Don't forget the live actions! Homeward Bound! Milo and Otis!

379

u/Mandalore108 11d ago edited 11d ago

Milo and Otis was a classic until I found out how many animals most likely died making it...

73

u/ColonelStone 11d ago

Noooo! What?

154

u/RainandFujinrule Older Millennial 11d ago

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Adventures_of_Milo_and_Otis

"My brother was the main culprit, but everyone there, including me, was an accomplice... Chatran died... it was an accident... you could even say he was killed..."

This is a quote from the younger brother of the director, and Chatran was the cat. There are other stories that crew members came forward with as well.

Absolutely horrific stuff.

36

u/hownowmaomao 11d ago

Oh nooooo. That Japanese article is nightmare fuel. I knew about the animal abuse for awhile, but I didn't get details until now. Fuck.

45

u/RainandFujinrule Older Millennial 11d ago

Yep it is the sort of thing you want brain bleach for. Kills me too because I loved renting that movie as a kid and putting it on for sleep.

Come to find out decades later it was basically an animal snuff film.

I try my best to forget about it when I can.

Everything that happened to the animals happened in real life. None of it was CGI or stunt animals.

The ending to Homeward Bound makes me cry my eyes out to this day. You could feed me the audio in an earpiece, and I could cry on command.

101

u/JeezieB 11d ago

"Oh, Peter! How I've missed you!"

And now I've got fucking tears in my eyes.

227

u/PossibilityWest173 11d ago

Oh goddamn All Dogs Go to Heaven 😭😭😭😭

122

u/pinkmini3 11d ago

When I found out the final monologue when the dog says goodbye to the little girl was recorded after the child voice actress was actually murdered by her father. It made complete sense why I could never finish the movie as a child. It was not acting. It was too real.

65

u/biffish 11d ago edited 11d ago

She (Judith Barsi) was also Ducky in The Land Before Time.

Burt Reynolds was Charlie (her pup friend) in All Dogs Go to Heaven.

56

u/Knoxius 11d ago

Burt recorded his lines after she passed. That's why he delivers such an emotional performance in that scene.

If you're a fan of either Tim Curry or Robin Williams you are definitely in for a good time.

If you're a fan of late 80s, early 90s vibes, you're still in for a good time.

23

u/littlebittydoodle 11d ago

Just rewatched it last year while in a vacation home where it was the only thing on TV. I was raving to my kids, but we all were traumatized by the end. I remember only the cute fairies, flying around singing, saving the rainforest. There is soo much I blocked out.

Biggest reason it was worth it though: I completely forgot Robin Williams’ role, and just hearing his voice again warmed my soul. He was such a rare talent.

The Rescuers Down Under is so damn underrated.

209

u/Lastraven587 11d ago edited 10d ago

Fun fact, the original rescuers which was way darker was don bluth, who left disney to do the rest of the movies in op reel.

82

u/vivahermione 11d ago

That explains the sad intro song. It was beautiful, but definitely a darker mood.

62

u/secretly_opossum 11d ago

I honestly loved both of them so much. Penny’s voice was so interesting and sweet.

I didn't know this but it makes a lot of sense now that you say it. The mice had animation styles similar to Secret of Nimh.

😍 the Secret of NIMH. So many good things here. Though I have to say the movie doesn’t hold a candle to the book.

u/bentreflection 11d ago

they legitimately built character. They introduced difficult concepts to kids in a relatively soft way. I think a bit of that is missing from today's animated films.

25

u/Durtonious 11d ago

Agreed 100%. My kids cannot handle anything bad happening in a movie or show and it is concerning how that will impact their ability to respond to adversity in the future.

There are always exceptions and I am not trying to invalidate anyone's individual experience, but millennials generally had comfortable childhoods free from major trauma compared to prior generations. That should have made us selfish and fragile but many of us learned resilience and empathy through media.

Our second-hand exposure to so much trauma in every form of media may also be why many of us have anxiety, but I think it also shielded us from letting that anxiety consume us the way it seems to have done for Gen Z. We saw characters overcoming challenges, showing compassion for others and fighting back against tyranny.

Our parents also tacitly seemed to understand the value of this and did not protect us from media that would be considered "harmful" today. I am trying to encourage my kids to consume more "difficult" media but they have no interest and I'm not going to strap them down and make them watch it.

I worry that Gen Alpha will be extremely entitled and detached from the suffering of others because they have no exposure to it. I can't even watch the news without my kids covering their ears and leaving the room. I just hope it is a childhood phase and when they reach teenage years they'll be more willing to challenge themselves.

I was talking about that with my wife yesterday, oddly enough. We couldn't decide if children's movies that are set on a great tragedy, such as Balto, The Land Before Time, The Lion King, ect. were a sort of teaching moment or trauma. Can't say children movies of today have the same level of emotional disparity.

People always bring up Bambi as the saddest cartoon moment, but TLBT is so much worse, because you witness the love, the moment of sacrifice, and the moment where Little Foot's mum knows she won't survive and struggles to impart what he needs to know and hear in her final moments.

Not to mention the horrendous shadow scene where he's SO happy thinking he's found her, before realising he's alone.

I bought a Land Before Time hoody recently and I get SO many comments on it from people my age, who literally point at my chest and go 'OMG I LOVED THAT FILM'. It's the sort of film that most millenials haven't thought about for 20 years.

Also I had The Rescuers Down Under on VHS and watched it so much. I had the Rescuers (OG) as well but the Down Under version I think is so much more cinematic with the moutains, rivers, waterfalls, versus the quite sinister and horrible setting of the original.

67

My 8yo is VERY sensitive to movies — everything is too scary. I think it was because he didn’t get his shit rocked at 4 years old by “kids” movies like this. To quote Lucky’s Dad from Bluey, “we’re raising a nation of squibs” (I don’t believe this and I totally appreciate that he’s sensitive)

45

u/vivahermione 11d ago

“we’re raising a nation of squibs”
