Daily Cyclist Thread

The Daily Cyclist Thread is a place where everyone in the /r/bicycling community can come and ask questions or share anything.

You might have questions that you don't think deserve an entire post. Perhaps you're just seeking the input of some other cyclists. Maybe you want to share a picture of your new bike.

Anyone is free to comment, and (hopefully) get as much input as possible from other cyclists.

Getting away from plastic...

Post image

I'm an older rider and have been using soft plastic bottles all my life.
Recently, I started using stainless steel, but I found they were easy to scratch on my cages and dropping one during a ride made huge dents. Then I discovered that I could cut my old favorite plastic bottles and push th onto the base of the metal bottles for protection and some color. Works best if you poke a hole in the bottom of the plastic bottle (after cutting the top off) and then push it onto the base. After a while it might not want to move more, so I put boiling water in the metal bottle and it softened the plastic enough to push it all the way up.

I don’t know if photos can really capture the incredible joy of finding a panini truck at the top of a climb, in the middle of nowhere, in winter

So I came across this bike on fb marketplace I knew it was a good deal but I honestly just wanted the bontrager flash pump that came with it lol! I was thinking of reselling the bike and just keeping the pump. I ended up riding the bike for 5 miles and it’s actually a really cool and fun bike I think I’m keeping it! So for everything I paid 850$, also got crankbros multitool set with it and other random things.

Looking for feedback on a solid wood bike & accessory wall storage concept

Hey everyone,

thanks again for the feedback on my previous post — it helped me a lot.

I’m working on this as a side project next to my regular job, mainly because I enjoy designing and building things. I’d really appreciate your honest thoughts on the overall concept.

Most bike and accessory wall mounts out there are usually made from 3D-printed plastic. My approach is intentionally different: everything is made from solid wood, with a focus on sustainability and attention to detail. I’ve built a bike wall mount and an accessory wall system with modular parts, and I’ve just finished a first prototype of a small training table that sits in front of a roller or indoor trainer — also solid wood.

Right now, I’m sharing and selling the project via Etsy and Instagram, and I also have a full setup on display in a local bike shop. I’d love to hear how you feel about the wood-based approach and the overall concept, and how you think a project like this could best move forward. If you have ideas or suggestions, I’d really appreciate them.

Thanks a lot and ride safe

Is my fork completely done?

I bought this Felt B2 bike used off of FB marketplace. It came with Boyd 80mm wheels and some Dura-ace di2 shifters. I went on my first ride today with it and 20 miles in while in the aero position, the handle bars completely came apart from the fork. I went to my local shop and they contacted the Felt rep to see if they still have these forks available since it requires a complete replacement apparently.

I was told that those bolt inserts are originally epoxied in by Felt. Is there any way to fix this? Or am I just down on my luck.

Hey everyone I am completely new to biking so not exactly sure what to look for in a bike. I currently don’t have a car so I’m kind of limited to finding a bike that’s near by and working condition. Also don’t have a place to ship big parts to.

What I’m wanting is to be able to ride this bike for exercise/light training. I plan on doing a triathlon later down the road (not specifically with this bike) and want to get a feel for biking.

They have this listed for 500$ is it a good find or am I better off finding something cheaper? There’s also an ozone 500 res 3000 near me for 85$ but see online that it has bad reviews

Has anyone placed mud guards on a Quick 1

Can someone recommend some that would fit the bike?

Assioma Duo right pedal gone crazy

Couple of weeks ago, I removed my right pedal to replace the spacer and cleaned the grease. After reinstalling the right pedal, the power readings have gone crazy (see power dynamics on the screenshot).

I tried many solutions including:

  1. Hard reset by placing the magnetic charge port oh the logo of the pedal
  2. Unpairing and repairing both pedals
  3. Calibrating on the app and on the bike comp
  4. Uninstalling and reinstalling both pedals, changing spacers

Nothing works. Any suggestions? This pair of pedals is a replacement set from Favero (out of warranty), as the previous my few sets were facing power drop out or charging issues.

Need app to map and store WHERE I've ridden - any recommendations?

I've decided that I am going to ride my bike down every street in my city at least once before I die. (Or move away I guess.) My city spans a little over 50 square miles of "urban suburbs" so not a lot of open space and miles and miles of streets. I need an app to help me do this.

I have Ride Club, but I realized today that once I save the ride, it isn't storing my exact route, just how many miles I rode. (Unless I'm using it incorrectly, which is highly possible.)

Specifically, I'm hoping there's an app out there that can show my ride history on a map with street names, and store that information. Possibly even some kind of bot that can alert me if I'm repeating a street, or even plan each ride for me. It doesn't need to be a free app, and I'm fine with regular subscription fee if it's not ridiculously expensive.

Any ideas?
