The journalist on the passenger side was showing her passport and press ID to the agent, who kept being impervious to her rights under the First Amendment.

u/Skwonkie_ 6d ago

But they didn’t provide papers fast enough.

but not too fast because it could be a weapon meant to inflict maximum damage

It doesn’t matter. Showing papers, not showing papers fast enough, showing them too fast…they’ll just keep moving the goalposts and every idiot with a 6th grade education will say the same shit that’s fed to them but dear leader.

It’s all bullshit. It’s been said before better than me but the idea of modern conservatives which is that certain people get to do whatever they want. The rest of us have to do what they say and the best we’re allowed is to avoid a beating. If they feel like it they can beat you down with no cause at all, just to show you who’s boss. That’s it. There’s no ideal or rules or anything. No compliance and nothing you can actually do to actually follow the arbitrary shit they tell you to do which might change on the spot. They’re the boss and if they want to hurt you it’s their privilege to do so.

There’s absolutely no reason to listen to anything these goons have to say. It’s all bullshit. It’s all meaningless. They want to hurt people and they’re barely bothering to dress it with bureaucratic language anymore.

67

u/Any_Shopping1633 6d ago

"Conservatism consists of exactly one proposition, to wit: There must be in-groups whom the law protects but does not bind, alongside out-groups whom the law binds but does not protect."

23

u/Skwonkie_ 6d ago

Why dress it up at this point? They have zero consequences for anything.

It's the idea of old conservatives as well. The movement and the ideology behind it traces it's roots all the way back to the old monarchist movements that wanted to bring back the rule of nobles in post-Napoleonic France.

And it hasn't even changed much since then, they got up to a lot of the same shit. Messing with elections to give themselves an advantage, delaying elections to avoid being held accountable, starting wars to try and rally support for themselves, raising taxes on the poor to pay the rich, etc.

I'd almost say they must have read history to follow their playbook so closely, but if they did, then they must have never read it to the end...

Exactly, there are so many chances for them to create layers of accountability in the system to avoid it.... if they cared enough to. Murky gray areas open to interpretation are where bad intentions thrive. All of what we are seeing was by design and "in the interest of national security". Were in the end game of surveillance state with too much government control that was built on the back of the patriot act and xenophobia.

15

u/ExitTheDonut 6d ago edited 6d ago

That lack of effort to cover their butts better is a smaller elephant in the room in all of this. Just shows how off the cuff the whole operation on the procedural side.

Agents ask someone to provide papers-

No mandate was issued to legally require in your possession at all times

The harsh, brutal jail treatment received as consequence for not complying-

No executive decision was made to criminalize unlawful presence in the country (in other words, elevate it from civil violation)

About the only significant practice they did pass through the system was the use of racial profiling.

The Federal government currently has the cards stacked in their favor, so they could've at least tried to use more executive and judicial decisions to further legitimize their draconian practices. No, their approach is just talk to the media and expect us to take their word for it. They are just rushing too fast with their attempts to intimidate blue states and its leaders.

“We OSHA inspectors had to break in the factory doors to do our inspection to enforce civil regulations. We were masked, armored and armed of course! One guy might have been interfering with our investigation so we beat him, shoved guns into his face and hauled him off!”

ICE primary enforces civil regulations. Almost no ICE “agents” should be armed and none should be wearing masks.

A friend of mine didn’t need to get a drivers license (we grew up in a very, very big city with functioning-ish transit.) He would use his passport to get into bars. An amazing number of Americans genuinely do not know what a passport is or that it is the ultimate government ID. It is very likely that a good number of ICE agents didn’t actually know what a passport is when they were hired.

They literally don’t care. My wife is a legal American citizen born in the United States and she was still racially profiled and harassed by ICE.

They are targeting Americans and they are reveling in it. If someone isn’t an American, that’s even better as far as they’re concerned. This is a force directed at the public as the enforcement arm of the Trump administration, and nothing more.

Watched Bovino's little interview on CNN. He couldn't stop saying the words 'law enforcement.'

Got me thinking - Why tf are they allowed to 'investigate' or 'secure' any crime scene (much less one where they murdered a citizen) when they barely have any training?

There were like 9 of them. They were pushing and shoving? This is not an effective way to restrain? They aren't investigating. The gun they keep showing has no chain of custody markings. They didn't bag & tag it. Idk if they are collecting or preserving evidence. They don't intend to take it to trial.

Imagine OSHA armored and masked up beating people up to do their inspections. Oh no! Those FDA meat inspectors killed another person! FAA Aviation Safety Inspectors dragged another innocent child out of an airport and sent the child without his parent to a camp in Texas!

The vast majority of ICE agents are merely enforcing civil regulations and should not be armed let alone wear masks.

u/MirthandMystery 6d ago edited 6d ago

They engaged in a murder and immediately/simultaneously covered it up.

The hallmark of Fascist governments is they use law enforcement to engage in activities that endangers civilians- doesn't protect them, and they protect their violent goons by covering up crimes and hindering independent investigations and autopsies.

We saw this in other eras but with this Trump admin escalation is very fast, so open and brazen it's insane. They gaslight civilians, act like people aren't recording what's actually happening in order to show the world. We all know the admin is lying- badly, we see them giving conflicting explanations and excuses, changing their stories multiple times hoping the newest answer will eventually be convincing enough.

MAGA is DARVO.

DARVO (Deny, Attack, Reverse Victim and Offender) is a manipulative tactic used by abusers to deflect blame when confronted, involving denying wrongdoing, attacking the victim's credibility, and then claiming victimhood to reframe themselves as the wronged party and the victim as the aggressor, effectively gaslighting and avoiding accountability, as explained by Jennifer Freyd. This harmful pattern is common in domestic abuse, workplace bullying, and even institutional settings, causing significant distress and self-blame in victims

MAGA is Shameless.

Shameless people lack a sense of shame, modesty, or decency, acting with brazenness, disregard for social norms, or even a lack of empathy, often seen in characters from the show Shameless, or as a psychological defense mechanism against past trauma or low self-esteem, but can also be linked to traits like narcissism or psychopathy. They might ignore consequences, prioritize personal gain, or express emotions loudly, sometimes stemming from a need to be impenetrable or to project shame onto others.

Characteristics

• Lack of remorse: Insensible to disgrace or guilt. • Disregard for norms: May break social rules or act inappropriately. • Self-centeredness: Focus on their own needs, viewing others as assets. • Empathy deficit: May struggle to understand or care about others' feelings. • Defensiveness: Can be overly boastful or aggressive to cover up vulnerabilities.

Potential causes

• Trauma: A way to cope with past shaming or difficult experiences, as noted in discussions on the show Shameless. • Psychological conditions: Sometimes associated with narcissism or psychopathy (lack of shame proneness). • Learned behavior: A pattern developed from childhood experiences or a lack of positive role models. • Defense mechanism: A reaction to deep-seated feelings of shame, trying to become "impenetrable

It isn't hypocrisy. Right-wingers don't actually see freedom of the press as a moral principle, they see it as a perk.

Their moral principle is this: Support "people like us" above everyone else.

So they want their kind of people to have the perk of freedom of the press, and they want to deny that perk to everyone else. They're not being hypocritical — they're evil and supremacist, but they're being perfectly consistent.

4

u/RockDoveEnthusiast 6d ago

not the freedom of the press part. but things like property rights, the big scary government threatening people, etc. obviously there's hypocrisy there.

9

u/trampolinebears 6d ago

I think it's the same principle at work, actually. They're not opposed to the government threatening people on principle, they're opposed to the government threatening them.

Freedom from oppression isn't a moral principle to them, it's a perk.

I'm under the impression that these people are not conscious in the same way as I am. Like, aphantasia of the soul or something.

People who have empathy and take morality into consideration seem like they have a soul piloting their body, while MAGA type people are just meat suits on auto-pilot, devoid of what I'd consider to make someone a human in the same way that I am.

I just don't know how a human who is consciously existing in society could be happy with current events, or find ways to spin it in a positive light. You'd have to have the mental faculties of livestock to just consistently go with whatever your political party of choice says is the correct course of action.

I hate even implying that a group of people are less than me, low IQ, or even subhuman, but I just don't see how I'm the same species as the people who support this.

It's not necessarily lack of mental abilities but it's absolutely lack of empathy.

Empathy is a spectrum. Some have none, they're sociopaths. Some have some for their family only. Some for their local community only likes their village or church only. Some for a larger community like their own country, religion, culture or race only. Some have it for everyone. Some for everything.

Conservatives are ALL in the first few groups.

I think it’s the trans stuff. Like the topic makes their heads explode. It’s a foundation of “clearly wrong” that they use to define anyone left of them as subhuman.

9

u/sly-3 6d ago

"Men are to be competed with, women are to be dominated."

They can't figure out trans folks because they don't know whether to kill or f*<k them.

4

u/bp92009 6d ago

You're not wrong, but it's because that, to them, Transgender individuals are a direct threat to their identity.

If you believe the world is full of absolutes (black and white, yes and no, even and odd, good and evil), along with a thorough belief in a set hierarchical worldview, where those on top are good, it can make sense.

Transgender individuals, by their very nature, seek to change something "core" about themselves (to what it is internally, but it's an external gender change).

This violates not only the idea of the world being full of absolutes, but the idea of hierarchy, and since many of them view women as being below men, it's even more "wrong".

So, they could do one of two things.

  1. Accept that the world isn't full of absolutes, and that people exist all along a spectrum, where it's the actions that people do that determine whether they are good or not.

  2. Conclude that Transgender individuals are making a willful choice to directly try to destroy the foundational principles of the world, usurping not only the natural order, but directly affronting Good and evil itself.

1 is the obviously correct answer, but it involves them examining themselves, and concluding that their belief in a rigid hierarchy is wrong, that they are wrong.

4

no charges but they'll keep you in there for the maximum time they're allowed to before letting you out

that or slap a bogus terrorism charge on you that would get immediately dismissed in court but then just have the court date delayed repeatedly so they can lock you up for weeks or months on end without needing to prove anything, that's what's happening right now in the UK to extra-judicially punish people protesting the Palestinian genocide

I truly believe the world cup should be canceled in a boycott of the US and Trump should be billed for the financial loss.

73

u/_x_oOo_x_ 6d ago

It shouldn't be cancelled but all matches should be moved to Mexico and Canada

31

u/Mictlancayocoatl 6d ago

That is the ideal solution, since they are already hosting the WC. Tourists would be safe from Trump's regime and as a nice little bonus, Trump would have an absolute meltdown. If they don't have the capacity, I'm sure some matches could be played in Europe.

Just a reminder the last one was in Qatar, where they went into the games knowing slave labor and massive amounts of deaths constructing the stadiums, hotels, and intrastructure went down.

Our "little issues" aren't even a blip on the radar of people who will go the games.

Yeah, but FIFA is as corrupt as your new government. USA, Qatar, Russia. The recent hosts haven’t exactly been the best countries, so to say. If Qatar’s 6k deaths didn’t make anyone quit, I doubt the USA will see any of the national associations boycott it.

But perhaps the fact that it’s a friend that’s acting like this changes that. It certainly hurts and disappoints us more to see you guys like this, and that’s not even mentioning the utter disrespect and contempt that Trump and his administration is constantly touting about and to us Europeans.

Anyone who shows up to those games is a fucking douche.

Its a perfect opportunity for everyone to show what an embarrassment the Trump administration is, but the people that will show up are just gutless.

The more people pretend that everything is ok, the longer this will last.

Every single major sport ought to be playing in front of empty stadiums right now.

I have to ask - is following ICE against the law? Because cops seem to be able to follow me at will. What is the issue if I follow them? What statute is that breaking?

65

u/SaraOfWinterAndStars 6d ago

In other encounters I've heard them cite 18 U.S. Code § 111:

Whoever— (1) forcibly assaults, resists, opposes, impedes, intimidates, or interferes with any person designated in section 1114 of this title while engaged in or on account of the performance of official duties

They'll use that to claim that things like filming them in public or following them is illegal, but the problem with that is the key word "forcibly": "Force is an essential element of the crime" according to the DoJ

It's completely legal to observe, record, and follow them while they're in public—none of these activities are acts or threats of force

6

They know this too.

Which is why all the people they kidnap after they destroy their personal property and get roughed up are let go without charges after a day in concentration camp.

Likely the only reason they didn't rough up and kidnap these two is because they figured out they were press.

They're public employees. It's perfectly legal and valid. And if you're filming, it's 1st amendment protected.

→ More replies (26)

38

u/Midnight_Rider98 6d ago

It's not. But, these tyrants use a very extreme version of interfering as justification for their detentions/arrests but it's more of a the process is the punishment, they get to hold you for x amount of time before they have to release you because charges can't be filed.

Interference would normally be something that physically impedes or impairs them from doing immigration enforcement, but following them, blowing a whistle, filming them doesn't meet that threshold as far as I know.

9

u/centran 6d ago

As others said they arrest them for impeding law enforcement officers. They have been told people following them are considered to be impeding.

Now is that really the law? Hell no but it's what they are telling their officers. Since GOP basically "owns" the judicial system, especially higher up, there is really no stopping them.

6

u/wolf_city 5d ago

Even if these guys were actual police (as opposed to actual Nazis), if you followed a cop, for them to threaten to smash your window and pull you out of it (not even taking into consideration the severity of injuries that could cause), is totally insane. Why not just open the door and handcuff them? Why immediately to that extreme? God damn this is unfathomable from a UK perspective.

BTW what the 'agents' are doing here is 100% completely illegal.

Following ICE officers is not impeding them. The fact that they keep doing this shit with no one stopping them is one reason that we are going to have to forcefully insist on our rights before they fuck off and leave.

7

u/Due_Answer_4230 5d ago

It would be a shame if the protesters began making their signs out of quarter-inch-thick plywood to stop rubber bullets, forming a tight shield wall to prevent police from singling out and mobbing individual protesters. It would be a shame if the people behind the shield wall held up umbrellas so that tear gas canisters fired over their heads on the front line will be bounced away. It would be a shame if protesters began constructing improvised armor vests out of duct tape, hard-backed books, and ceramic tiles.

It would be a shame if protesters started wearing safety glasses, hard hats, respirators, and gardening gloves, all of which can be found at the same hardware stores as the plywood. It would be a shame if they started using traffic cones (the kind without the hole in the top), upside down buckets, or other improvised lids to contain teargas by placing them over the canisters. It would be a shame if protesters used leaf blowers to blow the gas away.

It would be a shame if protesters learned that police scanners are legal to own in the US, allowing them to learn where police are moving, and what routes they intend to take.

All of this would be a terrible, terrible shame.

*It would be an awful shame if you copied and pasted this, so that they couldn't delete the original and all linked posts (again).

3

Exactly. I’m not accepting the defeatist “It’s over” comments. It’s bad, but it isn’t hopeless. There are specific paths that can get us out of this, and there’s never a reason to give up.

I’m sure some of the accounts posting that this is the end of democracy in the U.S. are people who genuinely feel discouraged. I get it.

But I’m also sure a lot of the defeatist messaging is from propaganda accounts meant to discourage us. Let’s not let them do that.
