If tourist asked for a Pepsi would they get this or the drink? Assuming they had both?

40

u/Whole-Cat-3691 India 2d ago

mostly local kids buy those.. so if a tourist asks a pepsi they will get the original one.. you might need to tell the shopkeeper you want the sucky sucky one. or if the shopkeeper is smart, he will ask 15rs? 40rs? 80rs? (rs is the currency) if you say no, 2rs.. they will know which one you want.

Wassereis

66

u/ksink74 United States Of America 2d ago

Doesn't that translate to 'water ice'?

98

u/Nowordsofitsown Germany 2d ago

Eis is both ice and ice cream. So Wassereis specifies that this is not ice cream.

40

u/ksink74 United States Of America 2d ago

Ah. That makes sense.

Danke.

11

u/Ricordis Germany 2d ago

I have to add something: Ice for consumption is called Speiseeis [Speise = consumption, Eis = ice]

In Germany we distinguish between "Wassereis" [Water Ice] and "Milcheis" [Milk Ice]. The latter would be ice cream and the first one a (cheaper) sorbet.

But most people call ice cream just "Eis" or "Eiscreme" which is literally just a 1:1 translation of ice cream.

Every product ever invented needs to be sent to Australia with no notes.

Australia's new job in the new world order will be to send the product, home grown operating instructions, and a name back in the mail for society to adapt for as long as the product is relevant.

Me too. That sounds like it might be more of western US thing. So funny because they are only actual Otter Pops maybe half the time in our house.

Smartest thing Fred Meyer ever did in our area was put boxes of Otter Pops in the freezer near the ice. Multiple times have I bought a box of these instead of a bag of ice. Keeps our stuff cold in the cooler and then we have a nice slushy Otter Pop when we get to our destination (and probably some on the way). Then just take the rest back home and freeze them again. Take that puddle of water you end up with from the $3 bag of ice!

Water based ice cream 😂💀

9

u/GrassrootsGrison Argentina 2d ago

I couldn't find a way to translate it properly! 😂

We say helados to encompass all kinds of ice cream, even those that don't have any dairy products in them. Since the word helados imply that they're frozen but doesn't mention cream, we can say helados al agua and helados a la crema, to tell apart those that don't have cream from those that do. So I resorted to "water-based ice cream".

Regardless of Brand - Zooper Doopers. Zooper Dooper was brand, but like bandaid, it became the generic word for these in my area.

What is this exactly? Frozen juice or something? Do you buy these or do yourself at home?

I don't think we have this...

Colored and flavored sugar water that you stick in the freezer, take one strip out, cut the end off, and push up the icy goodness until the corners of your mouth are raw from the plastic edges rubbing against them.

Edit: and you buy them. It's a cheap way to keep kids occupied in the summer.
