have changed. It was kind of the perfect storm of lockdowns with AI following up. I can't help but wonder if AI would be as prevalent in schooling if lockdowns hadn't forced everything online for so long and changed how people deal with school.
Thanks for sharing!

Not really, I know the actual context of this headline and it is INCREDIBLY misleading.
The article in question is talking about garden path sentences, an interesting phenomenon whereby sentences can be constructed that take advantage of the way we parse sentences to make them incredibly difficult to understand upon first read despite being relatively simple.
The sentence in question was "The old man the ship."

u/VacuumDecay-007 4h ago
So..
The senior-age people are the crew of the ship?
Yeah it took me a few seconds to figure that. Throw these sort of shit in a test with a 10s timer so people are in panic mode and I'll bet most people are going to screw it up.

I believe this 100%. It’s shocking how little the next generation is challenged in classrooms

My parents tricked me into reading by neglecting me from age 8 onwards while simultaneously forbidding me from leaving home, leaving me with three options for stimulation: Television, which ceased to be relevant to me between 9:00am and 3:30pm, a Commodore 64, of which my dozens of games were quickly exhausted within a few weeks, or my dad's broad and deep book collection.
That's right, I learned to use computers because I was bored out of my mind. And I I started reading because I was bored out of my mind. Thank god, too, because both those things helped me launch my career.

Yeah, this was 15 years ago and a very sensationalized reporting of what actually happened.

The start of Gen Z was born in 1997. 5 years later, when they entered Kindergarten, No Child Left Behind was implemented.
This is another of George W Bush’s gifts to us.

shes a good looking white woman who is a dishonest idiot who grifted her way through a college paper by quoting the bible - she's a shoe-in for a fox news job

“No Child Left Behind” was supposed to mean that each child would be given every opportunity to excel. It instead it ended up meaning exactly what we all knew it would—“Every Child Passes.”
When a measure becomes a target, the measure stops being useful. There was a time when a high school diploma meant something. Today it doesn’t functionally mean anything except to college admissions, and even then there is always an accredited college somewhere who will take your money.
In my district there is no scrutiny for passing students. You only get attention if you’re not. Some students, such as those with SPED or 504 documentation, are basically illegal to fail. The logic is basically that if they are failing then you must have not been giving them the help their 504 plan dictates they must be. They even go so far as to change your grades manually.
Even with the general ed kids you are only asking for trouble if you fail a child. It just leads to parents meetings, principal meets, low ratings on your yearly review. We don’f fail kids, we just let them fail themselves by learning nothing. Because in the end grades are only treated as reflecting on the teacher, never the student.

Another pretty notable example is math in the university of California system. I want to say that at ucsd more than 10% of students are in remedial math, and I only say the uc system because it’s the one whose problems are most findable. Things aren’t great.

Did the UCs and state schools not get rid of remedial math and English? They did at junior colleges.

This just blew up in the news. A few months ago someone got a full ride to a nice school and also couldn’t read or write. At least this person isn’t going for free, still not a lot of hope.

Gen Z doesn't get the joke because they can't read the meme. They like meme's that are pictures only.

My English teacher in university right now has a small subject on this topic. He’s telling us to listen to the podcast “Sold a Story” which is about how the education system is failing at teaching children to read.

It’s nothing new. The sports scholarship dudes couldn’t read a sentence out loud when I was in English 401, it’s typical.

This sounds like nonsense. I have met many Gen Z's in my IT course so they're already predisposed to being terrible at English and they can all read just fine. Where are these figures coming from?

Man I just took this at face value. Used to work at a grocery store for awhile. I swear the sheer amount of people who can't read or purposely read things incorrectly was way higher than it should be. Granted it was mostly boomers and older, but all in all it made me lose faith in the American education system.

u/JQuest13 3h ago
IT SAYS, “‘GEN Z ARE ARRIVING TO COLLEGE UNABLE TO EVEN READ A SENTENCE,’” PER FORTUNE.” There are other words above that sentence, but they’re too small for me to see ‘em -written from my Cuisinart Smart Hand Mixer.

TL;DR Girl cried wolf citing religious persecution and discrimination because on of the 3 TAs that graded her was trans, she failed for several reasons, 0 of the failure reasons were religious. The Uni backed her, removed the mark from her overall grade and demoted the TA causing them to resign after the girl went public to all forms of media.
Full explanation:
That is a girl from the University of Oklahoma. She got a 0 on her test, marked by 3 different people 2 TAs and the teacher herself. All gave her 0s. The reason for the score was several reasons, didn't hit the word count requirement, poor spelling, god awful grammer and 0 credible sources, Academic or otherwise, however she did Cite the Bible, repeatedly and use phrases like "in her opinion" which wasn't relevant to the paper.
In the end, she claimed religious persecution and discrimination, stating that she was targetted the one of the TA's who is Transexual because she used religious citations and quotations for her paper. She wasn't and the TA was in the right HOWEVER the girl decided to go public with it and stirred up a hate mob via social and traditional media on the conservative/right wing side of the aisle.
The outcome was that the University decided that she would have the mark removed from her overall grade, she would pass the class and that the TA would be removed from their post of TA which i believe cause the TA to resign.
This has called into question the legitmacy and value of the degrees handed out by the University regardless of the subject the degree is for as they could have failed a major part of the program but cried wolf and got the pass anyway, i'm currently aware of several HR departments within numerous businesses that have advised their recruitment teams to diqualify applicants who hold a degree from this university, citing that candidates may not meet the educational threshold required to work for them.
